She was disappointed by the delay, but
Lisa Greenwood remained hopeful Fonyo would be released
in time for the wedding on the Vancouver
Island beach that bears his name.
“The wedding is going as planned,”
Greenwood insisted.
“As long as we get him out.”
A group of Vancouver Island businesses
had offered to cater the wedding, then
backed out after learning Greenwood had
been jailed for shoplifting.
Greenwood said the conviction was a
souvenir of a past bad relationship and she
has “dealt with it” by serving her sentence.
A retired florist from Saanich, Norma
Fitzsimmons, has since stepped in to fill the
gap with donations from other businesses.
Greenwood said Fitzsimmons appears
willing to continue with the wedding
arrangements despite the news.
The couple just moved into a new home
in Surrey only to find the owner of the
property wasn’t willing to rent because
the planned sale of the house had fallen
through.
“I’m homeless” Greenwood said.
“I’m staying with friends.”
Fonyo, who lost a leg to cancer, raised $13
million for cancer research in 1985 when he
ran across Canada.

Never again
W
ith long-standing publication bans now lifted on evidence
from the Robert William Pickton trial, the horror of his crimes
is once again front and centre.
So are society’s shortcomings.
In light of new details released in recent days, family members of the
missing women have renewed their calls for a public inquiry into the police
handling of the case.
Vancouver Police, the RCMP and the City of Vancouver support the
notion, which B.C.’s attorney general is considering.
Last week, VPD issued an apology for not catching Pickton sooner.
But any shortcomings in this case go beyond what the cops did or did
not do.
The women Pickton murdered were victimized long before they met their
violent ends on a Port Coquitlam pig farm.
Most came from chaotic family backgrounds and were shuttled through
numerous foster homes during childhood.
Their needs for counselling and other professional intervention were
ignored, and they easily fell prey to drug dealers and pimps.
Despite being highly visible – strolling the streets for “dates” to support
their addictions or becoming frequent flyers at the local lock-up as their
risky lifestyles repeatedly roused trouble – the women were ignored.
When they went missing, nobody – save for their friends and loved
ones – cared.
The Pickton saga shined a harsh light on the lives of the women of the
Downtown Eastside, the desperation of their existence almost as disturbing
as the details of their deaths.
While it’s too late for Pickton’s victims, the challenges for another genera-
tion of vulnerable women continue in the city’s core. Poverty, substance
abuse and mental illness still wreak havoc, while remedies such as afford-
able housing and adequate health care are lacking.
When it came to recognizing the plight of a vulnerable demographic, it
took a serial killer to command our collective attention.
Let’s not lose the focus once the Pickton stories fade away.

Compost The benefits of pine beetle epidemics

tion for allowing industry to locate
just about anywhere, regardless of
neighbourhoods?
I agree with the strong objections
held by Hazelmere residents to the
proposed composting facility in
their vicinity.
A few years ago, when the Spade
Holdings Ltd. composting facility,
located within the ALR near the
Nicomekl River, was in full opera-
tion, local Cloverdale residents were
appalled by the company’s lack of
consultation with area residents.
Our neighbourhood became
flooded with foul odours, no matter
which way the wind was blowing.
In summer, the flies were
everywhere and crows blackened
the skies. At any time of year, area
residents were instructed by GVRD
to phone its hotline in an attempt
to monitor whenever, and perhaps
why, the stench was particularly
overwhelming.
Was the recent commercial
composting operation in Clover-
dale an industrial or an agricul-
tural activity? By whatever label,
the effect of such activity degraded
our community.
Last year, I became alarmed by a
newspaper article about the Metro
Vancouver Solid Waste Manage-
ment Plan (SWMP) in which it
indicated that Metro Vancouver
was considering to site a residen-
tial drop-off facility (RDO) for
household waste, recyclables and
compostibles in Surrey in either
Cloverdale or South Surrey.
When I phoned Rob Costanzo,
deputy manager of operations at
Surrey’s engineering department,
I was assured that wherever this
facility is to be situated it will need
to be established on High Impact
Industrial zoned lands, and not near
a residential zoned area.
Definitely, the SWMP’s greater
emphasis upon recycling/compost
and reuse rather than landfill waste
can be seen as progressive.
However, it is a big step back-
ward when we do not protect our
environment and place in peril our
water resources and fisheries.
At the end of the day, we simply
cannot afford to risk our agricultural
lands under the guise of “sustain-
ability” and “waste diversion needs.”

Surrey wins bronze, White Rock gets gold in New Brunswick

Demore started the day pitch-

down 2-0. She then pitched four
and two-thirds innings, shutting
out the Lightning while allowing
just two hits and striking out 10
batters.
The Storm made the most of just
five hits and four walks allowed by
Winnipeg pitchers. Five Lightning
errors led to seven unearned Sur-
rey runs in an 8-2 victory.
Demore pitched again two
hours later, tossing a two-hitter in
a 1-0 extra-innings win over the
Quebec Rebelles. Demore also had
two of Surrey’s three hits in the
contest, driving in Jamie Randal
for the winning run in the bottom
of the eighth frame.
The Storm made it three wins

In her husband’s loving arms,
with family at her side, Agnes
passed into Heaven on Friday,
August 6, 2010. She was born
May 6, 1924 in Vancouver,
B.C. to Thomas and Mary
Shannon. She grew up in
Vancouver with her six broth-
ers and sisters. In April of
1948 she married her hand-
some American soldier, the
love of her life, Glenn Kirk-
bride. They raised their four
children in North Seattle, and
retired to Birch Bay where they
recently celebrated their 62nd
wedding anniversary.
Everyone called her Grandma.
She always had cookie dough
in the fridge, ready to roll out
for family, church, and neigh-
borhood kids alike. With knit-
ting bag at her side, her hands
were never idle and her beau-
tiful baby blankets are treas-
ured by several generations.
She leaves her loving family
waiting to join her in Heaven
one day. Her husband Glenn;
children, Heather (Chuck),
Neal (Terry), Glenn (Tonya),
Barbara (Scott) and Noelle; 9
grandchildren; 8 great-grand-
children plus 2.
A memorial service will be
held on Wednesday, August
11, at 2 PM at Good News
Fellowship Church, 1252 W.
