Licensing
Licensing
DameWarestandalonesoftwareislicensedperuser,andeachlicenseallowsyoutoinstallon3computers.The
RemoteSupportClientAgentServiceisnotlicensedandtherearenoadditionalfeesforinstallingtheserviceon
remotesystems.Forexample,ifyouhave10computersrunningRemoteSupportandyouuseRemoteSupportto
manage10,000remotesystems,youonlyneedtolicensethe10RemoteSupportcomputerstomaintaincom-
pliancewiththeSolarWindsEndUserLicenseAgreement(EULA).Topurchaselicenses,visit
www.dameware.com.

TheDameWarecentralizedversionislicensedperuser,butthelicensingandactivationoccurontheDameWare
CentralServerusingthecentralizedlicensekey.Thecentralizedlicenseincludesalicensedusercount,andeach
authorizedDameWareuserreducesthenumberofavailableuserlicenses.Forexample,ifyoupurchaseda10
userlicense,youcaninstallanduseRemoteSupportorMiniRemoteControlfromanycomputersolongasyou
canlogontotheDameWareCentralServeranddonotexceed10users.TheMiniRemoteControlClientAgentSer-
viceinthecentralizedversionisnotlicensedandtherearenoadditionalfeesforinstallingit.

Note:TocomplywiththeSolarWindsEULA,youcannotactivatebothstandaloneandcentralizedsoftwareatthe
sametime.
Connecting to the Central Server
Connecting to the Central Server
WhenyouhaveinstalledDameWareRemoteSupportorDameWareMiniRemoteControlincentralizedmode,you
mustfirstconnecttotheDameWareCentralServer.Thisallowsyoutologinanduseyourpersonalhostlistora
globalhostlist.

YoucanloginusingeitherWindowsauthentication,ifyourActiveDirectoryaccounthastheappropriateper-
missions,oryourDameWareCentralServercredentials.

YouneedthefollowinginformationtoconnecttotheDameWareCentralServer:

l DameWareCentralServerusernameandpassword,ifusingDameWareauthentication

l DameWareCentralServerIPaddressorhostname

l ServicePortNumber

TheDameWareCentralServerusernameandpasswordareindependentofyourothercredentialsandareestab-
lishedbyyourDameWareCentralServeradministrator.TheCentralServeradministratormustalsoprovidethe
DameWareCentralServerIPaddressorhostnameandtheportnumbertouse.

Note:Ifthisisyourfirsttimeconnecting,youshouldchangeyourpasswordfromadminafteryoulogonbynav-
igatingtoFile > Change Password.

To connect to the DameWare Central Server:

1. OntheLogin detailstab,either:
l SelectWindows authentication,tousetheActiveDirectorycredentialswithwhichyouloggedinto
yourmachineanddomain
Or:
l SelectDameWare authentication,andenteryourDameWareCentralServercredentials.
Note:Ifyouhaveforgottenyourpassword,contactyourDameWareCentralServeradministratorto
haveitreset.
2. If you do not want to enter your credentials each time,selectRemember the last connection settings.

3. SelecttheAdvanced settingstab.

4. Thedefaultconnectionsettingsaredisplayed.Tochangethese,entertheDameWareCentralServerIP
addressorhostnameandportnumber.
Note:Thedefaultportis6133.

5. If you change the settings and want these to be used in future,clickSave as default.
Note:WhenyouclickReset to default,thelastsavedserverinformationpopulatesthefields.

6. If you do not want to display this dialog in future,selecttheDon't show againcheckbox.


Note:Thedialogmayappearbrieflybutdoesnotrequireinput.
7. ClickConnect to server.

To restore the Central Server Login Dialog:


IfyouhavechosennottoshowtheCentralServerLoginDialogandlaterdecidetorestoreit:

1. OntheRemoteSupportmainmenubar,gotoView > Properties.


2. SelecttheGeneraltabifnotdisplayed,anddeselecttheDon't Show Central Server Login Dialogcheck-
box.
3. ClickOK.

Troubleshooting Your Central Server Connection


BeforeyoucanlogontotheDameWareCentralServeranduseRemoteSupportorMiniRemoteControlincent-
ralizedmode,theDameWareCentralServeradministratormustcreateanaccountforyoutouseandprovideyou
withtheCentralServerinformation.

