DENVER As the Southeast
prepared for treacherous win-
ter weather, skiers in the West
flocked to resorts Thursday to
take advantage of deep, fresh
snow.
At Deer Valley in Utah, Emily
Summers said her boss kicked
her and her co-workers out of
the office and told them to hit
the slopes and take advantage of
a winter that only comes once a
decade.
This is the snow we dream
of, said Summers, a spokes-
woman for the resort.
The storms pounded parts of
California, Utah, Colorado and
other states as they made their
way east, creating difficult driv-
ing conditions and closing roads.
Small avalanches and white-outs
were reported in some areas.
More than 6 feet of snow had
fallen in the upper elevations of
the Sierra Nevada since Sunday.
In Idaho, snow accumulating for
several weeks reached 15 inches
in Boise.
Uber driver Jesse Lowman said
the record snowfall has been
good for business in the city.
Weve got a lot of people
stuck, calling in to get rides all
the time. Its pretty fun, he said.
Most of the side streets in
the city havent been plowed
because the highway district is
focusing on keeping main roads
and feeder streets open. Some
neighborhoods were tough for
Lowmans pickup to traverse.
In Sandy, Utah, A.J. Simmons
took advantage of his day off to
go sledding with his 2-year-old
son for the first time.
His son, Everett, mostly cried
as his father pulled his sled
slowly down a small hill at a park
in frigid temperatures. After one
run, Simmons put his son in the
warm car with his wife and took
a few trips down the hill himself.
The turbulent weather was
expected to spread a wintry mix
of rain, sleet and snow across
large swaths of Alabama, the
Carolinas and Georgia, with 2
inches of snow forecast for At-
lanta.
Ski resorts in the West used
their social media accounts to
spread the news of the snow and
to lure skiers who have been anx-
iously waiting to hit the slopes.
But some encountered prob-
lems, and the storm proved to
be deadly.
A skier was rescued Wednes-
day after dangling from a Colo-
rado chairlift after his backpack
got caught. Luckily, a profes-
sional slackliner a type of
tightrope walker known for ac-
robatic tricks climbed the lift
tower and slid across the cable to
reach him.

He dresses for work in a na-
vy-blue uniform and makes sure
the brass is polished and the boots
are shined. He straps on a heavy-
duty leather belt that holds a side-
arm, Taser, radio and handcuffs.
He is Sgt. Tony Heredia of the
Carlisle Police Department. Some
days the job holds more chal-
lenges and stress than a citizen
might believe.
How does he unwind, decom-
press? He trades his patrol car for
a kayak. His tools become a rod,
reel and spinners. Then he enters
the Susquehanna River at Har-
risburg looking for the biggest
small mouth bass that will strike
the lure.

charismatic lynx have been pa-
rading past awe-struck Colorado
residents and visitors this winter,
electrifying social media and giv-
ing biologists reason to smile.
One of the rare, fluffy-looking
cats strolled nonchalantly across
the Purgatory resort in south-
western Colorado last week,

today inside the 24-acre complex
named after the countrys largest
indoor agricultural exposition.
Yet visitors inside the state
Farm Show Complex here will
find outdoor exhibits ranging
from lawn care equipment to
outdoor furnaces. Most of the

Heredia went fishing for the
first time 21 years ago. His god-
father took him out, looking for
catfish and using chicken livers
and necks for bait. He was hooked.
We caught them for the fight,
for the sport of it, always releasing

But he wanted more, and kayak
fishing might be the answer.
I didnt have a great deal of
confidence when I started, He-
redia said. I took a three-day
course. I read. I watched docu-
mentaries. I put a lot of time in

After five years, hes as adept at
kayak fishing as he is as a law en-
forcement officer. He prefers the
Susquehanna River.
Heredia calls the Susquehanna
River one of the most prolific
small bass fisheries in the United
States. The substrata is very un-

The first year he went out no
swerved around the animal and
stopped to take videos.
Two weeks earlier, a pair of
lynx loped along a mountain
highway a few feet from Dontje
Hildebrands car.
My heart just about busted
out of my chest when I realized
what I was seeing, said Hildeb-
rand, who was driving over Molas
Pass, about 15 miles north of the
Purgatory resort, when he came
upon a female lynx and her kit-
ten.
Between 50 and 250 lynx live
in the wild in Colorado, mostly

