NLGI Classification
The National Lubricating Grease Institute has created a classification for the consistencies of lubricating
greases that was adopted as DIN 51 818 norm.

Consistency is defined as the resistance of a grease to deformation (similar to the viscosity of lubricating oils).
The deformation properties are dependent on the type and amount of thickener, the viscosity-temperature
characteristics of the base oil stock and the duration of work penetration. Depending on their worked penet-
ration lubricating greases is divided into nine NLGI consistency classes.

Consistency Classi- Worked Physical Type of Grease/Use

fication according Penetration to Characteristics
*)

000 445-475 liquid Viscous transmission grease and for use

0 355-385 semi-liquid
1 310-340 very soft Transmission lubrication, central lubrica-
tion systems
2 265-295 soft Multi-purpose greases for friction and
anti-friction bearings
3 220-250 malleable For fast rotating anti-friction bearings,
4 175-205 almost hard top-coat grease for launching ships
5 130-160 hard Conventional water pump greases
6 85-115 very hard and Contrary to above classes; non-worked
harder penetration: block greases

DIN 51 804 T1/01.72 was replaced by DIN ISO 2137

Labeling of greases according to DIN 51502

DIN 51502 regulates the uniform and unambiguous labeling of lubricants and lubricating
points. It is designed to prevent damage from confusing lubricants. It also refers to other DIN
standards, which describe and specify lubricants and their test methods in detail.

The labeling regulations for lubricating greases according to DIN 51502 define location of
use, base oil stock, additives, upper service temperature limits and reaction with water.
