ART LESSON PLAN

Lesson Title: Personal Still Life: Found Objects Speak Through Art
Art Class: Intro. to 2D Art & Design
Grade Level: high school
Suggested Time: 8 class periods

Description of Lesson: This lesson develops the concept that found objects tell stories and give
information about an individuals identity. Given a set of drawing skills and knowledge of composition as well
as the elements and principles of design, each student is challenged to draw a still life of objects that reflect
their identity. Various mini lessons will lead this lesson in order to ensure that students have the skills and
knowledge they need in order to create a successful work of art.

Power Standard:
PS#1 The student will demonstrate creative expression through appropriate media.

PS#2 The student will demonstrate technique through a variety of 2- and 3-D art.

PS#3 The student will demonstrate craftsmanship through the use of tools and materials.

PS#4 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the role of art throughout time.

PS#5 The student will demonstrate comprehension of art vocabulary.

PS#6 The student will demonstrate critique skills.

Daily Objectives:
1. After an introduction on the topic Art & Design, the student will demonstrate interpretation and
critique through identifying the two during a class discussion and quiz.
PS#5 The student will demonstrate comprehension of art vocabulary.

2. Given an introduction on the Still Life the student will demonstrate interpretation and
past/present through discussing how the still life communicates stories across time.
PS#4 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the role of art throughout time.

3. Given a demonstration on gesture, contour and blind contour drawing the student will
demonstrate media and form through practicing the techniques in their sketchbook.
PS#2 The student will demonstrate technique through a variety of 2- and 3-D art.

4. Given a review of drawing skills and composition the student will demonstrate media and form
through drawing a personal still life of objects which reflect their identity.
PS#1 The student will demonstrate creative expression through appropriate media.

PS#3 The student will demonstrate craftsmanship through the use of tools and materials.

5. After an introduction on critique the student will demonstrate reflective practice and critique
through critiquing their own and others work.
PS#6 The student will demonstrate critique skills.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Completion of postcard quiz
2. Participation in and successful completion of still life story during group activity
3. Completion of practice sketches in sketchbook
4. Successful completion of still life drawing which reflects the students identity through choice of objects
5. Participation in critique

Art Materials: Resources:
sketchbooks, pencil Art vs Design PP
9x12 paper Still life PP
colored pencil or graphite

Teaching Strategies & Notes:

* bring in objects asap (loose points if you use my objects unless its one that Ive
approved and you brought in the majority)
* (before presentation: split class into 6 groups and give them a number... tell
them that they will create a story to go with their coordinating numbered still
life in the presentation so they may want to write down discussion notes to use
later during the group activity)
* during still life presentation discuss identity
* provide bits of info. like Dali was a surrealist, Picasso a cubist, surrealism
uses imagery from the subconscious, photorealism looks like a photo but
is really a painting or drawing, etc. Then quiz students for a small prize at
the end.
* ask students to identify objects in the still lifes

Day by Day Activities:

Day 1. show art vs design PP as introduction to course and lesson


pre-draw set up still life while individuals are called to take postcard quiz
5 postcards are pinned to wall and numbered
on a piece of paper write whether the image is art or design and place in
coordinating cup
explain that still life is an art form that has told stories about society throughout
time
creating still lifes to reflect who we are as individuals - lets me get to know you
we will start with learning drawing techniques
must bring in objects next class
Day 2. split up class into groups of 6
show still life pp
group activity - write brief story about still life based on objects. be creative and
funny
Day 3. arrange objects into a still life
gesture drawing demo then practice
contour drawing demo then practice
blind contour drawing demo then practice
Day 4. arrange still life
warm up drawing
begin on final paper
Day 5 - 7. studio days beginning w/warm up