Tologonyouneedthefollowinginformation:

l DameWareCentralServerusernameandpassword,iflogginginwithDameWareAuthorization

l IPaddressorhostnameoftheDameWareCentralServer

l PortnumberusedtocommunicatewiththeDameWareCentralServer(bydefault,thisis6133)

Note:UseanIPv4addressorahostname.If you must use an IPv6 address,youmustaddtheaddressandhost


nametoyourhostfile.SeeKB400151formoreinformation.

If you cannot logon to the Central Server and your user name and Central Server information are correct,you
mayhaveexceededthenumberoflicensedusersoryouraccountmaybedisabled.ContactyourDameWareCen-
tralServeradministratortoresolvethisissue.

EachtimeyoulogontoDameWareCentralServerfromRemoteSupportorMiniRemoteControlincentralized
mode,youcreateaCentralServersession.Youcancreatemultiplesessionsfromasinglecomputer,butyoucan-
notcreatesessionsfromdifferentcomputers.If you open a second session from another Remote Support or Mini
Remote Control console located on a different computer,yourpreviousCentralServersessionsareclosed.Other
reasonsforyoursessiontocloseincludeaCentralServeradministratorclosingitorbecauseyouwereidlefortoo
long.

Basic Components of MRC


TherearetwopartstotheMiniRemoteControlprogram:

TheMiniRemoteControlapplicationistheactualprograminstalledonyourlocalsystem.UsetheMiniRemote
Controlapplicationtocontroltheremotesystemsinyourenvironment.TheMiniRemoteControlclientagentser-
viceisasoftwarecomponentyoudeploytoremotesystemstoallowtheMiniRemoteControlapplicationtocon-
trolthem.ThisservicerunsinthebackgroundoftheremotesystemundertheLocalSystemaccount.Whenthere
isnotanactiveMiniRemoteControlconnection,theserviceuseslittletononeoftheremotesystem'sCPU.

TheWindowsoperatingsystemrequireslocationAdministratorrightstoinstall,remove,start,stop,orupgrade
theMiniRemoteControlclientagentserviceonremotesystems.Formoreinformationabouthowtoinstallthecli-
entagentservice,seeMiniRemoteControlClientAgentServiceInstallationMethods.

Note:AllMiniRemoteControlusersmustauthenticatetotheremotesystemstheyconnectto,sosimplyhaving

How DameWare Mini Remote Control Works


DameWareMiniRemoteControlisanagent-basedremotecontrolapplicationandthereforeconsistsoftwoparts:

l TheMiniRemoteControlapplication

l TheMiniRemoteControlclientagentservice

TheMiniRemoteControlapplicationistheprograminstalledonyourlocalsystemthatyouusetoconnecttothe
MiniRemoteControlclientagentandcontroltheremotecomputers.

TheMiniRemoteControlclientagentserviceisthesoftwarecomponentdeployedtocomputersthatallowsthe
MiniRemoteControlapplicationtocontrolthem.Thisservicerunsinthebackgroundoftheremotesystemunder
theLocalSystemaccount.WhenthereisnotanactiveMiniRemoteControlconnection,theserviceuseslittleto
noneoftheremotesystem'sCPU.
WhentheMiniRemoteControlapplicationattemptstoconnecttotheMiniRemoteControlclientagent,theclient
agentauthenticatesthecredentialslocallybeforeallowingtheconnection.Theinstalledclientagentservicedoes
notposeasecurityrisktotheremotecomputerbecausealluserprivilegesaregrantedbytheoperatingsystem
ontheremotecomputer.UsingMiniRemoteControldoesnotprovideuserswithgreaterprivilegesthanthey
wouldhaveiftheyloggedontothecomputerlocally.EveryprivilegetheMiniRemoteControluserhasmustbe
allowedbytheremotecomputer.

l Reconnect:Displaysalistofrecentconnections.SelectaconnectiontobypasstheRemoteConnectdialog
andreconnecttothatsystem.

l Disconnect:DisconnectstheMiniRemoteControlconnectionbetweenthelocalandremotesystems.

l Invite user to join remote session...:OpenstheInternetSessiondialog.Foradditionalinformation,see


InternetSessionDialog.
l Change Password:AllowsyoutochangeyourDameWareCentralServerpassword.

l Connect via Invitation:OpenstheConnectviaInvitationdialog.Thisdialogallowsyoutoconnectto


remotesystemsthatrequireaninvitationtoconnect.Foradditionalinformation,seeCreateInvitationDia-
log.

