2. Spread2. Spreader-Bar SWL 5 Ton (Used Design), ASME BTH-1-2005
3. Design 3. Design Category B
- Design Category B should be designated when the magnitude and variation of loads applied to the
lifter are not predictable, where the loading and environmental conditions are severe, or not accurately
defined.
- Nd = 3.00 for Design Category B lifters (Design factors for Design Category B lifting devices shall be not
less than 3.00 for limit states of yielding or buckling and 3.60 for limit states of fracture and for
connection design.)
- The ultimate shear strength of steel is often given in textbooks as 67% to 75% of the ultimate tensile
strength. Tests have shown values commonly in the range of 80% to 95% for mild steels (Lyse and
Godfrey, 1933; Tolbert, 1970) and about 70% for T-1 steel (Bibber, et al, 1952). The ultimate shear
strength is taken as 70% of the ultimate tensile strength in Eq. (3-49).
