opens on
Fathers Day

Today, were looking for lunk-

Bass season is under way in
Pennsylvania.
Bass busting is so popular be-
cause of the fight at the end of the
line, the versatility of effective
lures and baits,
and an abundance
of opportunities.
The Com-
monwealth has
so many fantastic
spots for anglers
B.J. to catch small-
SMALL mouth and large-
mouth bass, from
creeks and rivers
to large ponds and lakes, Penn-
sylvania Fish and Boat Commis-
sion Executive Director John Ar-
way said. State parks are great
family-friendly places to fish,
particularly if you have young
kids.
And this year the start of
bass season falls on Fathers Day
weekend. I cant think of a better
way for grandfathers and fathers
to spend their weekend than
outside fishing with their sons,
daughters and grandkids.
In most waters during bass
season, anglers can keep a daily
limit of six bass of 12 inches in
length.
Anglers should keep in mind
that there are catch and imme-
diate release no harvest regu-
lations in place for smallmouth
and largemouth bass on the
lower sections of the Susque-
hanna River (below Sunbury) and
Juniata River (below Port Royal)
and into the rivers tributaries
to points one-half river-mile
upstream from the confluence.
Before you go out, dont forget
your license, personal flotation
device, and sunscreen.
Hunting licenses on sale
Monday
Pennsylvania hunting licenses
for 2017-18 go on sale Monday
and become valid after July 1.
July 10 is the first day antlerless
deer license applications will be
accepted from Commonwealth
residents.
Instead of the traditional di-
gest of hunting regulations,
license buyers will receive a
complimentary pocket-guide
that contains general hunting
regulations, hunting hours, flu-
orescent orange requirements, a
map of the Wildlife Management
Units and season dates and bag
limits. The Pennsylvania Game
Commission made this change in
order to save money.
License buyers can view the
full digest free online at the
www.pgc.pa.gov, or can opt to
purchase a printed digest for $6.
Digests will be sold over-the-
counter at Game Commission
regional offices and Harrisburg
headquarters.
New this year, pheasant per-
mits are required for all adult and
senior hunters, including senior
lifetime license buyers. Junior
hunters do not need a pheasant
permit to hunt or harvest pheas-
ants. Each pheasant permit costs
$26.90 and is required in addi-
tion to a general hunting license.
Steps have been taken to cur-
tail the cost of the pheasant pro-
gram. The commission last year
closed two of its four pheasant
farms, and the statewide pheas-
ant allocation for 2017-18 has
been reduced to 170,000.
The pheasant permit will help
fund the pheasant program
giving hunters a chance to help
sustain the program rather than
see it vanish.
General hunting licenses and
furtaker licenses each continue
to cost $20.90 for Pennsylvania
residents and $101.90 for non-
residents.

The Carlisle Garden Club has
chosen John and Susan Rogers
garden as its June Garden of the
Month.
Its a smaller garden than what
John and his wife had tended for
decades. John Rogers said he and
Susan had lived in North Moun-
tain for 33 years with a large
garden before moving to 140 S.
Pitt St., in Carlisle, where their
garden is now a little less than
900-square-feet.
When we moved to Pitt
Street, we essentially removed
the garden that was herees-
pecially the gazeboand created
one more to our own liking, John
said in a write-up. We made a
garden that is small, even cozy,
filled with some of the plants we
love, with wooden fencing on
two sides and a tumble down,
ivy-covered fence on the other.

conquers Everest, twice

Their bodies and
brains ravaged by the ox-
ygen-scarce heights of
the Himalayas, even the
hardiest few who scale
the treacherous slopes of
Mount Everest cut short
celebrations for some
well-deserved rest.
Not Kilian Jornet.
Somehow, he still had
some legs left.
My plan was to go up
one time, Jornet told
The Associated Press in a
recent interview in Bar-
celona, a couple of hours
south of his native Pyre-
nees. When I was going
down, I was like, Hmm,
we could have some days
before we leave . I wanted
to try to go back up again.
So the man who has
helped nurture high-alti-
tude running from obscu-
rity into the forefront of ex-
treme mountain sports set
out for a second solo ascent
in a six-day span of the tall-
est peak in the world.
Not that Jornet had any-
thing left to prove. Despite
being slowed by a stom-
ach bug that caused him
to vomit and cramp while
climbing, Jornet made his
first ascent up Everests
north face from the base
camp near the Rongbuk
monastery at 5,100 me-
ters in Tibet, crowning
the 8,848-meter summit
around midnight of May
21 in 26 hours after one
continued push. That was
the fastest known time for
the route without the use
of supplemental oxygen,
according to the Interna-
tional Skyrunning Fed-
eration, which governs
high-altitude racing.
By May 27, Jornet had re-
covered quickly enough to
make a second ascent from
an advanced base camp, at

