First, because understanding such a thing requires a adding what is lacking in positive, removing what is in
deep knowledge of oneself. The difficulty stems from the excess and in negative.
The only path of healing or growth is the natural pathway. In Oriental medicine, in the analysis of the five
elements are described a thousand ways that something goes wrong, but only one way that it's going
well. This cycle is called "creative cycle"; All others, overflowing, destructive, defective and so on are
perfidious and unbalancing relations of Chi. The only way for something to go well is that it follows its
own nature, and the nature of things is to grow and manifest through its fruits. It turns out that
although we are somewhat more complicated than an apple tree, this reduction to the absurd of the
sense of life resists all brainy criticism.
Happiness, beyond that slobbering idea that the current culture embodies, is simply to take
everything we carry inside and fulfill our most positive destiny; in such work and this is the great
paradox, we always come to give the world what we do not have, and in this way we fulfill our dream.
The immense power of the way of consciousness transcends ideologies, cycles, fashions and
times. On the road to the awareness of being, we discover the tools we need to reach our goals. It is
almost like one of those video games, in which the protagonist goes in each level gaining weapons or
abilities that allow him to fight in the following phase. Life always puts us in front of what we need to
keep growing, even when such situations may seem incomprehensible to us.
We have all gone through destructive cycles, times when the compass did not find the North; times of
restlessness, pain or confusion. It is natural that this is so; even the most seasoned of the Warriors knows
the taste of defeat. What sets him apart from the common man is that he does not conform or resign
himself; he gathers his forces, heals his wounds and returns to combat, but with the lesson well learned.
To persist in error, to cultivate nonsense, to live in a continuous escape, will never soothe our deep wound,
whatever it may be; rather, it will do it by looking at it without resentment, face to face, so as to take away
its power over us, with the greed of one who loves life intensely, with the power of the one who knows
his best destiny. Empty and without power, our internal enemy will fall thus defeated, without
acrimony or drama, and everything in the outside world will be adapt to such a change,
surrendering without conditions to whom so takes over his destiny.
In order to be able to tread this land with our head high in pursuit of our greatest
design, discipline (no matter how bad a press it may have in these days when the
masculine or authority principle is being so mistreated) is an achievement and an
irreplaceable tool, and perhaps for this reason, today more than ever, the martial
ways, or any other that involves body, emotion and mind in a single act of presence
in the here and now, are an irreplaceable treasure.
Fleeing maneuvers are always useless, because in this paradoxical world, that
of which we try to get away is just what we find. No matter where you go, the one
who goes there is always you! And your virtues and your miseries travel with you
in your backpack. In addition, every escape routine generates a loss of personal
power; all sustained effort in the right direction increases our personal power.
Without the strength of discipline, we will not be able to achieve our dreams;
for this, in the way of the Warrior is well-known the slogan "without personal
power nothing is possible", and the road of growth requires a lot of
sustained effort. On the contrary, in order to follow the involutive path,
always destructive and therefore sterile, all you have to do is let yourself
go and slip along the slide of your facilities, fears and wants and
identify with them.
As in the case of energy in the cycle of the five elements, the
direction of growth is only one and always the same, for All and for
Everything: Forward, upward, inward and finally, towards the Whole.
There is no satisfaction or fullness similar to following the natural
path; that is the prize, a constant gratification, temperate, deep and
intense that can accompany us every day, more and more frequently
and throughout a full and fruitful life.
When the omnipotent fantasies of your most youthful, rebellious and
conspicuous side urge you to question your path with heart or the reasons
for your discipline, remember! Connect with that powerful sensation, that
space in which tranquility is the prize, in which the stillness is pleasant, in which the
nuclear Self looks from its center as the images of change march before him, without
judgments, without pain, serenely... finally, in the verses of the poet:

"And in the twilight ... tired and aching the body,

replete and tempered the soul, surrender in the arms of the night."
Shaolin Temple

When we try to rummage through the ancient texts of the Shaolin

temple about Luohan Shi Ba Shou we find that they date back to the time
of Bodhidharma (Damo), who was the father and founder of Chan
Buddhism or Zen. It is said that after having created Yi Jin Jing (treatise
on muscles and tendons) and Xi Sui Jing (chi kung of marrow washing),
he developed a series of movements which were referred to as Luohan
Shi Ba Shou, or the 18 hands of Luohan, which would shape the first
movements of Shaolin Kung Fu. Although this story is not corroborated
to a hundred percent, according to the Shaolin Quan Pu (), one of
the oldest Shaolin books, in the distant Sui Dynasty, the Shaolin warrior
monks developed a series of movements for the meditating monks. The
movements were very simple and were chosen according to the 18
statues of Luohan, hence the name of Luohan Shi Ba Shou (18 hands of
Luohan). Both stories, though distant in time, coincide in that the
exercises were created for the meditating monks so they could exercise
and learn to defend themselves.

