BUILDING GREEN FOR A

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Eng. Shiromal Fernando - Chartered Engineer

WHY BUILD GREEN?
Population? Source: US Census Bureau

World Population
Year (billions)
2010 6.8
2020 7.6
2030 8.3
2040 8.9
2050 9.4
Development and Water Consumption

Global
1900-2000: consumption rate doubled that of
population
2025: 2/3 population in water stressed
conditions
Climate change and sustainable
economic development is the
greatest challenges that we need
to address today!
The Main Issue?
Distribution of the CO2 Emissions
World Nations

Year 2004
Increasing greenhouse gases trap more
Greenhouse effect
heat

Why should we care?

Global Issues

Green Building : Why?
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?

Built environments lifespan contribution to global CO2

emissions is 40 per cent - the largest single contributor
to global warming (UNEP)
One tone of Cement produce will contribute to one tone
of CO2 emissions
Building sector is responsible for more than one third
of total energy use
Building sector is responsible for 12% of the water
usage
Building sector is responsible for 40% of the waste that
goes to Land Fills
Can we change the
situation?
What shall we do?
Our designs shall be futuristic, there
life time shall be 100 years or more
Strength, Stability and Serviceability
shall not be the only criteria a building
shall be designed but sustainability
shall main criteria
Design Buildings to use low energy
Use natural light and ventilation which
we are blessed with 12/7
What shall we do?
Use Renewable energy sources
to energize your building
Do not Build on green fields but
build on Brown Fields
Reduce use of potable water
Use Building material efficiently.
Only use good material where
necessary.
What shall we do?
Use building materials that can be reuse
steel and timber
Reuse Building Materials as much as
possible
Design key elements with more emphasis
on durability
Build Rail Roads instead of Vehicular
Roads
Corrosion of
reinforcement