6,400 meters. He passed
by three camp sites where
climbers usually need to
rest and reached the sum-
mit in 17 hours, just 15
minutes slower than the
record set by Hans Kam-
merlander in 1996.
That climb usually takes

ing Kammerlanders mark
because his conquering of
Everest was the culmina-
tion of a personal mission
to tame the worlds most
intimidating peaks.
For me the times is an
excuse, always, Jornet
said. It was interesting to
see if it is possible to go up
and down, to climb moun-
tains in the Himalayas
(like) we climb in the Alps
or the Rockies or in home
ranges because it (does)
not need a big infrastruc-
ture, big logistics. You just
need your backpack, and if
it is good weather you can
climb and some days after
you can do it again.
Maybe if you are
as superhuman, or as
souped-up human, as Kil-
ian Jornet.
The 29-year-old Span-
iard ascended Everest
without the help of other
climbers, fixed ropes, or
supplemental oxygen to
counter the brain-with-
ering effects of the death
zone above 8,000 meters.
Only about 200 climb-
ers have ever made it up
Everest without the use
of supplemental oxygen
since Reinhold Messner
and Peter Habeler did it for
the first time in 1978. Be-
fore those pioneers proved
otherwise, it was thought
to be a guaranteed death.
Only about 20 have ever
done it twice, like Jornet.
The large majority of those
who venture up Everest
still take extra oxygen.

oped a comprehensive net-
work to combat the spread
of West Nile virus, which
is transmitted by mosqui-
toes. This network, which
covers over 40 counties,
includes trapping mosqui-
toes, collecting dead birds
and monitoring both horses
and people. In addition, for
the past few years, sentinel
chickens are also being in-
cluded in the list of species
to be observed for any signs
of the virus.
Although West Nile Virus
is one of the factors in the
decline of Ruffed Grouse
and Timberdoodles, the
agencies also blame the loss
of young forests.
The Ruffed Grouse,
Bonasa umbellus, has been
Pennsylvanias official state
bird since 1931, and its
beauty is admired by hunt-
ers and non-hunters alike.
Grouse are still fairly plen-
tiful in some parts of Penns
Woods, although theyre
not nearly as abundant to-
day as they were a hundred
years ago.
Early in the 20th century,
much of Pennsylvania pro-
vided excellent grouse hab-
itat in brushy, logged-off
forest areas. Today, these
areas have grown up, or
matured, and offer less
suitable low cover.
Grouse are shy birds,
and their range has shrunk
where cities and towns have
expanded; they dont read-
ily adapt to civilization.
There are certain types of
environments that will pro-
mote the increase of these
species: Mountain laurel
and greenbrier thickets,
especially those including
some hemlocks or white
pines sprout growth in ar-
eas that have been burned,
or logged within the last
10 years, and are growing
up again; dense pine clus-
ters in immature hardwood
forests; stands of wild crab
and hawthorn trees; edges
provided by logging roads
and trails through wooded
areas; and abandoned apple