from time to time there, in Madrid or La Corua. We all, or almost all know
that trying to interfere in the intimate relationships of others, is not only "not
advisable", but also you can end up bearing the main brunt.
Being aware of such a certain affirmation, I had tried to give some warnings
or suggestions to both of them with the good purpose of helping them
recover that illusion and feelings that one day had been born to unite them in
some way. Then, when I was almost certain that there was nothing to be done
and one of the parties "was very clear and completely sure of what was
doing," I decided to stay out of it. We could all have remained friends, but it
was also very clear, at least to me, that the one who would remain my friend

... would be him and not her, who had actually been in my
life because of my relationship with him, and not for herself.
Rubn knew that I was going to spend my summer
holidays in the Canary Isles, and more concretely in Tenerife
South, where I had previously lived for about 6 years. Then
he asked me if he could come with me to the island. He
needed to escape, go away, live new experiences and try to
forget the bitter moments he had lived in his city, Saragossa.
And that's how in the first few days on the beautiful island,
we celebrated the birthday of a friend, Vanesita Linda (on
August 15, 2010) in Santa Cruz, in the north of Tenerife, and
the next day my own birthday, on August 16th.
We also share with my friend Jaime Falero, actor and film
director of action.
The days had been passing among sunbaths, sea,
mountains, trips and various celebrations with friends,
fantastic people I had met in my previous years of residence
in Tenerife. So, on that day, I had decided to take him to the
famous Teide Volcano, which is part of the Teide National
Park, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, on June

28, 2007, in Christchurch (New Zealand). It is also a natural

protected area in the category of Natural Monument that
encloses the volcanic complex Teide-Pico Viejo, a large
stratovolcano of the vesubian type that still remains active in
the wake of historical eruptions occurred not too long ago
(the last one, the one of Narices del Teide, in 1798) and the
fumaroles it regularly emits from its crater.
The point is that we were talking animatedly about our
things while admiring the natural beauty of the road.
Suddenly, a brown dog just skin and bones arose running
out of the volcanic rocks. The animal stepped onto the road,
gazing with joy at our car. It was something completely
unexpected, but fortunately I managed to avoid running him
over, while I tried to maintain the thread of the conversation
with my friend. We continued along the road. My friend was
most excited about his subject and, not wanting to interrupt
him, I kept driving while I looked back through the rearview
mirror and the side mirrors. The beats of my heart forced me
to slow down, while still trying to visualize that desperate
little dog on the road.
At a given moment, I made up my mind to interrupt his
talking by asking him if he hadn't seen what I had seen.
- What? - He asked me.
- That little dog that suddenly appeared from the lava and
got into the road - I answered.
Somehow upset, he said:
- Well, yeah, I think I saw a dog that was out there, but I
didn't pay much attention.
Fu Shih Kenpo

Deeply worried inside me, I told him:

- We should go back and get him. It's clear that some cruel
soulless has abandoned him in this arid desert. That poor
animal was very thin. And on hearing our car ran to meet us in
the hope of receiving our help.
- And what do we do with him? - My friend told me.
- Well, right now I don't know, but at least we can pick him
up and take him to a reception center. I cannot take him to
Madrid - I said - because I'm always traveling and I wouldn't
be able to take care of him properly.
So we kept going down the road. I didn't see him again
through the mirrors of the car. But it's also true that in the
following hours I couldn't concentrate on anything other than
feeling a deep pain and remorse for not having assisted the
poor dog.
Two and a half years have passed since then, and I often
remember that "tender image of a desperate poor dog lost in
the middle of the road, with his luminous eyes calling for help,
while expressing the joy of seeing our car." I have told this
passage of my life on several occasions. I've prayed for him, I
have begged him and God to forgive me for my stupid reaction
and conjectures; for not having stopped and caressed him
inviting him to get into our car; for not having given him water,
food and protection. Sometimes I've even cried, because the
image of that day will never be erased from my mind and my

Heihouu... The alteration point

Since we began this new phase of our work in Europe, many doubts about terms and
techniques have come to us, providing us with a better opportunity to explain ourselves.
This week, the doubt comes from a Kenjutsu teacher in Hungary, who studied Bujutsu.
His question is whether the correct nomenclature in the application of "Sotto Heihou" is
Sotto or "Sottoo".
Initially, there are two possibilities that can establish this doubt "ad infinitum":
Sottoo (extending the sound "O" at the end of the word) - means fainting.
Sotto - It means silently, secretly.

