Design of Machine Elements-II

Part- A (Answer all questions, 5x4=20 marks)

1 Explain conjugate action in gears. What are the ways by which interference is
avoided in gear drives?
2 What is involute pressure angle? Explain the various methods of gear production.
3 Specify any two applications where cycloidal profiles are used. Justify your
answer.
4 Explain with examples different types of lubrication in journal bearings.
5 What is multi- viscosity oil? Explain Stribecks curve.

Part- B (Answer any two questions, 3x15 =30 marks)

6 Suggest and design a suitable gear drive for a reciprocating pump-motor system.
The pump is running at 320 rpm and is driven by a 50 kW motor running at 2880
rpm.
7 Design a straight bevel gear drive to transmit 20 kW .The r.p.m of the pinion is
1400 and that of the gear is 350. The material for both pinion and gear is steel
with UTS 900 MPa . Also determine the shaft forces.
8 Design a worm gear drive for a speed reducer to transmit 37 kW. The minimum
efficiency expected is 85%. The velocity reduction required is 20.The worm
speed is 500 r.p.m.

Part A

1. Explain adiabatic steady flow ellipse.


2. Explain Mach cone, zone of action and zone of silence.
3. Discuss the performance characteristics of convergent-divergent nozzles..
4. Can shock waves develop in a subsonic flow? Justify your answer.
5. What is strength of a shock wave?

Part B
Module-I

6. (a) What is the effect of Mach number on compressibility? Prove for = 1.4.
(b) Find the net internal thrust produced by air entering a nozzle at a rate of 0.5 kg/s at a pressure
of 1.5 bar and temperature of 60o C and leaving at a pressure of 1 bar and a temperature of
35o C. Inlet area of nozzle is 0.02 m2 and exit area 0.002 m2 .
7. (a) Derive an expression for the acoustic velocity of a compressible fluid flow in terms of its
temperature.
(b) An air jet has a velocity temperature equal to twice its static temperature (T = 300 K); static
pressure is 2 bar. Determine
i. Mach number M and characteristic Mach number M of the jet
ii. Stagnation pressure and temperature
iii. Critical velocity of flow and sound.

Module-II

8. (a) Derive Rankine-Hugoniot relation for a normal shock.


(b) Determine the inlet and throat areas of a nozzle which is to discharge air ar 35 kP a, 4.5o C at
a Mach number of 2 through an exit area of 465 cm2 . The inlet velocity is 148 m/s. Assume
that the flow is isentropic and the ratio of specific heats is 1.4.
9. (a) Derive Prandtl-Meyer relation.
(b) A convergent divergent nozzle (A = 12 cm2 , Ae = 24 cm2 ) is operating at off design con-
ditions as it conducts air from a high-pressure tank (Po = 200 kP a, To = 40o C) to a large
container. A normal shock is present in the divergent part of the nozzle where area of the
cross section is 18 cm2 . Find the exit pressure and the loss in stagnation pressure during the
flow.

Part A
( Answer all questions. All questions carry 5 marks each )

1.Explain the principle of producing extreme cold by adiabatic demagnetization of a paramagnetic


salt.
2. What are the limitations of reversed Carnot cycle?
3. Show the simple vapour compression refrigeration cycle on P-h and T-s diagram and list the
processes in the cycle.
4.With the aid of a P-h diagram , list the effects of liquid subcooling on refrigerating effect, power
consumption and COP of the vapour compression cycle.
Part B
( Answer any 2 questions completely. All questions carry 15 marks each )

Module - I
5.a] Explain the working of Vortex tube refrigerator. (7 marks)
b] A Bell-Coleman refrigerator is required to produce 6 tonnes of refrigerating effect with a cooler
pressure of 11 bar and a refrigerated space at a pressure of 1.05 bar. The temperature of air leaving
the cooler is 38C and air leaving the refrigerated space is 16C. Calculate (i) mass of air circulated
per minute (ii) compressor displacement required per min (iii) expander displacement required per
minute ( iv) COP and (v) power required per TR. (8 marks)

6.a]Describe the working of any 2 air cycle system for aircraft refrigeration (8 marks)

b]An air cycle unit operating on the simple system is designed for the following conditions :
7.5 kg/min of conditioned air, air entering the turbine at 4.4 bar, cabin pressure 1 bar, dry air rated
discharge temperature of -6C and a turbine efficiency of 80%. (i) At what temperature does the
air enter the turbine? (ii) How much power does the turbine supply to the fan. (7 marks)

Module II
7.a]Discuss the effect of condenser pressure and evaporator pressure on the COP of the vapour
compression refrigeration cycle (8 marks)

b] An ammonia refrigeration plant operates between a condensing temperature of 40C and an


evaporating temperature of -10C. The vapour is dry at the end of compression. Calculate the COP
of the cycle (7 marks)
OR
8.a]Explain Ewings construction for determining the suction state for maximum COP (7 marks)

b]A simple saturation cycle using Freon 22 is designed for a load of 100TR. The saturated suction
and discharge temperatures are 5C and 40C respectively. Calculate (i) The mass flow rate of
refrigerant (ii) The COP and isentropic horse power (iii) The heat rejected in the condenser. (8 marks)

A Retired person wants to invest up to an amount of Rs.30,000 in fixed income securities.
His broker recommends investing in two Bonds: Bond A yielding 7% and Bond B
yielding 10%. After some consideration, he decides to invest at most of Rs.12,000 in
bond B and at least Rs.6,000 in Bond A. He also wants the amount invested in Bond A to
be at least equal to the amount invested in Bond B. What should the broker recommend if
the investor wants to maximize his return on investment?
The Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, (short names:
GEC, GECB, GECBH)), was founded by the government of Kerala, India, in August
1999. The institution is located in Barton Hill, which is two kilometres from the city
centre in Trivandrum. The institute has five major departments: Mechanical
Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil
Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering.
