topics. Students of lower grades will demonstrate comprehension of the material presented to them
in the PowerPoint or newsletter created by upper grade students by passing a quiz on the material
with a 70% or better.

Technology Resources Computer with Internet access, Digital projector or other presentation device,
Needed: presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, desktop publishing software such
as Microsoft Word, printer
Background/Preparation: Research copyright laws regarding educational projects (resource list attached). School
system policy manual documents referring to technology will be needed. Students should
have working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Word.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Seventh and eighth grade students will receive the Computer Lab Rules and Technology Ethics Concept Outline
(attached) to review the material. The sample PowerPoint (attached) should be shown.
2.)Divide students into groups of 2 or 3 to create either newsletters or presentations. (Teacher might elect to assign
newsletters to the seventh graders and presentations to the eighth graders.) Students then choose to create either a
PowerPoint presentation or newsletter (sample template attached) that can be used to educate incoming sixth grade
students and parents.
3.)Students will receive copies of the project scoring guide so they can meet the requirements of the PowerPoint or
Newsletter project.
5.)When sixth grade students (or students new to the school) are introduced to the lab, the instructor or media specialist
should conduct a brief tour of the classroom (location of supplies, pencil sharpener, place to store books and personal
items, etc.).
6.)As part of the sixth grade (or parent night) orientation, the instructor shows the PowerPoint presentation, discussing
the rules and ethics for technology use. Time is permitted for discussion, questions, and answers.
7.)In order to use the computers, sixth graders and all new students must pass, with a requirement of 70% proficiency,
the quiz (attached) for final assessment of knowledge of topics covered in this lesson.
8.)Students may review the material and retake the quiz as many times as necessary until they pass.
9.)Newsletters can be used by students who need to review the material before retaking the test, to instruct new
students or absentees who missed the orientation, or to instruct parents.
