Electronics Products Safety

Electrical Safety
All electrical equipment must be safe to use,
providing the necessary protection for professional
users, private persons and property alike. SP is an
accredited laboratory for testing of electrical safety in a
wide range of product areas: we can provide CB
certification for access to a number of markets outside
Europe as well as MET-certification for USA/Canada.
We have expert competence within electrical safety for
electric/hybrid vehicles where we participate in R&D
projects, carry out investigations and provide training
and advisory services. We also carry out failure
investigations and quick turnround, limited scope examinations in the field of electrical safety.

Explosion protection
Both electrical and non electrical equipment in explosive environment must be designed
with special protection. SP performs risk assessment, design reviews and type approval
according to ATEX- and IECEx-requirements. SP is a Notified Body for the ATEX-directive as well
as a Certification Body according to IECEx. We have expert competence in the field of safety of
new fuels where we participate in R&D projects, carry out investigations and provide training as
well as advisory services.

Product evaluation
The evaluation must provide a range of services in ESD protection, such as testing and
approval to international standards, as well as training, assessment inspections and advisory
services. Also inspect and examine a number of products that have special requirements, such
as taximeters in accordance with the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). Evaluate safety
and performance characteristics of battery systems for example in electric and hybrid vehicles
as well as various performance characteristics of motors and generators.

Electronic Product Safety Examples

Testing Alarm System

Fire alarms
Fire alarm systems installed in buildings shall comply with the Construction Products
Directive, CPD (89/106/EEC) which is a legal requirement in the EU. RISE (before SP) can help to
test control panels, power supplies and alarm transmitters according to the harmonic standard
in the EN 54 series, and issue certificates for this. Also have the opportunity to test fire alarm
panels (BFT) in accordance with SS 3654 and make test reports that are valid at the Swedish
Fire and Security Certification (SBSC).

Intrusion alarms
Intrusion alarms are not regulated in the CPD, but there are a number of European
standards in the EN 50131 series used as standards in procurement, etc. SP offers you an
accredited test according to ISO / IEC 17025 and certificates according to EN 45011. Needed are
specialists in control panels, power supplies, alarm transmitters, bypass switch and sirens. Also
offer testing according to SSF standards as SSF1014, which can be used as a basis for a SBSC
certificate. A SBSC certificate can be of great assistance in procurements, etc.

New Fuels
New fuels as e.g. E85 and different gases do not have the same fire and explosion
properties as gasoline. Since most components and safety systems on vehicles are designed
either for gasoline or diesel it is important to know that the properties of these new fuels do
not affect the overall safety. Two of the most important factors are the fuel vapour composition
and the flammability properties. A fuel tank containing gasoline at room temperature has a too
rich fuel mixture, i.e. the air/fuel mixture in the tank has an excess of fuel vapours.
In the corresponding way, the fuel vapours a tank with diesel contains too little fuel and
is designated as lean. In both cases it means that a fire in for instance the filling neck cannot
propagate into the fuel tank. Other liquids, for instance pure ethanol creates flammable fuel
vapours at a room temperature and a fire outside the tank can therefore propagate into the
tank.
Since vehicle fuels often is a mixture of different products to fulfil existing fuel
specifications it is important to evaluate the actual properties of such mixture. We have the
resources and the competence to evaluate new fuels, i.e. to determine the flammability range
and the composition of the fuel vapours in a tank at various temperatures. Specific knowledge
about the fire and explosion properties of different fuel alternatives enables you to discover
any risks and take appropriate measures to avoid an accident. The largest risk for ignition of the
fuel vapours in the tank is during filling. There are several possibilities to reduce such a risk by
the design of the tank and the refuelling pipe and we can help you with such an evaluation.
Hybrid Vehicles
New technology presents new challenges and new technical risks. High electrical
voltages have to be safely controlled, both for service work and in traffic accidents. Electric
motors must not cause high levels of interference. Battery systems must be capable of storing
sufficient energy for adequate operating ranges.
Explosion Protection
Electrical and mechanical equipment and components intended to be used in
potentially explosive environments within the EU must fulfill the requirements of the ATEX
Directive. The IECEx Scheme is a voluntary certification system that facilitates global trade of
explosion-protected electrical equipment.
