salt water, a symbolic gesture of

Then, during Nyepi, the island will
be so peaceful and quiet for 24 hours
as the Balinese do the Catur Brata
Penyepian or the four abstinences
that comprise amati geni (abstaining
from lighting any re or light), amati

and cleanse their minds to face the
challenges in the coming year.

The last part of the show is
Ngembak Geni that falls on the
day after Nyepi. The island is alive

the animals actually came from. To
overcome the catastrophe and to
avoid it in the future the elders
believe that Omed-Omedan ritual
must be held. Ever since then, the
ritual is hosted every year.
Thats why, Omed-Omedan and
other Balinese rituals, for that matter
- must be preserved as a precious
heritage of Balinese ancestors. It
brings Balinese people together to
enjoy togetherness and at the same
time to pay respect to their age-old
traditions.

NESTLED ACROSS A RICE FIELD IN BANJAR KULUH SAYAN IN UBUD,
MOKSA IS THE NEW HAVEN FOR HEALTHY DELIGHTS

I
t has only been a year and a
half since Moksa Plant-Based
Restaurant & Permaculture
Garden opened its doors, yet
the restaurant has become one
of the top ve Ubud destinations
on TripAdvisor. And among all the
vegan restaurants that are booming
in Ubud, Moksa still has the element
of surprise. The location is quite
hidden, but the restaurant is not
that difcult to nd. Guests coming
from Denpasar will need to look for
Puskesmas II Ubud signage on the
right side of the road after passing
the Sayan Market. Turn right on
that signage, follow the road and
veer to the right where a school
and a clinic stand. Then, follow
the road and make a right turn or
simply park the car near the clinic
and walk to the restaurant. On my
visit to the restaurant together with
a friend, I prefer the latter as it was
really refreshing to walk by the rice
eld. And as soon as I arrived at the
restaurant, I could see why Moksa
has become a favorite among
Ubudians and tourists alike.
GREEN BOOSTERS
Moksa is born from a collaboration
between Mr. Made Janur Yasa and
Chef Made Runatha, both of whom
have worked together at a retreat in
Ubud that focuses on the balance of
body, mind and soul and serves raw
food. Then we thought, why cant
we build one ourselves? stated Mr.
Yasa as my friend and I took a seat
at their alfresco restaurant designed
with wooden oor and furniture.
We thought, as local Balinese,
we have to dare to dream big. We
considered all the points that make
us happy. Our business should
involve community, sustainability,
sharing a recycling concept and
quality.
Those are the basic ideas that
shaped Moksa to what it is today.
We offer plant-based food. We
also have a permaculture garden
where we grow as many plants as
we can. We use these plants as
our ingredients and serve them to
our guests, Mr. Janur Yasa added.
But there are some parts of the
plant that we cant use for food,
like the stems or the roots. We dont
put them to waste. We use them to
make compost for our garden. So,
our concept is from farm to table

and back to farm again.
Mr. Yasa then helped us with
our order we decided to start our
culinary journey with refreshing
juices. Moksa has a lot of healthy
concoctions, from fresh juices
to pharmacy shots and jamu to
mocktails, and each one offers a
different benet to our health. I opted
for the Anti-Oxidant Booster made
of pineapple, apple, alfalfa sprouts,
kale and wheat grass, while my friend
ordered the Flu Fighter & Immunity
Booster that contains tangerine,
carrot, spinach, apple and celery.
When our drinks were served,
we had a little bit of doubt as the
juices had a bold green color. But
one sip of the juice, then our doubts
went out of the window as the juices
tasted nothing like vegetables the
pineapple and apple gave a kick to
the Anti-Oxidant Booster while the
tangerine and apple gave a tangy
avor to the Flu Fighter & Immunity
Booster. And with a view of the
restaurants permaculture garden, I
think were off to a good start!
THE FOOD STORY
Created by Chef Made Runatha,
who spent years in the USA to learn
all about raw food and unbaked
desserts and is claimed to be the
worlds rst Indonesian plant-based
cuisine chef, each Moksas dish has
its own story with elements that are
made from scratch. We want to
present dishes that are not just tasty
and fullling but also nutritious,
stated Chef Made when he went to
our table.
Our rst dish was The Humus for
appetizer. Served with Kalamata
olives, avocado-corn salsa and baby
tomato salad, the zucchini humus

