Estimating Distance to Boundary (Lee, J.

Page 48)

The pressure history of a well located a certain distance L from a reservoir boundary such as a fault
can be simulated by adding the drawdown caused by the actual well acting as if it is in an infinite
reservoir with the drawdown of an image well located a distance 2L from the actual well and with
exactly the same rate history as the actual well as shown in Figure x (Lee, J. Page 48). For a well near
a boundary, producing at constant rate, equation x below applies

162.6 70.6 948 (2).2

= [ ( ) 3.23 + 0.869] + { [ ]}
2

The logarithm terms represent the actual well while the Ei terms represent the image well

The buildup equation can be simplified as

162.6 + 3792 2 3792 2

= { ( ) 0.434 [ ] + 0.434 ( )}
( + )

From equation x above, the straight line will be seen on the semi-log plot for middle time region but
the late time region will deviate upward from the straight line.

As demostrated by Lee in his book Pressure Transient Testing and as shown in Figure x above, the
difference between the measured BHP (Pws) during late time and the extrapolated midle time
staright line (PMT) represented as PL is shown in equation X below

70.6 3.792 2 3792 2 3792 2

= { ( ) + [ ] ( )}
( + )

Solving the equation by trial and error and when tp >> t, the equation reduces to

70.6 3.792 2
= { ( )}

Which simplifies to the equation x below after sufficient long time

= 0.01217
