This section describes the required network knowledge and commissioning experience for
the equipment commissioning.
Before commissioning the equipment by referring to this manual, the commissioning
personnel should receive trainings on how to commission optical network equipment.
Basic Requirements for Commissioning
The commissioning personnel of Huawei equipment must receive strict training and
be familiar with the proper operation methods and safety precautions before any
operation.
Only the qualified and skilled personnel are allowed to install, operate, and
maintain the equipment.
Only the certified professionals are allowed to remove the safety facilities, and to
troubleshoot and maintain the equipment.
Any replacement or change of the equipment or parts of the equipment (including
the software) must be performed by the certified or authorized personnel of
Huawei. Any fault or error that may cause a safety problem must be reported
immediately to the person in charge.

The next topic describes the commissioning process of the equipment. The commissioning
process involves three phases: the preparations for commissioning, Site commissioning and
System commissioning. Each phase has detailed focuses or commissioning steps.
Generally, commissioning items can be classified into two categories: optional and required.
We will focus more on the required items.

It provides guides to the operations that may cause injury on human bodies and damage
on the equipment if they are misconducted during the commissioning and maintenance of
microwave equipment.
Operation Guide to the Toggle Lever Switch
The ODU-PWR switch on the IF board is a toggle lever switch. When you turn on
or turn off the toggle lever switch, perform the operations in strict compliance
with the guidelines. Otherwise, the IF board may be damaged.
Operation Guide to the IF Jumper
Before removing or installing an IF jumper, turn off the ODU-PWR. Otherwise, the
body injury may be caused, and the IF board or the ODU may be damaged.
Operation Guide to the IF Cable

The commissioning items are classified into two categories: site commissioning items and
system commissioning items.
Site Commissioning Items

Site commissioning involves the commissioning of a hop of radio link and

the sites on both ends. The purpose of site commissioning is to ensure that
the hop of radio link is in normal state and to prepare for system
commissioning.
System Commissioning Items

System commissioning involves the commissioning of the entire radio

transmission network. The purpose of system commissioning is to ensure
that various services are transmitted normally and protection functions are
realized over the radio transmission network.
In the case of OptiX RTN 980L, Commissioning engineers can configure the site
commissioning data by using the Web LCT on site when the following conditions are met:
Commissioning engineers are capable of configuring the radio link data for the
OptiX RTN 980L.
Commissioning engineers know the radio link data planning for the site.
Commissioning engineers carry a laptop on which the Web LCT is installed.

Hop Commissioning
When the scale of the radio transmission network is limited (to only one or two
hops), the hop commissioning method applies. Hop commissioning combines site
commissioning and system commissioning. The major commissioning steps are as
follows:
Power on the equipment on both ends of the radio link and use the Web
LCT to configure all the data for the site.
Align the antennas on both ends of the radio link.
Check and ensure that the status of the radio link is normal.
Use the Web LCT to commission certain items according to the services
transmitted over the radio link.
Network Commissioning
When the scale of the radio transmission network is large, the network
commissioning method applies. The major commissioning steps are as follows:
Power on the equipment on both ends of the radio link and use the Web
LCT to configure the radio link data for the site.
Align the antennas on both ends of the radio link.
Check and ensure that the status of the radio link is normal.
Use the NMS to configure the network-wide data at the central site where
services converge.
Use the NMS to complete the network-wide commissioning items at the
central site where services converge.

CAUTION
If the equipment is configured with two PIU boards, the two PIU boards must be
provided with the input power of the same nominal voltage.
The ODU-PWR switches on the front panels of the IF boards are equipped with
locking devices. Hence, you must pull out the switches gently before you turn
them. If the switch is at the "O" position, it indicates that the switch is off. If the
switch is at the "I" position, it indicates that the switch is on.
If the output voltage of the power supply does not meet the test requirements, do
not power on the cabinet. First, reconstruct the power supply and then test the
output voltage again.

During the installation of fiber jumpers, the fiber jumpers may be incorrectly connected or the
attenuation may be very high. As a result, the services may fail to run normally. To prevent this
situation, check the fiber jumper connection after the fiber jumper is routed from the optical
interface to the optical distribution frame (ODF).
Procedure
On the chassis side, disconnect the fiber jumper from the TX port of an optical interface
board.
Connect the optical power meter to the OUT port of the optical interface board with a
short fiber jumper.
Switch on the optical power meter and set the operating wavelength according to the
optical interface type. The measured launched optical power of the optical interface board
is A.
Insert the fiber jumper back to the TX port.
On the ODF side, disconnect the fiber jumper from the TX port. Connect the fiber jumper
to the optical power meter. The measured optical power is B.
Disconnect the fiber jumper from the corresponding TX port of the optical interface board.
The optical power meter reads "LO" and does not receive optical signals.
Compare the values of A and B.

If the difference between A and B is less than 1 dB, it indicates that the fiber
jumper is correctly connected and the attenuation of the fiber jumper is within the
normal range.
If the difference between A and B is more than 1 dB, check and ensure that the
fiber jumper is in good condition and is correctly routed. Then, check and ensure
that the fiber jumper terminal is clean.
Check the fiber jumper that is connected to the RX port in the same manner.
Recover the fiber jumper connections on the chassis side and on the ODF side.
Repeat above steps to check fiber jumper connections of the other optical interfaces.
