OBSERVATIONS
1. The chromatogram paper

1.1 How did the appearance of the chromatogram

paper change during the progress of the
chromatographic procedure?
As the solvent slowly travels up the paper,
the chromatogram paper was spotted with
different pigments that the ink contains

1.2 Describe briefly how this chromatogram would

have been produced.
The mixture of pigments from the pen were
separated by using two types of substance:
mobile phase (solvent) and stationary phase
(chromatogram paper)

2. Based from the chromatogram classify the samples.

Color of pigment/s Classification of sample (pure
Sample
observed substance/ mixture)
1 Pink Pure Substance
2 Blue/Violet Mixture
3 Green Pure Substance

Post-Laboratory Questions:

1. How will you use this procedure to identify an unknown type of colored pigment?
- An unknown type of colored pigment can be identified by using a (mobile phase) solvent that is
capable of transporting the solution being tested.
2. Why pencil is used in drawing the start line and stop line and not an ink pen?
- Graphite from the pencil lead doesnt dissolve in organic solvents unlike the inks from pens.