has a bold savory avor due to a
pinch of Kusamba traditional sea salt
and a twist of sweetness from slices
of dragon fruit.
The Jack Fruit Taco is also a
unique starter. The young jack
fruit replaces meat, and is served
together with red onions and bell
peppers as well as oregano, tomato
salsa, green salad and coconut
sour cream. But what makes this
dish stand out is the taco shells.
Moksa creates them from scratch
with blended corn that is dried for
about six hours, then shaped into
taco shells. And the tacos still have
a twist of spicy avor with a slice of
jalapeno on top. Another appetizer
worth a try is the Coconut Mushroom
that is rich with avor as three kinds
of mushrooms are cooked with
galangal, carrot, baby tomatoes and
lemongrass coconut milk.

 Moksas main courses are just
as interesting with the Tempeh Ribs
as one of the stars of the menu.
The tempeh are cut in big sizes
and marinated with homemade
barbeque sauce before they are
grilled to perfection. This dish is even
more fullling with mashed sweet
potatoes, mixed greens and grilled
tomato on the side. The Chefs
Bowl is another surprise. The dish
is rich with avor as the curry rice,
tofu, mixed greens and mushrooms
are perfectly blend with eggplant
rendang, kimchi and thinly sliced
tempeh resembling bacon.
The Farmers Triple Decker is
also a unique choice as it presents
Moksas interpretation of simple club
sandwich. Using similar methods to
making their taco shells, Moksa dries
carrot dregs which they collect from
carrot juice for about six hours and
turn them into bread with a soft

Still, we had some room for
dessert. The Sweet Symphony was

journey, comprised of a lemon pie,

a mango tart, a jack berry cake
and a chocolate coffee ice cream.
Each component in their dessert is
also homemade using natural sweets
like honey and palm nectar without
any use of dairy products, our, or

GROW THE GARDEN

After having an excellent culinary
journey, we took a tour around the
restaurant. Moksa has two gardens,

the rst one is on the same level
with the dining venue, while the
other one sits below the alfresco
restaurant, making wonderful
scenery to look at.
Below this oor, Mr. Janur Yasa
stomped on the restaurants wooden
oor, is a water catchment. It collects
rain water that ows to the restroom
to ush the toilet. He then guided us
to the garden next to the restaurant
where another water catchment stood
to recycle water from the restroom.
All the plants in this garden lean on
this recycled water.
Next to the second water
catchment was a big box where the
team make their own compost for
the plants. A construction project is
also underway at the garden. We
are building a multi-purpose building
for a yoga class and cooking class,
explained Mr. Janur Yasa as he
led us to the next garden below the
restaurant; the permaculture garden.

Clearly, Moksa leaves almost
nothing to waste. The restaurant is
not just a place to indulge in some
homemade plant-based dishes, but
also a simple getaway to ease our

FF: I had a neck injury in early 1987
and was told to have surgery.I
was given anti-inammatory drugs
which totally upset my digestive

took me to a chiropractor, and my

massage.As a result, I became
interested in massage, and after over
20 years of teaching high school
math, I decided to go to a massage
school.

also decided to learn about

glad that I got the chance to learn

BB: Can you tell us more about the

Rainbow Healing System that you
invented?
FF: The Rainbow Healing System
is a way to maintain stable and
balanced energy as you evolve
into your authentic self the being
that you were created to be. I also
invented it with Rainbow Healing
Cards, which can be played.
This new tool can assist clients in
understanding themselves and
others, and help them create more
harmonious relationships with others.
I also help them to use these cards
to support them on their evolutionary
journey or for daily inspiration.
BB: Do you work a lot with the locals
in your foundation?
Essential oils have been the
main key in Frances life.
The Fuller Life Bali foundation.
FF: Yes, I hired around 50 Balinese
to take care of and manage this
foundation. I am happy to work
with them; they are people with
dedication and I trust them to run
this place every day. Here, we
offer not only essential oil therapy
but also all wellness treatments,
from live blood analysis and colon
hydrotherapy to biomedical devices
for balance. We also offer postural
analysis, raindrop technique, Reiki,
Rainbow Healing sessions, full body
massages, detoxication services
including colonics, facials and foot
reexology, as well as cooking
workshops and organic gardening.
BB: How do you deal with stress
from working under pressure?
FF: I always use the Stress Away
from Young Living essential oil
to soothe myself whenever I feel
depressed or stressed. I usually
apply it on my neck and breathe in
the aroma for six to eight seconds.
After overcoming my stress, I usually
use the Believe essential oil, also
from Young Living, to bring back my
condence whenever I feel like I am
losing it.
BB: How do you personally feel after
using essential oils for more than 14
years now?
FF: Young Living essential oils have
changed my life tremendously. At
this age, I can still do a lot of things.
Essential oils have been the main
key in my daily life. As a Royal

