CYCLE TEST I
Subject Name : Heat and Mass Transfer Class: III Year / V Sem, B.E., MECH-A & B Sec
Date : 14.07.2015 Marks : 20
Answer ALL Questions
(Use of Heat and Mass Transfer Tables permitted)
Part A (5x2=10)
1. State Fouriers law of heat conduction.
2. Define the term conductivity. Also list the behaviour of metal, liquid, gases in terms of thermal
conductivity for increase in temperature.
3. What are the three modes of heat transfer?
4. Calculate the critical radius of insulation for asbestos (k=0.172 W/mK) surrounding a pipe and
exposed to room air at 300K with h=2.8 W/m2C
5. Give the application area of heat transfer.
Part B (1x10=10)
6. a. Write short notes on mechanism of heat conduction in different phases of a substance.
b. A furnace wall consists of three layers. The inner layer of 10cm thickness is made of fire brick
(k=1.04 W/m2K).The intermediate layer of 25cm thickness is made of Masonry brick (k=0.69
W/m2K) followed by a 5 cm thick concrete wall (k=1.37 W/m2K).When the furnace is in
continuous operation, the inner surface of the furnace is at 900C while the outer concrete surface
is at 40 C.Calculate the rate of heat loss per unit area of the wall, the temperature at the interface
of the fire brick and masonry brick and the temperature at the interface of the masonry brick and
concrete.
c.A steel tube with 5 cm ID,7.6 cm OD and k=15 W/mC is covered with an insulative covering of
thickness 2 cm and k=0.2 W/mC.A hot gas at 330C with h=400 W/m2C flows inside the
tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed o cooler air at 30C with h=60 W/m2C.
Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for 10m of the tube and the temperature
drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel tube, the insulation
layer and the outside air.
