However, for designer Joe Currie of Austin, TX-

when he was asked to design a custom space in
the clients modern interpretation of a castle.
Currie has made a living creating custom
designs, both for furniture and for kitchens
and other rooms. There are two memorable
projects that stand out above the rest for him, This kitchen overlooking the Pentagon combined two apartments into a 3,500-sq.-ft. living space for a

to complete. There was so much work done
on the front end to get everything picked out
because they wanted to have it done before

A CUSTOM CAREER
Currie got into the design business by doing a

Eliminating upper cabinets gave Jim Madsen the ability to create a wall of windows that extends from the
living room, through the kitchen, into the dining room and around the corner of the house. One window spans
an unobstructed 14' view from the kitchen sink.
The wet bar showcases many of the same elements as the kitchen, including walnut cabinetry and Spec-

a place for guests to gather, dine and linger while overlooking the property that

Because of the multiple levels of the previous design, it was quite an engineer-

The Roll-out Revolution

Storage considerations are top of mind in todays kitchens, where a proliferation of
products can simplify function and accessibility as well as enhance aesthetics.

Drawers are one of Nancy Jacobsons favorite storage elements

because of their ease of use and ability to store almost everything.
Storage either a lack of or inefficiency of is often a reason why

storage solutions. In some kitchens, canisters on the coun-

tertop are coming back, says the owner of Maison Maison,
in Houston, TX. Storage containers have to be much more
attractive given that open shelving has become a trend.
As such, baskets are particularly popular with Duins cli-
ents. They are attractive, yet useful, she reports, noting one
of her designs, which features a butlers pantry lined with bas-
kets, has been added to more than 78,000 ideabooks on Houzz.
For example, my clients can have one basket for crackers and
another for dried pastas, etc. They are easier for the client, and
especially children, to access contents.

same for wall cabinets that are eliminated near a sink. People
still need to keep items, such as towels and cutting boards,

Lifestyle changes including the way people cook and eat

KITCHEN STORAGE

Because storage is so important, storage considerations are

often one of the first issues designers discuss with clients at
the start of a kitchen project.
Storage comes up at the first meeting, reports Nordquist.
Typically, when we talk about appliances and how they fit into
the plan, we also talk about storage needs because so many
people have specialty coffee makers, mixers, etc., which all
need specialty storage, which ultimately affects the layout.
Storage enters into the equation early on for Duin as well.
Storage is always addressed at the point of drawing out the
cabinets, she adds. From the very beginning, we focus on
storage needs.

EVOLUTIONARY CHANGES
While the most groundbreaking changes affecting storage
may have occurred years ago, ongoing changes continue to
enhance storage both functionally and aesthetically.
I see storage going through more of an evolution of the
groundbreaking introductions that happened 15 to 20 years
ago, observes Erik Mehr, erik kitchen design, in Avon, NJ.
I dont think overall storage needs have changed too much.
Instead, what I do see changing is the quality of interior stor-
age features that are now available. They are sturdier and pull
out more smoothly. They are also more efficient and provide
greater accessibility as well as being available in higher-end
finishes and appearances. In the case of corner storage, we
now have highly engineered corner pieces that articulate out.
For example, earlier versions of corner cabinet turntables
were much more difficult to operate, he explains. They were
flimsy and easily unbalanced, he states. Now, those from
the better suppliers are sturdy and are offered in chrome and
other nice finishes. Some even have glass sides. They are
much more high-end all the way around. For cabinet interiors,
we are seeing options other than plywood and melamine, and
weve seen upgrades from typical maple drawers to walnut.
While these changes do offer improved functionality, they
are still luxury items, he continues. People arent purchasing
them for visitors to their kitchens. They are purchasing them
for themselves. When they pull open a drawer or cabinet, they
are pleased by what they see. Its a little treat to see a nice,
luxurious interior.
Jacobson has also noticed the availability of upgraded
accessories as well as an added emphasis on aesthetics.
Materials/finishes used in accessories also have more options

are also changing. New units where the trays move forward
together as the door opens are seen as an alternative to indi-
vidual roll-outs in pantries. Soft-close glides, which used to
be limited to drawer cabinets, are now available on all types of
accessories such as pull-out spice units and tray storage.
For Nordquist, its about accessories that provide special-
ized storage, especially related to pots and pans and knives.
Charging stations that can be hidden inside drawers are
popular as well.

says Jacobson.
With pegs or adjustable dividers, clients have the flexibili-
ty to change configurations along the way, adds Nordquist.

REEXAMINING THE CLASSICS
Todays kitchen storage also focuses on reexamining many
classic storage concepts including drawers, pantries and
appliance garages and incorporating new twists.
Drawers are currently in vogue, offering convenient storage
and ease of operation. Kelly prefers them over roll-out shelves,
noting that drawers can save valuable minutes in a daily
routine.
One of the biggest changes we have seen with regard to
storage is the pull-out [roll-out shelf ], offers Kelly. But con-
sider that you need to first open a door before reaching inside
to pull out the shelf. After looking to see if what you need is
inside, you can take it out, push the shelf and close the door.
Thats a lot of work for a can of soup.
Instead, we tend to do a lot of drawers with interiors that
we custom divide based on needs, he continues. You can use
one hand to open the drawer and the other to grab what you
need. Drawers are all self-closing so you barely touch them
and they pull themselves closed. All of that happens in a mat-
ter of a few seconds.
Jacobson also likes to incorporate drawers. With one hand
and one motion, the homeowners can open the drawer to
reach whatever they need, she explains. Drawers can be used