have regularly shared my experience
to other users. After years of
using essential oils, I now travel
throughout Asia to share the benets
of Young Living products and focus
upon expanding the wellness and
education center that I founded, the

ME TIME
The rst time I set my foot on the
resort, I was greeted by the gentle
waves of tall coconut trees on my
right and left side. I took a little walk
along the path in front of the resorts
cottages while enjoying the peaceful
sea breeze to go straight to The
Beach Spa.

Spa is designed in a bale-bale
concept widely known as beach
huts. There are no walls nor air
conditioning so guests have the
ultimate pampering moment in the
midst of nature. I was totally calmed
already as I listened to the sound
of the waves while breathing in the
positive vibe of the area.
Before my treatment started, Ibu

Tirta, the manager of the spa who
has been working for more than 10
years at The Beach Spa, welcomed
me. She handed me a list of a paper
with questions to answer about the
condition of my body based on my
own understanding, as well as the
type of my skin and my hair, and
even how I deal with my workload.
Once I nished answering all the
questions, Ibu Tirta analyzed it
and suggested I take the Ayurveda
treatment. She also explained about
the core points that needed to be

focused on during my treatment.
Without further ado, Ibu Tirta took
me to one of the bales. A therapist
was already there, ready to wash my
feet with warm water infused with mint
essential oil. And so, my pampering
journey began and I could feel my
nerves cool down during the footbath.
The aroma of mild herbs fragrance
also helped me even more relax
each minute. We use high-quality
organic essential oils, ranging from
peppermint, citrus, candlenut and
clove, my therapist explained.
After the footbath, my therapist
asked me to lie down on the bed,
facing down. Then, the Ayurveda
massage treatment began as she
applied deep oil nourishment on
my back and started to give on-
point pressures. Ayurveda massage
uses heated oil and I believed her
massage technique helped my skin
to absorb the natural benets with

each drop of oil. And eventually I
went to a deeper relaxation as she
pampered me from head to toe.
I did not realize that 90 minutes
had passed when my therapist called
me gently. When I opened my eyes,
my muscles were all soothed and
my mind was eased. The Ayurveda

MENJANGAN HIDEAWAY
A PARADISE WITHIN A PROTECTED WILDERNESS
ON THE WESTERN TIP OF BALI

S
itting within the West
Bali National Park on
the northwestern tip
of the island, Plataran
Menjangan Resort &
Spa is truly a remarkable sanctuary
to escape from crowded South Bali
for a while and be one with nature.
Not only does it boast a view of
the ocean and the silhouette of the
mountains in Java Island, the resort
also often welcomes regular visitors
in their green spaces; the menjangan
or the deer that live in the national
park.
It takes around three hours to get
to the resort from South Bali, but
the long journey is worth it with the
view of Balis beautiful landscapes
to please the eyes. On my way
to visit the resort with a couple of
friends, our journey was even more
unforgettable as we made a short
stop at The View Restaurant by
Plataran in Munduk area (just after
Bedugul) to ll up our energy with
its delectable Indonesian dishes
while gazing at the lush greenery.
Afterwards, we continued on to
Plataran Menjangan Resort & Spa
where natural wonders awaited us
THE JOGLO HOUSE
After three hours on the road, the
resorts shuttle car nally took a turn
to what seemed to be a hidden path
as it went through a forest. Not long
after, we arrived at the resorts lobby
that is set in a house-like building