The American Wood-
cock, Scolopax minor, also
known affectionately as
the Timberdoodle, is a
ground-dwelling bird that
lives in young forests and
shrub lands. Woodcock
breed across eastern North
America and spend the
winter in lowlands from
the Mid-Atlantic south to
the Gulf Coast states.
In the past, Woodcock
were abundant, because
plenty of young forests
also called early succes-
sional habitat existed
in their range. Pennsylvania
lost 30 percent of its young
forests between 1980 and
2005, and declines con-
tinue, Williams said. Just
five percent of Pennsylva-
nia forests are young up
to 19 years old, according to
the 2014 forest inventory
data, collected by the U.S.
Department of Agricul-
tures Forest Service.
Reverting farm fields
and bottomland, the loss
of young forestland to tree
maturation and land-use
changes have hurt these
popular native game birds.
Although grouse mortal-
ity is also tied to the West
Nile virus, habitat is the
key to keeping the state bird
abundant in Penns Woods.
Its a conclusion resource
managers support.
Williams and Just came
up with an approach that
evolved into an interagency
habitat prescription service
that leans heavily on col-
laboration and cooperation.
They head into the hills to
work with DCNR foresters
on projects for grouse and
woodcock throughout the
state. They estimate their
teamwork has led to about
1,000 acres of new grouse
and woodcock habitat be-
ing created annually.

their strengths, so proj-
ects dont get held up
anywhere, Williams said.
Now we have as many re-
quests as we have time to
handle.
Aspen is promoted where
possible, because it is an
important tree for Ruffed
Grouse, providing food for
the birds buds, catkins,
leaves all year long, Wil-
liams said. Unfortunately,
Aspens distribution is now
threatened by landowner
neglect it needs to be
managed actively and by
Pennsylvanias maturing
forests. A colonizing spe-
cies, Aspen filled in the bar-
ren landscape after defor-
estation had leveled Penns
Woods early in the 20th
century and farmland re-
verted to forest. Grouse re-
sponded, and Pennsylvania
had fantastic upland hunt-
ing. Today, Aspen makes up
only a small portion of the
states forestland.
The planning is compli-
cated, and getting the work
done at a large enough scale
to benefit wildlife takes
many partners. Just points
out that the Ruffed Grouse
Society, National Wild Tur-
key Federation, U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Services Partners
for Wildlife, and the Wild-
life Management Institute
have all been strong sup-
porters of this ongoing
partnership.
Many hands are needed,
because the effort to cor-
rect the deficiencies in the
Commonwealths Grouse
taken lawfully.
The Foundation had the
elk mounted as a courtesy
and last year included it
in its traveling Great Elk
Tour display, which made
24 stops in 20 states. In
Pennsylvania, the tour
stopped at the Great
American Outdoor Show
in Harrisburg in February
2016, and in Benezette,
Elk County, at the height
of the September bugling
season.
Because this bull was
taken through poaching,
it allowed us to talk about
the importance of legal and
ethical hunting, and the
very important role it plays
in conservation, the Foun-
dations Mark Holyoak said.
And because this mount
was displayed in so many
states across the country, it

The Sentinel
and Woodcock habitat is
no small undertaking. Wil-
liams estimates Pennsylva-
nia is about 800,000 acres
short of the young forest
habitat it had in the 1980s.
In 2013, the American
Bird Conservancy identi-
fied early-successional
forests as one of the Top 10
most-threatened bird hab-
itats in America, Williams
said.
The loss of young for-
ests means trouble for the
species that need it, Wil-
liams said. In addition
to Grouse and Woodcock,
dozens of other species
are declining. Change is
needed to ensure they can
have healthy populations in
the future.
The work we have been
doing with the Woodcock
has been especially encour-
aging, Williams was happy
to point out.
Spring surveys indicate
were supporting eight
times the number of Wood-
cocks in managed sites than
we see in unmanaged sites,
where Woodcock numbers
remain stalled.
The Game Commis-
sion and DCNR have been
producing young forests
through their commercial
timber operations for de-
cades. They each cut thou-
sands of acres annually.
Even so, with a deficit of
800,000 acres, every new
acre of early successional
habitat matters for both
our Grouse and Woodcock.
If you have ever heard a
male Ruffed Grouse drum-
ming on a log in the spring,
trying to entice a female to
join him, or have had the
chance to observe the Tim-
berdoodle spiraling upward
at dusk in its very unique
mating ritual, then you will
appreciate the special gifts
these native Penns Woods
gamebirds provide for all
to enjoy. It is not too late to
save these amazing birds for
future generations, but the
time is now, for it will take
years to restore the habitat
they need to thrive.

out the area where the gi-
ant bull had been hanging
out and was quick to inter-
cept the poachers after the
shot rang out. The three
men each pleaded guilty
to their charges, and their
sentences included time in
jail and fines totaling almost
$39,000.
