combined.

Choose from the Designers

below or pick a graphic
designer of your own choice.
David Carson, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Ijo Choose two actual designs to analyse and evaluate.

1) ANALYSE their artwork to find connections between the different artists work, the visual
conventions used and the viewpoints expressed. You should be able to discuss where the
Artists or Designer influences have been developed from. E.g. Artist was influenced from
these particular styles from. Students should be able to provide the example picture of the
artwork they are analysing. (Reference all Artwork used in the Visual Study)

Neville Brody ( just bounce it ) Joose Schmidt ( Bauhaus )

The Bauhaus poster is very simple, yet the sharp angles and various geometric forms are very
striking. Various parts on the poster almost seem like puzzle pieces forced to fit together. An
abstract placement of rectangular shapes, diagonal bars or words, and circular shapes are very well
used in this piece. Like the Neville Brodies poster Just bounce it where the different arrangement of
fonts and lettering is used. The uneven alignment with the Just bounce it lettering makes the text
seem active and playful as the letters are bouncing of the page compared to the Bauhaus which is
very much similar.

The diagonal tilt on the Bauhaus poster shows us to follow the rectangular shaped to see the
Bauhaus logo shown inside the circular shape. Then we are immediately able to read the word,
Bauhaus. Like the Just bounce it as we read the word bounce and you follow that word to find the
other vertical words.

I also like the use of colour in the Neville Brody poster advert as the hint of red colour in the (Just
Bouce it) poster makes the poster really pop from the page and would definitely get noticed. The
poster really works well leaving the rest of the page black and white as the contrast enhances the
effect of the different colour red. The Bauhaus poster emphasizes contrasts with the greens and
oranges but at the same time, these contrasts create a new texture to the poster which makes that
draw your attention towards it.

Another feature which is shown in the Nevilles piece is the way its collaged with its images together
with the text across the page to make the poster work. Rather than just using images to support the
text the image is supported by the text and mixed together.

Another feature with the Bauhause poster is when rotated in photoshop the diagonal tilt shows
emphasis from different angles compared the the vertical version above. Which shows us the grid
system on the image.
Neville brodys work could inspire my future work pieces. I really like the way he experimented with
the type and the way he uses and combines typography with images to show a creaive design. I like
the way he brings the font to life and creates the poster to be engaging. I also really like the way he
used the black and white combined with one bright feature colour the red.