The Sotto no Heihou technique, applied within the Kenjutsu, which means the use of
the Wakizashi, or Tanto, by means of a distraction after an attack with the Katana, can
only refer to a hidden, concealed form of attack. Logically, Sotto is the correct form of
sound and nomenclature of this form of Heihou.
In the past, Masters referred to this type of form as "SenKon" - "The Soul of War".
Viewed in depth, it is the moment in which this term is explained in the overcoming of
the death before the enemy. The mind that overcomes danger and seeks in it the
opportunity. In this case, in this unique moment you cannot depend on impermanence.
We do not know when and where this impermanent life will end. This body is already
beyond our control. Life, at the mercy of time, moves without stopping for a single
Mushin! The combat that is established by itself!... The interior that manifests itself
silently. For scholars, a Heihou is done because it's premeditated, but it's not a way that

that makes of the intention the point of attachment, is already seduced. Some also claim
that it would be best to use this form without a pre-anticipation, through the wrapping

movements that confused Uke's coordination, causing

him to lose himself throughout his movement.

Let's see:
Yuki-chigai means getting lost along the way. When
Tori used some device like the ones mentioned here, he
sought to lead the Uke so that he advanced with the
intention of reaching him, and before even completing
the movement, Tori executed a small recoil, giving the
sensation that he had lost. Then he surprised Uke with
an attack.
In the case that he had no artifact to resort to and he
was forced to deceive Uke, he executed with rapid
steps, a lateral shifting in even steps, so that the
interruption was executed in an odd number. That is, in
the intention of a displacement of six firm steps to the
right, as Uke accompanied his movement, he would
step back in the fifth step and would advance in a
straight line towards the opponent, causing him to
inadvertently follow his trajectory, forcing him to turn his
body, in order to try to stay face-to-face. This way of
moving was trained repeatedly until it seemed natural
and did not depend on a specific number of steps.
Certainly we can explain that in any movement, truth
is relative and never absolute. When the Tori, through
his movements, says that there is no movement, it
means that the movement is entirely composed of
things that are not perceived. Whether or not this
movement is understood will depend on many factors.
This leads us to the conclusion that it depends on how
Uke understands things.
Shizen tradition

Yuki-chigai means getting lost

some device like the ones
mentioned here, he sought to

Then he surprised Uke with

Arts of Japan

From the point of view of interdependence, we can always reconcile the

two truths: relative and absolute.
For this to become possible, Tori must have "Donation". In this case,
this movement means not coveting, not being greedy to not precipitate
the movement. In strategic terms it is said that not being greedy means
not wanting to reach him, drive him like playing a great game.
In this strategic context - Yuki-chigai - despite the fact that it's true that
"nothing belongs to anyone", it doesn't prevent us from becoming one
with the movement of Uke, so that we know the exact moment. No matter
how insignificant the moment of altering the steps is - what matters is that
the effort is genuine. When we leave the Path toward the Path, we reach
the Path. Reaching the Path, the Path is necessarily left to the Path.
Just as many war strategies led to the creation of others, to reverse the
advantages in a situation of danger, in a concatenation of actions and
reactions, only knowledge or experience could be the difference between
victory and defeat.

Let's see it through the Yamu-o-enai no heihouu.

Yamu-o-enai means the inevitable and represents the strategy that
does not allow the opponent's defense. We will analyze it here with the
two participants dressed in Yoroi (armor).

How to train with gear!

When you begin Kickboxing in the "Martial Arts

Center" in Dinslaken, Germany, you begin training
with the focus-glove very early on.
You also practice the par ticularly difficult
applications of the techniques, independently of
the ease in performing them in front of the mirror
with the punching bag, or in shadow boxing work.
Working with focus-gloves is in fact how we can
gauge a students personal evolution in the
different areas of work that has to be done in
order to be successful in any contact sport. So in
this way training with equipment is indispensable.
Karim Rahhal has had a lot experience with this
method of training. His career includes
Kickboxing, Savate and Muay Thai and throughout
it he has had many relevant experiences, which
have given him an extraordinary preparation as a
trainer. Training work with gear and equipment is
a very important aspect that has a prime position
in the ranking of his sophisticated methods of

What training tool demands so much concentration, focus and dexterity from
beginners, advanced students and professionals alike? The glove is used in
European boxing, Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, TKD and in sport Karate and in his JKD
the great Bruce Lee himself focused on the importance of training with equipment.
Indeed, in places where for economic reasons they have no focus-gloves they look
for something to substitute them. In fact in Burmese boxing they hit the soles of

oval form. In Thailand the size of
this type of glove is quite a bit
smaller. The back of the glove is the
part that guarantees a strong grip
and avoids injury to the trainer. The
padding is very important because it
absorbs the force of the impact and
protects the hand, but at the same
time it has to be fast, so that the
trainer can manage it in a flexible and
agile way.

