Description
Apaddlehastwoparts:ahandleandablade.Mostpaddlesaredesignedtobeheldwithonehand,butagiantpaddlemaybedesignedtobeheldwithtwo
hands.[1]Thebladeistypically3to4inches(100mm)wide,1/4inchthick,and1to3feet(0.91m)inlength.

Inthegreatmajorityofcases,thepaddleisaimedattherecipient'sbuttocksrarely,thebackofthethighsmightalsobetargeted.[2]

Paddlesforuseinschoolsaremadeofwood,oroccasionallyplastic.[3]Paddlesusedforschoolpunishmentsmayberoughlyhewnfromcommonlyavailable
wood.[4]Occasionally,paddlesmayhaveholesdrilledintothem,sothereislessairdragwhenthepaddleapproachesthebuttocks,andproducesmoresting.The
paddlesusedforfraternityandsororityinitiationceremoniesareoftenprofessionallymadeandengravedwithorganizationalsymbolsandslogans.[5]

Thepaddlemayhavebeenoriginallyinventedforthepunishmentofslavesasawayofcausingintensepainwithout
doinganypermanentdamagetotherecipient.[6]Itisnotonlyinformerslavestatesthatthepaddlehasbeenusedin
schools.ItisnotknownwhyorexactlywhenitbecamethenormalimplementforcorporalpunishmentinUSschools.
Therearehoweverinstancesofpaddlingusingsimilarimplementswithindividualswhowerenotslaves.

Scopeofuse
PaddlingwasmainlyusedinmanypartsoftheUnitedStates(andstillis,inafewareas)asameanstodiscipline
misbehavingschoolstudents.Paddlinghasalsobeenusedinsomehomestopunishchildren.[7][8]Theresultsofa
nationalhouseholdsurveyindicatethatpaddlingisadisciplinetechniquethat10%ofparentsare"verylikelytouse".
Thepercentageofparentswhosaythattheyareverylikelytopaddleincreasesto12%wheninvolvingteenagers.[9]

ThepaddleisthealmostinvariableimplementinUSschoolsthatstillallowcorporalpunishmentforstudent
misconduct.Somepaddleshavetraditionallyhadholesboredinthemforaerodynamiceffect,[10]butmanyschools

Paddlingtypicallycausesaslightreddeningoftheskinbutinsomecasescancausebruisesthatare"visiblefor
approximatelytwoweeks".[13]Whetherornotparticularbruisesconstituteevidenceof"seriousinjury"or"abuse"[14]
or"childmaltreatment"[15]dependsonindividualcircumstancesandcanultimatelybesettledonlybyacourtoflaw.

Therehavebeencasesinthepastwhenpaddlingwasadministeredincorrectlyorexcessively.Partlyinordertoavoid
thisdanger,inthemajorityofU.S.schools,paddlingismorestrictlyregulatedthaninthepast,manyschools
publishingdetailedrulesintheirstudenthandbooks.[16]Itisusuallyarequirementthataprofessionalwitnessbe
present.Currently,thereisoftenamaximumofthreeswats(or"licks"or"pops").Inthepast,paddlingsofupto30[17]

lickswerenotunknown,especiallyinruralschools.Practicehasgraduallymovedfrompaddlingsintheclassroomor
punishedinanAmericanprison

In1981,a17yearoldstudentclaimedbleedingwoundsasaresultofaschoolpaddling.[18]Itwasallegedthattheassistantprincipalwhohadadministeredthe
punishmenthadheldandswungthepaddlewithtwohands.[19]Inordertopreventsuchclaims,aschooldistrictcurrentlymaychoosetorequirethehandleofa
spankingpaddletobe"justlargeenoughforanormalonehandgrip".[20]Orarulemightprovidethatthehandleshallnotbemorethan4inches(100mm)long
(justlargeenoughtobeheldwithonehand).[21]

cracksorholesandthatwillcausenomorethantemporarypainandnotinflictpermanentdamagetothebody."[23]

Apaddlingistypicallyadministeredwithtwoormoreschoolemployeespresent.Thestudentmaybeorderedtobendoverachair[24]ordesk[25]and,inthat
position,receivetheprescribednumberofstrokesofthepaddle.Paddlingusuallyoccursinanofficebutmaysometimesoccurinahallway.Thepunishmentis
deliveredacrosstheseatofthestudent'strousersorskirt.

Inordertoavoidallegationsofsexualabuse,manyschooldistrictsrequirethatafemaleteacherbepresentduringthepaddlingofafemalestudent.[26]Aschool
mightalsorecommend"thatfemalestaffmembersadministercorporalpunishmenttofemalestudents(middleandhighschool)".[27]Oraschoolboardmight
prescribethata"femaleprincipal(s)ordesigneeshallspankorpaddlefemalestudents"andthata"maleprincipal(s)ordesigneeshallspankorpaddlemale
students."[28]

Socialdiscipline

Someuniversityorcollegetraditionsenforce(d)rulesbypaddlingoffenders.IntheUniversityofMissouriuntilWorldWarII,[29]anyfreshmanfoundonthe
'quad',themostprestigioussquareoncampus,hadtoofferhis'insolent'posteriorforpunishmentalongapaddlelineformedbyswattingseniors.
Fraternitiesandsororitiesarecommonlyassociatedwithpaddlingofmembers,especiallynewmembersorpledges,aspartoftheirhazingrituals.[30][31]
Duetomodernantihazinglaws[32]andregulations,thishasdeclined.ThisentiresubcultureispeculiartoNorthAmerica.

Otherplayandtraditions

Thepaddleisalsoafavoriteimplementfornondisciplinary"fun"spankingssuchas"birthdayspankings,"asalsoforpaddlegames(suchastradingblows)ora
spankingpyramidorpaddlemachine.Apaddlemachinecanbeusedinconjunctionwithaspankingbench.Numerouscelebrities,includingJessicaJaymes,