designed with wooden oor, and
boasts an ocean view. Walking
into the lobby felt like entering a
relatives house as it had a homey
vibe. While the staff helped us
with our check in, my friends and
I explored the wooden deck at the
back of the lobby where a telescope
is provided to watch Menjangan
Island that lies across the ocean.
As much as we wanted to hang
out at the lobby deck, our rooms
were already waiting. Plataran
Menjangan Resort & Spa has
several villas, each one is made of
a traditional Javanese Joglo house
and decorated with wooden oor
and furniture. These types of the
villas are comprised of one-bedroom
Forest Villa, Luxury Ocean Villa,
Ocean Mangrove Villa and the
two-bedroom Forest Villa. I stayed
at the one-bedroom Luxury Ocean
Villa designed with a private terrace
and a plunge pool overlooking the

dining venues, one of them being the
Wantilan Open Kitchen. Located next
to the lobby, the alfresco Wantilan
Open Kitchen serves delicious
Indonesian dishes where our group
indulged in a dinner with a romantic
ambiance under the night sky.

 INTO THE WILDERNESS
The next morning, it was time for an
adventure. Our day began with a
full breakfast at The Octagon Ocean
Club before we headed to the dock
to hop on the Plataran Private Cruise
to go snorkeling around Menjangan
Island. The sun was shining bright
and the ocean was pretty friendly.
Soft drinks, mineral water and
canaps were served on the Phinisi
boat, while several daybeds were
available for us to lie under the sun.
Cruising couldnt be better than this!

It wasnt long until we reached our
destination, but before we left the
private cruise, the captain gave a
brieng and made sure that each
of us wore life jackets. Then, we
hopped on to a smaller boat to get
to the snorkeling spot and nally
jumped into the crystal clear ocean
and swam to see Menjangans
beautiful marine life.

light bites. And who knows, some
of the wild deer might just come to The Octagon Beach Club.

Thomas is a regular traveler to Indonesia,
especially to the Island of the Gods.
His photographic journey started with
lm cameras and a home darkroom in
his youth. He subsequently enjoyed a
corporate career that took him to travel
the world extensively but at the same time
limited his photographic pursuits.

After retiring in 2014, Mark has been

engine like a madman and went through all the foliage
like a walk in the park. Then, you wondered, What
kind of machine is that?
Its a buggy car. And now its broken away from
your TV screen and is literally available in Bali.

utilize this unique vehicle to patrol the desert and the
borders or the jungle. At Mason Jungle Buggies, the
chosen rides are at the cream level, utilizing Polaris
Ace 325 cc as the single seater and Polaris RZR with
570 cc for the double seater.
These buggies are more than just reliable and
safe. We adjust the wheelbase to get a lower center
of gravity so people can go crazy without ipping
over. We also added a horn to let other drivers know
that you are overtaking, stated Jian Mason, one
of the experts behind the business. Obviously some
parts have been modied for the sake of fun without
forgetting the safety components, like the staggering

factory built roll bar to protect drivers and passenger.
The 28 buggies that consists of 20 single seaters
and 8 doubles are on standby in the basement park
under the Koko Bambu restaurant. The restaurant also
functions as the starting and nishing point for this
activity so riders can clean themselves up and ll their
hungry stomachs with some quality food after their
driving session is done.

THE TRACK
Mason Jungle Buggies is located at Banjar Tagtag in
Ubud where lush greenery becomes the feast to the
riders eyes. The buggy ride is 4.5 kilometers long that
runs through from a village road to the forest and then to
the custom built road.