TheConnectviaInvitationdialogconsistsofthefollowingoptions:

l Invitation Entry:PasteordroptheMiniRemoteControlconnectioninvitationintothedialogentry
area.

l Browse:Browsetoasavedinvitationfromaremotesystem.

l Settings:DisplaystheDefaultHostPropertiesdialog.

l Require Permission:Indicateswhethertheinvitationrequirestheendusertoacceptthecon-
nection.ThiscannotbeeditedintheConnectviaInvitationdialog.

l Require Password:Indicateswhethertheinvitationrequiresapassword.Thiscannotbeeditedin
theConnectviaInvitationdialog.

l Accept Incoming Connection:OpenstheAcceptIncomingConnectdialog.Specifyaportnumberfor


remotesystemstousewhentheyattempttoconnectusingtheConnect to Clientoptionfromtheclient
agentservicecontextmenu.Foradditionalinformation,seeSysTrayIconContextMenu.

l New Window:OpensanewMiniRemoteControlwindow.

l Update Client Agent:Forcestheremotesystemtoupdatetheclientagentservice.


Note:ThisrequireslocalAdministratorrightswithintheOperatingSystemsecurityoftheremotemachine.

l Install Service:OpenstheServer(Service)InstallationdialogtopushtheMiniRemoteControlclient
agentservicetoaremotesystem.Thisdialogconsistsofthefollowingoptions:

l Machine Name:EnterorselectthehostnameorIPaddressoftheremotesystem.

l Set Service Startup type to "Manual" default is "Automatic":Selectthisoptiontochangethe


clientagentservicestartuptypetoManual.

l Include Configuration File (DWRCS.reg):CopiestheDWRCS.regfilefromthelocalsystemtothe


remotesystemwithpre-configuredMiniRemoteControlclientagentservicesettings.

l Configure:ClickthisbuttontoconfigurethesettingsoftheMiniRemoteControlclientagentservice
tocopytotheremotesystemifenabled.

l Copy FIPS Modules (approximately 9 MB):CopiestheFederalInformationProcessingStandard


(FIPS)modulestotheremotesystemwheninstallingtheMiniRemoteControlclientagentservice.

Note:TheFIPSmodulesarerequiredtoconnectinFIPSEncryptionMode.

l Overwrite any existing configuration on remote host:Selectthisoptiontorecreatethecon-


figurationfile(DWRCSU.cfg)ontheremotemachine
Note:AfterpushinganagentwiththeOverwrite any exciting configuration on remote host
functionality,youneedtoapprovetheagentonremotemachineagain.

l Remote Link:OpenstheSendAgentDownloadLinkdialog.Youmaysendtheremoteagentdownloadlink
toausertoconnectforunattendedsession.TheE-mail detailsbuttonsendstheunattendedagentdown-
loadlinktoanemail.TheCopy details to Clipboardbuttoncopiestheunattendedagentdownloadlinkfor

l Remove Service:OpenstheRemoveServicedialog.IntheMachine Namefield,enterorselectthehost-


nameorI PaddressofaremotesystemtoremovetheMiniRemoteControlclientagentservice.
l Take Screenshot:TakesascreenshotofthecurrentsessionandopenstheSaveAsdialogwhenconnected
toaremotesystem.
l Print:OpensthePrintdialog.

boardofanystuckkeysandcanbeusedwhentheremotesystemstopsacceptingkeyboardinput.

Whenaremotesystemisconnectedtomorethanonemonitor,theVirtual Desktopoptiondisplaysallofthecon-
nectedmonitorsintheMiniRemoteControlwindow.

FIPS Mode

Internet Session
YoucanconnecttousersoutsideofyournetworkbyopeninganInternetSession.Thisfeatureisonlyavailable
withDameWareRemoteSupport(version11.0orlater).

ToenablethisfeatureyoumustconfiguretheDameWareInternetProxyandalsoopenaportinyourorgan-
ization'sfirewalltoallowconnectionsbetweentheMiniRemoteControlapplicationandtheMiniRemoteControl
clientagentonthecomputeroutsideofyourinternalnetwork.

TheInternetSessioncreatesasessionwiththeoriginatingMiniRemoteControlapplicationasoneendpoint.The
endusermustmanuallyjointhesessionbyclickingonanInternetSessionLinkthatyousendthem.Thisallows
theDameWareagentontheircomputertotheInternetSession.Onlytwousers,atechnicianandanenduser,can
beconnectedtotheInternetSessionatthesametime.Ifanothertechnicianorendusertriestojointhesameses-
sion,thesessionwillend.

TosuccessfullyconnecttousersoutsideofyourinternalnetworkusingInternetSessions,ensurethatthefol-
