Level of Self-Esteem of Velez College Students

Self-esteem is the overall evaluation of ones worth or value. In our research it is the

positive or negative attitude of Velez College students towards themselves. Table __ shows

that Velez College students are at moderate self-esteem, with a weighted mean of 2.98. This

suggests that the students have good opinion of their selvies; (Mayo Clinic, Self-esteem

check: Too low, too high, or just right?, 2014) they can accept and value themselves while

also recognizing their flaws (UT Counseling and Mental Health Center, University of Texas,

nd). According to Perez, Vohs and Joiner an individual should endorse self-esteem scale

items at least moderately to be considered to have positive self-esteem (Discrepancies

between Self- Esteem and Other Esteem as Correlates of Aggression, 2005). This means that

self-esteem is positive even though they possess neither high nor low self-esteem.

Pearson Correlation Psychological Needs and Self-Esteem

Table __ shows the correlation analysis between Psychological Needs and self-esteem

level of Velez College students. The table illustrates a pearson correlation which was used to

determine if the Psychological needs; autonomy, competence and relatedness relates to the

self-esteem of the students. The result shows that the correlation for autonomy to self-esteem

has an r-value of 0.519, competence to self-esteem has an r-value of 0.526 and the correlation

for relatedness to self-esteem has an r-value of 0.411. This suggests that there is a direct

relationship between each of the psychological needs to self-esteem. It means that the higher

satisfaction of the psychological needs would correspond to a higher level of self esteem.

This supports the study of Durmus and Ummet in 2014 when they proposed that the

satisfaction of the psychological needs positively predicted the individuals self-esteem. It

means that the satisfaction of these needs positively affects the state of well-being included

positive self-perception. It also proved, as seen with the r-values above that relatedness and

autonomy are the most basic needs an individual satisfies first.