to store almost everything in base cabinets, including utensils,
bowls, Tupperware, measuring cups, pots/pans, bakeware,
placemats, silverware, colanders, small appliances, dry food
storage and pantry items. Drawers also look great when placed
properly in the design.
Mehr adds that drawers can also be less expensive than
cabinets with roll-out shelves, so he encourages clients to
consider the former, routinely specifying three drawer bases in
many of his designs. Suzanne Duins clients often request exposed storage, such as
Drawers are priced competitively with typical one-draw- open shelves, which require attractive storage solutions. Baskets

kitchens Candace Nordquist designs. Oftentimes she uses ones

Home offices are incorporated into almost every room in the
house now, according to Dutka, which has led him to doing
more custom cabinets. Among his offerings is a remote-
control retractable wall bed that can work within custom cabi-
net solutions that he designs.
The bed snakes out of a big drawer at the bottom of the
cabinet, making a right angle, he explains. You end up with

had different ideas of what the home office should look
like, she remarks.

DETAILS, DETAILS
Beyond working within the space, the home office needs to
incorporate functional pieces and thoughtful design to meet
the clients expectations. This requires special care when
choosing elements that will provide optimum service for the
homeowner.
To meet the ergonomic needs of the client, Dutka places
significant stress on elements surrounding the computer
station. Some people dont want keyboard trays, but then they
end up keying too high or low, or end up with carpal tunnel
syndrome, he stresses. Because of this, he incorporates high-
end keyboard trays into his designs that have negative tilt, and
go up and down.
And, while all concur that a home office needs great
lighting, natural light might not be the designs best friend.
The amount of daylight that windows provide may need to
be screened in order to see the computer monitor, notes
George Deasy, residential designer, DeasyGroup in Mt.
Vernon, WA.
While lighting may warm the space and give it a lift, dis-
tinctive touches make the room ones own.
Soto notes that, lately, she has used a lot of reclaimed wood
for countertops in home offices to make it more homey.

This was the case for architect Doug Burdge, AIA, of

the Malibu, CA-based Burdge & Associates Architects, who
modeled this luxury residence after homes in Cape Cod. He
explains, The two-story home maximizes the plentiful ocean
views with floor-to-ceiling windows, French doors and a wrap-
around patio.
Burdge continues, Taking advantage of the mild Malibu
weather, the open-air pavilion includes a fireplace and an
outdoor kitchen with a grill, dishwasher, pizza oven and
bars for entertaining. The covered patio complements a re-
sort-style pool, sunken lounge area and fire pit for year-round
gatherings.
The outdoor kitchen has every possible amenity, including
an Earthstone pizza oven, Viking barbecue, side burner, hood,
undercounter ice maker and undercounter refrigerator, Perlick
undercounter freezer, Sharp microwave, Asko dishwasher and
InSinkErator disposal unit.
Burdge explains, Most of our projects are in Malibu,

In this case, designer Deborah Chatfield of the Rockport,

recent trip to Italy provided the inspiration for an outdoor
kitchen built around a pizza oven theyd brought back with
them from their trip.
Theyre all about food, Chatfield joked, explaining that
the couple had learned to cook on a pizza oven while in Italy
and had enjoyed the experience so much, they ended up
bringing the pizza oven home with them and then building an
outdoor space around it.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Out of Sight 1

I ts often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Nowhere is

that idea more true than in the design of a kitchen. While aesthetics
are essentially a given when creating the ideal kitchen, what really
makes the room a dream for the people who use it every day is the way
it functions. Clever storage, a place for everything and easy operation are
essential to making the kitchen the optimum space to cook, gather with
the family and entertain friends.
2
Those hidden gems whats behind the cabinet doors are what
make the kitchen work for a homeowner. Pull-out shelves, easy-glide
drawers and access to the deepest corners and highest cabinets make
3
storage efficient and operation a breeze.
On this and the next two pages, KBDN takes a look at some of the
products that bring a new definition to efficiency and accessibility in
the kitchen.

1. The Rollout Tray Kit from Keystone Wood Specialties includes dovetailed
or doweled drawer box trays, a choice of side-mount or under-mount drawer
slides, tray bumpers and the QuikTRAY Rollout System screws included.

smooth movement, locking into position during use, and gently folding up
and back into the cabinet. Available in a range of colors, the iMove is offered
in a one- or two-shelf configuration.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Small, Segmented Kitchen Takes a Load Off

BEFORE
This segmented Corona del Mar, CA kitchen was
not conducive to entertaining for the clients, who
had recently become empty nesters. The galley
kitchen was very narrow with little work space,
storage and seating.

AFTER
The goal of this project for Dave Eslinger of Sea
Pointe Construction in Irvine, CA was to create a
great entertaining space and take advantage of
the existing Southern California view, previously
blocked from the segmented kitchen. However, in
expanding the kitchen and integrating it into the
living space, Eslinger faced a large challenge: To
open up the kitchen, a load-bearing wall needed
to be removed. To make the structural change,
Eslinger had to expand and reconfigure the
kitchen, opening it up to the living space. Another
challenge was to provide additional storage
within the kitchen and allow more seating. With
the structural wall gone, Eslinger could add an
oversized peninsula, which provided more prep
space and seating. Additionally, he shortened
a window in the kitchen to add wall space and
raised the cabinets to ceiling height without get-
ting in the way of the view. By cutting the homes
interior slab to be level with the exterior, making
the foundation flush, Eslinger was able to install
La Cantina bi-fold doors that allowed for a smooth
