revolution with the mass production of glass containers beginning at the onset of the 20th century and
glass light bulb production automated in 1926. Nowadays glass is much less expensive and is (3)
for granted as a packaging material in addition to its use in windows and other applications. New
glass is (4) from a mixture of four main ingredients: sand, soda ash, limestone and other additives.
Glass can be (5) indefinitely as part of a simple but hugely beneficial process, as its structure does
not (6) when reprocessed. If recycled glass is used to(7) new bottles and jars, the energy (8) in
the furnace is greatly reduced. After accounting for the (9) and processing needed, 315kg of C02
is (10) per ton of glass melted.

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastics and reprocessing the material
into useful products, sometimes completely different in form from their original state. Typically a
plastic is not recycled into the same type of plastic, and products made from recycled plastics are
often not recyclable. When compared to other materials like glass and metal materials, plastic
polymers require greater processing to be recycled. Plastics have a low entropy of mixing, which is
due to the high molecular weight of their large polymer chains. When different types of plastics are
melted together they tend to phase-separate, like oil and water, and set in these layers.

Questions 31-10 refer to the following passage.
The most familiar speleothems (from the Greek word spelaion for the cave and thema for deposit), the
decorative dripstone features found in caves, are stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites hang
downward from the ceiling of the cave and are formed as drop after drop of water slowly trickles
through crack on the cave roof. Stalagmites grow upward from the floor of the cave, generally as a
result of water dripping from an overhead stalactite. A column forms when a stalactite and a
stalagmite grow until they join. A curtain or drapery begins to form on an inclined ceiling when
drops of water trickle along a slope.
Natural openings on the surface that lead to caves are called sinkholes. or swallow holes. Streams
sometimes disappear down these holes and flow through the cavern. Rivers may flow from one
mountain to another through a series of caves . Some caverns have sinkholes in their floors. Water
often builds up a rim of dripstone around the edge of the hole. Dripping water often contains
dissolved minerals as well as acid. These minerals too will be deposited; and they may give rich
coloring to the deposits. If minerals in the water change, layers of different colors may be formed.

know how to care for breeding animals and foals. The number of mares bred that actually conceive
varies from about 40 to 85 percent, with the average running less than 50 percent. Some mares that do
conceive fail to produce living foals. This means that, on average, two mares are kept a whole year to
produce one foal, and even then, some foals are disappointments from the standpoint of quality.
By careful selection, breeders throughout history have developed various kinds of horses with a wide
variety of characteristics to suit many different needs. The Great Horse of the Middle Ages, for
example was bred for size and strength to carry a heavily armored knight. The massive horses of such
breeds are often called cold blooded. The Arabs bred lithe dessert horses that were small and swift.
These animal are often referred to as hot blooded. Cross-breeding of hot blooded and cold-blooded
horses for certain characteristics produced breeds ranging from riding horses to draft horses.
The Thoroughbred id considered by many to be high point of elegance and fine selective breeding.

Questions 21-30 refer to the following passage.
We believe the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old. At percent we are forced to look to other bodies in
the solar system for hints as to what the early history of the Earth was like. Studies of our moon,
Mercury, Mars, and the large satelites of Jupiter and Saturn have provided ample evidence that all
these large celestial bodies had formed. This same bombardment must have affected Earth as well.
The lunar record indicates that the rate of impacts decreased to its present low level about 4 billion
years ago. On Earth, subsequent erosion and crustal motions have obliterated the craters that must
have formed during this epoch.
Scientists estimate the Earths age by measuring the ratios of various radioactive elements in rocks.
The oldest Earths rocks tested thus far are about 3 1/3 billion years old. But no one knows whether
these are oldest rocks on Earth. Tests on rocks form the moon and on meteorites show that these are
about 4.6 billion years old. Scientists believe that this is the true age of the solar system and probably
the true age of the Earth.
21. In line 8, the word obliterated means
(A) created
(B) destroyed
(C) changed
(D) eroded
Jawaban : (B) destroyed

Questions 23-28 are based on the following text.

Should Americans be Forced to Public Transportation?
By Jack Davis
First , let me define what the question is and isnt asking. It isnt asking if we should we all
abandon cars right now, nor is it asking if we should abandon them complety, nor is it asking if every
American should do so. It is asking wheater some Americans should have to take public transit some
of the time, and I would say yes.
Oil use and pollution aside, in some cities like Los Angeles and New York there just isnt
room for any more roads, so in order for large cities to grow, they need more people to take public
transit or risk permanent traffic jam. One bus can safely hold 40 people so even at half capacity thats
nearly 20 cars worth of space in traffic cleared up, and nearly 20 parking spaces that dont need to
built.
There are a lot of people that can take with transit little inconvenience but simply dont
because they never have in the past. If residents in areas with plenty of transit had to buy transit
passes as part of their property taxes then they would have little excuse not to bus occasionally. QA
number of universities already bundle a U-Pass with their tuition feeds, forcing their students to take
the bus. When given the change the majority of those students have voted to keep these programs.
A similar system in apartments where a portion of the tenants are not issued parking spaces
in exchange for a discount on their rent would also be community car to several apartment tenants that
arrange a schedule for the car, and this program gets many positive reviews.
So yes, I would say that Americans should be forced to use public transit, as Americans
whom are already forced to do so find that it works well for them.

Blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries like dark skinned bunch grape contain resveratrol, a

with Rutgers University New Jersey and Canada, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Resveratrol protects dark
skinned bunch grape from fungal diseases and provides health benefits to consumers, including
protection from cardiovascular disease. The compounds anticancer potential warranted its
examination in other fruits.
Using gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric procedures, the scientists measured the resveratrol
content of 30 whole fruit samples blueberry, cranberry, huckleberry, and related plants representing 5
families and 10 species Vaccinium fruit. They found that several samples contained varying amounts
of the compound. Analysis of extracts of the skin, juice/pulp, and seed of muscadine grapes showed

New Yorker and regularly had her book reviews appear in Constant Reader, a column in that
magazine.
In addition to her magazine work, she published volumes of poetry and short stories with the recurrent
themes of disappointment with life and the loss of idealism; these pessimistic themes, however, were
presented with biting wit. One of her most famous observations, Men seldom make passes/At girls
who wear glasses, came from the poem News Item, which was published in the volume Enough
Rope (1926). This volume of poetry was followed by the Sunset Gun (1928), Death and Taxes (1931),
and a collection of short stories, Here Lies (1939). Her book reviews were published in 1970 in a
volume entitled Constant Reader.

Questions 49 to 50
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is defined as the ratio of a persons mental age to chronological age, with
the ratio multiplied by 100 to remove the decimal. Chronological age is easily determined; mental age
is generally measured by some kind of standard test and is not so simple to define.
In theory, a standardized IQ t
est is set up to measure an individuals ability to perform intellectual operations such as reasoning and
problem solving. These intellectual operations are considered to represent intelligence.
In practice, it has been impossible to arrive at consensus as to which types of intellectual operations
demonstrate intelligence. Furthermore, it has been impossible to devise a test without cultural bias,
which is to say that any IQ tests so far proposed have been shown to reflect the culture of the test
markers. Test takers from that culture would, it follows, score higher on such a test than the takers
from a different culture with equal intelligence.
