ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS and representation of GeMin Expo in
Zakynthos Island , Ionian Sea , Hellas
The 1rst Show on Minerals, Fossils and gemstones was held in Zakynthos Island from 18 to 25 August 2012 based on
the collaboration among the Mineralogical Magazine ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA- NEWS ON MINERALS, the GeMin Expo ,
the Company "Creations-Designs" located in the Commercial Center "TERPSITHEA" downtown Piraeus
(www.gemin.eu ) and the unique Traditional Tourist Complex Archontiko Village in Katastari , owned and
operated by the family of Stefanos Voutos (http://archontikovillage.com/), We had supported in the past and
continue to support the view that there has to be every Summer a Mineral , Gemstone and Fossil show both in the
mainland and in the Greek islands - especially in the summertime where there is increased tourist traffic . Such an
activity , apart from its scientific nature contributes in the local development without polluting the environment.
Because all judged from the result we decided to proceed to the first Mineral ,Gemstone and Fossil Show in
Zakynthos Island. Media sponsor of this exhibition was the newspaper and radio HERMES
(http://www.ermisnews.gr/ermis/ ) of Zakynthos and we wish to thank Mr. Philippos Synetos , director and
journalist Ms. Angela Xenophou , which hosted in her informative morning broadcast in HERMES Radio on
08/20/2012 Mr. Stephanos Voutos and the Editor of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA - NEWS ON MINERALS Mr. Dimitris
Minatidis and discussed on the issues covered by the Mineral,Gem and Fossil show. We also thank Ms Ghiota
Karadima , Manager of the company Smartart design (http://www.smartartdesign.gr/) for the artistic custody of the
poster of the exhibition in Zakynthos Island. We also thank Mary Voutos , her son Dimitris and Helen Arvanitaki for
taking care of the whole historical team of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS and for access in computer
facilities. Finally a big thanks to all visitors in the first mineral , gemstone and fossil exhibition in Zakynthos , as all
the visitors are our oxygen to keep going this effort.
- Among the various exhibits included in the GeMin Zakynthos were minerals , crystals and facetted gemstones
from various regions of the Earth and from Greece , such as top beryl crystals (aquamarine) from Karakoram Mts in
Himalaya , quartz crystals with inclusions of tourmaline from Brazil , rose quartz from Madagascar , smoky quartz
from Pakistan , Lazourite (known as Lapis) from Afghanistan , Zeolites from Poona-India , fantastic samples of blue
azurite and malachite, blue-green aragonite from Lavrion ,Hellas Celestite from Madagascar , sardonyx agates from
Brazil , fossil collections, samples of spinel crystals in the rock matrix from Vietnam , obsidian from Mexico ,
amethyst from Brazil , fossilized ammonites from Madagascar , emeralds from Brazil , ametrine from Bolivia ,
rubellites (red tourmaline) from Madagascar , gorgeous handmade jewelry with precious and semiprecious stones in
sterling silver 925o, systematic mineralogy minerals in plastic boxes properly labelled with name and origin of each
mineral and other handmade artcrafts.
We noticed a kind a mixed sentiments of joy and surprise among the visitors and the local people proposed to us to
repeat the Mineral, Gemstone and Fossil show in 2013 and be longer than 8 days , i.e. 15 days (!).This proposal is
the best acknowledgment for our efforts to initiate such a show in Zakynthos Island. Visitors from Ireland , Italy ,
Wales and France felt a pleasant surprise by coming across a Mineral , Gemstone and Fossil Show in Archontiko
Village in Katastari where they found excellent quality gem amethyst facetted stones in prices much lower than the
prices of same gemstones in Brazil (!!) which had visited recently. The seed has been planted and it remains to grow
up and give fruits . All it needs is care , patience , persistence , cooperation and support by the Local Society and
Authorities of Zakynthos Island. Zakynthos Island is a pioneer and emulated that such shows should be established
each summer and embraced by other also Greek Islands, as many of these Islands - apart from the beautiful and
calm natural environment have an appropriate infrastructure such as Airports where , apart from OLYMPIC
AIRLINES and AEGEAN , they accept international charter flights directly from European Countries and overseas ,
modern hotels with suitable halls for exhibitions and especially a lot of people who "are thirsty" for something new
that will provide joy, knowledge, familiarity with the topics covered by GeMin and give them an outlet for business,
without neglecting the fact that the subject of minerals, fossils and precious / semi-precious stones, even in a
simple form, it requires specialized knowledge. We think that in many cases the obstacle to development is a kind of
introversion and refusal to accept something new as it is said - "is locked in his shell". Change in cast of mind is
wanted and of course persistence, patience and hard work. Development without the assent of Local Society is non
realistic

- Items on display were set up in thematical groups : Obsidian and Kallaite (on the left) , Sardonyx Agate , Lazourite (Lapis) ,
aquamarina hand made jewellery and on the right rose quartz. All displays included the rough specimens, cut stones and
jewellery in sterling silver 925.

As every summer (why ?) this summer also there were many fires in Zakynthos Island . While most people
enjoyed the Mineral and Gem show and had a dip in the lovely waters of the Ionian Sea , the heroic
pilots of the Hellenic firefighting planes were trying in cooperation with ground fire department forces
- from sunrise to the sunset - to control the fire and finally to quench off the fire.Olive trees are seen in
the background.

Apart from the production of very refractory porcelain , gem disthene or kyanite is used for fine gemstone jewellery. The name of
the mineral derives from the Hellenic words ( di-sthene) as the mineral shows two hardness in Mohs scale , one
hardness is 5 along the crystals and the second hardness is 7 across the crystals. Also the name kyanite derives from the
Hellenic word , a greek word used for the blue color. Well formed disthene or kyanite crystals are most sought for by
mineral collectors and Mineralogical Museums. It is characteristic that the original kyanite crystals must be sizeable and health in
order to yield fine cut gemstones , something which is quite rare.

with a variety of zeolite minerals. Cavansite is a relatively rare mineral. It is polymorphic with the even rarer
mineral, pentagonite. It is most frequently found in Poona, India and in the Deccan Traps, a large igneous province.