Being at the Farm Show is
good for our business, said Linda
Collins, office manager of Shet-
ron Trailer Sales and Service of
Shippensburg. We do some sales
at the Farm Show and get a lot of
sales leads here.
Shetron, which manufactures
horse, cargo and livestock trailers
in Penn Township and sells them
in South Newton Township, has
been exhibiting at the Farm Show
for the past seven years. Located
at the back of the Weis Expo Hall,
the Shetron exhibit features var-
ious goose neck trailers, bumper
pull trailers and deck over flatbed
trailers.
more than 10 times. He bought a
real fishing kayak the next year
and went out 40 times. His third
year he was on the water 70 times
and started winter fishing. This
year he stopped counting the
number of times he went and
started tallying his total catch.
In June, he set a personal goal of
catching 1,000 fish. To date his
total is 994.
Heredia said the beauty of
the kayak is that its a mobile
fishing platform. It provides an
opportunity to fish waters that
arent pressured by motor boat
traffic. Kayakers hunt their fish
as opposed to dropping a line and
waiting for a bite.

current, Heredia said. Youre
looking for slack water on the
backside of islands, grassy
patches, submerged wood and
eddies behind rapids.
He said when the water is high
and muddy, the big fish tuck back

a hands-on experience when
theyre looking for trailers.

Carlisle, is showing nine horse
and livestock trailers at the Farm
Show this year.
January usually is a slow time
of the year for us, said Greg Bar-
rick, Best Choice owner. So the
Farm Show fits into our schedule.

where Heredia casts his small
plastic swim bait, which he de-
scribes as a fake shiner with
a little paddle tail. With it he
caught small mouth bass rang-
ing in size from 19-to-22 inches.
Hes had a few surprises, reeling
in a flathead catfish and a 35-inch
muskie. He calls his approach
stealth.
Anytime you have an oppor-
tunity to make a cast where the
fish arent spooked you have a
much greater chance of success,
Heredia said. Skittish fish are
definitely tougher to catch.
Heredia fishes the Susque-
hanna from West Fairview to
Marysville and along stretches in
Lancaster County south of Har-
risburg. Ironically, his best day
fishing was in the Juniata River
where he caught 54 small mouth
in a six-hour period.

sity of Wisconsin-Plat-
teville. He did the work
and passed the course. We
continue to work toward
his educational goals.
My goal in mentoring
is to help a young person
reintegrate into society.
I have found this way of
giving back to be very
rewarding. We have es-
tablished trust and open
lines of communication
and have shared many of
our life stories. I am very
proud of the man he has
grown into over the few
years I have known him.
His release date is this
month, and he will pursue
his college education upon
his release. I would appeal

about possibly committing
to mentoring a young per-
son who is incarcerated.

the mentoring and help

Dear Annie: My soon-
to-be mother-in-law and I
are in an all-out war via social
media. It all started when she
posted an article about politics
that was full of blatant lies and
misinformation.
I commented
with a few links
so she could do
further research
and see that
she was totally
wrong. She re-
plied by saying
ANNIES that I am young

my sources were
biased. I doubt
she even actually read them.
We went back and forth all
day, and eventually I told her
that she is an idiot if she truly putting on your fiancee. If you

She told me to talk to her again
when I am ready to grow up.
This was about two weeks ago.
My fiancee, Becky, is not
happy with me, to put it mildly.
While she doesnt agree with
that her mom was the first one
to be disrespectful, by telling
me Im naive. Becky wants me
to call her mom and apologize,
but Im still so annoyed with
this woman. On principle, I
refuse to do it. I wasnt wrong,
and Im not backing down. I
know you have to choose your
battles, but I think this one is

one for name-calling, but I
will say that if theres an idiot
in this scenario, your future
mother-in-law isnt it. Youre
not winning any battles, just
losing the respect of your

They are protected under
the Endangered Species Act
in the contiguous 48 states.
Lynx, native to Colorado,
virtually disappeared from
the state by the 1970s be-
cause of hunting, poisoning
and development. The state
brought them back starting
in 1999, transplanting lynx
from Canada and Alaska.
The medium-size cats
have tufted ears, short tails
and broad paws that work
like snowshoes, letting
them walk across powdery
snow. They can grow to
nearly 3 feet long and 30
pounds.
Wildlife officials dont
know exactly how many
live in Colorado because
they are so hard to find, said
Joe Lewandowski, a spokes-

ing them every year, but
those sightings dont help
with the science of lynx re-
introduction because they
are anecdotal, Lewandowski

But its encouraging, he

he and dozens of others
watched the lynx mosey
across a ski run.
For being a wild animal,
it was pretty surprising to
see him so relaxed around
people, Russell said.
He and others took cell-
phone video and posted it
on social media, gaining
broad attention.
At first it kind of looked
like a feral cat, Russell
said.
But then he remembered
seeing Hildebrands photos
of the Molas Pass lynx on
the front page of the Du-
rango Herald , and pretty
quick I was able to identify
it.
Lynx generally are not a
threat to people, Lewand-
owski said.
They are docile, they eat
mostly snowshoe hares and
they likely would not take
on anything as large as a
human. But they also are
unpredictable, and peo-
ple should never approach
them or feed them, he said.