other ATV operators is that other operators use the village
road which is often blocked on special days for traditional
ceremonies. This is not the case with Mason Jungle
Buggies as they created their own track through the forest.
My father and I actually dug it all by ourselves using
bobcats. We also walked through the forest to decide
what features need to be added, Jian explained how they
built the customized track, including the safety points.
The road is mostly soil with some layers of gravel
added on the big turning section to give riders a
sensational drifting experience once they give a deep
revving thrust and splash dirt around. This is the ultimate
driving experience that also tests your driving skills.
THE RIDE
Before the ride starts, the ve- to seven-minute safety
brieng is the rule of thumb that should not be neglected.
Riders are taken to the neat well-managed garage where
those 28 buggies are waiting. The rules are displayed
on a at LCD screen; the information includes how to
handle the ride, what needs to be considered along the
road and what should not be done during the ride.
After all is clear, each rider wears a helmet and their
three point seatbelts are fastened. Then, theres nothing
else left than to hit the ignition button and the gas pedal.
Surprisingly, the buggies are not blaring as loud as I
thought they would be. The sound of the engine was
more of a medium roar, resembling a prowling predator.
The petrol-fueled engine gave a good thrust as soon
as I hit the gas pedal on full throttle. The ride was super
fun as I went through the dense tropical forest, waved to
the local villagers, and saw an old man feeding his cows
while roosters were roaming around the road. But the
most fun was when I spin the wheel and drifted on soft
gravel, blasting dirt to the buggy behind me.

A SUSTAINABLE HOLIDAY IN WEST SUMBAWA

t was 11 p.m. and the light went
off. The electricity supply for the
day was nished and we were
ready to go to bed. It had been
a long day of exploring and
identifying dive sites around the
Eight Islands with base camp at the
Earthships in Kenawa Island. Located
just a 15-minute boat ride away from
Poto Tano district, Kenawa Island
is spread over 13.8 hectares of
unspoiled tropical beauty in Gili Balu
district in West Sumbawa.
The seven of us were all
passionate volunteer divers who,
on behalf of Eco Regions Indonesia
(ERI), were on a task to document
the potential of this area as a
diving destination and test the
newly built Earthships. There were
two prototypes built by sustainable
architect Mike Reynolds and his
team during workshops held in
December 2016 and March 2017.
This project is a part of The Eight
Islands Eco Region, a comprehensive

sustainable development venture
situated in the Poto Tano district,
where the West Sumbawa Regency
has allocated an area of 1,000
hectares as an Eco Region suitable
for the development of both eco-
tourism and agro-industry. The
regency has nominated ERI as the
conservation, rehabilitation and
development governing body for the
area, with responsibility to produce
sustainable development rules and
guidelines for development in the Eco
Region, prohibiting non-sustainable
practices. This platform combines
environmental, cultural, social,
spiritual and nancial needs in
equal balance, and is set to create
Southeast Asias largest Eco Region.

Different adaptations of this self-
sufcient building have been built
worldwide; some becoming private
residences, some ofces, while others
holiday houses. Some Earthsips have
even been adopted within relief
programs for homeless people.
Due to its unique and diverse
design, an Earthship building
requires a wide use of recycled
materials such as glass and plastic
bottles, as well as cans and tires.
And because of that, the Earthship
has become many peoples dream
home, mainly for its self-sufciency
in energy production which allows
it to be completely off the grid.
Indeed, the Earthship has been
dened as a living organism
because it interacts with the
surrounding environment as if it is a
living being, adapting to the needs
of who lives in it and to climatic
conditions.
The mass created by old tires
stuffed with soil isolates the building,
so do the empty plastic and glass
bottles which are also used for
decoration. Water is collected for
human use and being recycled
to irrigate the garden. Energy is
produced by solar panels and a
so-called breeze-maker system on
the roof that cools down hot air from
the outside and turns it into a natural
air ow that freshens the indoor
areas. In Eight Islands, the Earthship
team is collaborating with ERI for
the establishment of Southeast Asias
rst Earthship branded resort and
Earthship Academy.

To us, the seven divers and
temporary dwellers, the Earthship
has provided sufcient fresh water
to wash off salt and dirt, enough
electricity to charge our phones,
camera batteries and laptops, and
light until after dinner. We had
to use a generator to fuel the air
compressor used to ll the tanks, but
no additional cooling system such as
fans or air-conditioning devices was
needed to keep us fresh during the

solar, has its own gravity-based water
collection system and septic tank.
The Earthship needs less energy than
a conventional building. It needs less
solar panels and no air-conditioning.

you with what you need but does not

that anymore because everything

people outside of their little world
to see the whole picture, and make
them ponder; do I really need to
waste water and power? To throw
my garbage out and let my sewage
go into the sea? Slowly, they start to
see how crucial their participation
in this planet is and it makes them
stronger as a community, Reynolds
concluded.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot
more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
