Service Robots

Service robot is a robot which operates semi or fully autonomously to

perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment,
excluding manufacturing operations.
They assist human beings by performing jobs that are dirty, dull, dangerous
or repetitive including household chores.
They perform in non-industrial environments, like people's homes such as for
cleaning floors, mowing the lawn and pool maintenance.
It is also possible to use robots as assistants or butlers.
Examples : care-o-bot, cruzr, gita etc.

Robots in Agriculture

An agricultural robot or agribot is a robot deployed for agricultural purposes.

Main application of agribots is at the harvesting stage.
Other areas include weed control, cloud seeding, fruit picking, driverless
tractor, sprayer, sheep rearing etc.
With the development of robot farming system, food production can be
increased considerably and economically.
They cause less damage to the environment and protect workers from the
harmful effects of chemicals.
Examples: HV100, Farmbot, LSUs Agbot, Hortibot etc.

Agribots are taught by sensors. They use these sensors by marking spots that
need to be planted and memorizing them.
Mechanical design consists of an end effector, manipulator and gripper.
Several kinds of end effectors have been developed for the use in harvesting,
berry thinning, spraying ( using spray nozzle) and bagging.
Gripper, the grasping device, usually consists of two mechanical fingers that are
able to move in synchrony when performing their task.
Manipulator allows the gripper and end effector to navigate through their
environment. It consists of four-bar parallel links that maintain the grippers
position and height.

Robots in medical and surgery application

Medical robots are used in minimal invasive surgical procedures that reduce
trauma in surgery.
Robotically-assisted surgery was developed to overcome the limitations of
pre-existing minimally-invasive surgical procedures and to enhance the
capabilities of surgeons performing open surgery.
Surgeon uses either a direct telemanipulator or a computer controlled
instrument to perform the normal movements associated with the surgery.
In the case of enhanced open surgery, autonomous instruments replace
traditional steel tools, performing actions with much smoother, feedback-
controlled motions than could be achieved by a human hand.

They are widely used for general surgery, colon and rectal surgery,
cardiology and electrophysiology, neurosurgery, spine surgery, urology,
vascular surgery etc.
Due to robotic use, the surgery is done with precision, miniaturization,
smaller incisions; decreased blood loss, less pain, and quicker healing time.
Some scientists are attempting to miniaturize the robots. Scientists believe
that tiny robots (called nanorobots) will be developed which will be used
in patients bloodstreams to cure illness.

Robots in space exploration

Space robots are robotic devices used to aid, augment, or substitute for
astronauts in order to do difficult or rote tasks such as repairs in dangerous
environments (such as those with radiation or micrometeorite risks), routine
procedures (video capture), etc.
NASA is constantly developing and producing robots which can perform
maintenance in space especially on its International Space Station.
Robonaut is a joint DARPANASA project designed to create a humanoid robot
which can function as an equivalent to humans during extra-vehicular activity
(space walks) and exploration.

Examples of space robots include:

1. RASSOR (Regolith Advanced Surface Systems Operations Robot), is a
lunar robot to autonomously excavate soil.
2. Dextre, a two armed telemanipulator on ISS which replaces activities
otherwise requiring spacewalks.
3. The mars rover Curiosity contains an entire inboard laboratory for
analysing the soil and rocks on Mars.
4. Pioneer is a robot developed in response to the Chernobyl disaster to
clear rubble, make maps, and acquire samples inside the Chernobyl Unit
4 reactor building.

Robots in manufacturing

Industrial robots are used for manufacturing. They are automated,

programmable and capable of movement on two or more axes.
Typical applications of robots include welding, painting, assembly, pick and
place for printed circuit boards, packaging and labelling, palletizing,
product inspection, and testing.
They can help in material handling and provide interfaces.
Robots are very useful in food processing since it needs to be done in a
germ-free environment
Robots in manufacturing(continued)

Commonly used manufacturing robots are :

1. AGV (Automated guided vehicle) is a mobile robot that follows markers or wires
in the floor, or uses vision or lasers.
2. Palletizer is Used for stacking products on pallets for shipping and storage.
3. SCARA (Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm) is an assembly robot. Its
arm was rigid in the Z-axis and pliable in the XY-axes, which allowed it to adapt
to holes in the XY-axes.
4. An articulated robot is one which uses rotary joints to access its work space.
Usually the joints are arranged in a chain, so that one joint supports another
further in the chain.
5. Gantry robots are used for CNC controlled milling, drawing application and for
3D printing.