2. Work with focus-gloves starts

in the beginners phase. In this
phase the trainer doesnt move and
the student learns how to execute his
techniques in a slow and controlled
way. Then the same combinations
are connected but this time the
instructor moves in a continuous
way. At the next level speed and

4. - The big shield for kick techniques measures

approximately 75x35x15 cm. and it also has knots
that secure it in place. Karim Rahhal prefers hard
foam padding to air padding (although this weighs
less), because in this way there is more
resistance for the student and the sensation
is more realistic.
You can use this shield for almost any
type of kick and if you keep it low then
you can practice intensively and
combine any type of middle kicks.

5. - The "stomach shield" is a Thai

invention. It is a large and strong
padding that protects the upper and
lower abdomen. It is worn like a belt
and closes at the back of the trunk. Its
best use is for combinations of hand and
leg techniques together with knee strikes
and hooks to the body. It is also used
for front kicks.
A particularly good form of training is
the combination of the forearm shield
together with the "stomach shield",
because this way strong kicks can be
redirected with the arms toward the
abdominal area or chest.
With all these possibilities you can
do a complete training session.
Karim Rahhal does the following:

One variation that increases power is
training with boxing gloves (12-16 oz.) with a
reduced number of techniques so that they can
be applied quickly and precisely.
Other variations are the coordination of sight
and hand that can be practiced with any type of
combination of fist and kick technique.

Karim Rahhal: In my country, Morocco. I

this form of training. From the very beginning I

B.I.: You are talking about an almost universal kind of

KR: I realize your question is rhetorical, but there is no
doubt that the punch-bag is an essential tool. The bag and
the gloves are not alter native gear rather they are
complementary to each other. The bag is something fixed
and static, and this is very useful for a lot of important work.
The trainer depends a great deal on the focus-gloves which
are moveable and not fixed because there are always some
surprising movements. In this way you can train in a dynamic
way and approximate reality more closely.

clear and definite contours. Nothing is left at random and
the most common mistakes are unmasked and analyzed.
In the Israeli Krav Maga Survival System you will find an
exceptional and authentic new method of self-defense.

Practicing martial arts and combat sports is a way of life
that enables us, with perseverance, to get to know
ourselves, and become a better person.

Combat Hapkido
Grand Masters

by Grandmaster John Pellegrini

To say that when I was a teen-ager growing up in Italy in the early 1960s, Martial
Arts were not popular would be a great understatement. There were virtually no
Gymnasiums, Academies, Clubs and certainly no Martial Arts School operating as a
business. Videotapes (the old VHS/PAL) and, of course, DVDs, had not been
invented. There were no Martial Arts magazines (Black Belt magazine began
publication in the USA in June 1961, but was not available in Italy) and very few
books (mostly on Judo). Martial Arts films would not reach worldwide audiences
until the early 1970s. And, hard to believe, there was no Internet.
When it came to Martial Arts, getting accurate information, news of current
events or a serious education was extremely hard (in many areas, virtually
Among the many friends from school and the neighborhood that I socialized with
only two had any knowledge of Martial Arts and only one of them had actually
trained in Judo at a Government Sports facility. I accompanied him for a few classes,
decided that I did not like it and never went back. (A few years later, it was training
in Hand-to-Hand Combat while in the Military, that ignited my lifelong passion for
the Arts).

ut it was at that time, while a clueless teen-ager, that I heard the first of many myths connected to the

Martial Arts. I was informed by a friend that every Black Belt had to register their hands and feet as
deadly weapons with the local Police Department. He told me that in the most serious tone, without a hint
of humor or incredulity. And I believed it! Such were the times, unlike today when a quick Internet search
would reveal what a stupid and totally fake story it really is.
By the time I started serious training in the early 1970s in the USA, I no longer believed the story and had
realized that it was nothing more than one of those urban legends that had spread so widely and endured for so long
that they become facts believed by millions of people. Over the years, I heard or read several other Martial Arts stories
presented as facts. Impossible feats of breaking; delayed (sometimes by weeks!) organ failure due to the effects of Dim
Mak (death touch);
Secret (and illegal!) schools of Ninjutsu where you learn how to become a Ninja assassin (but, if they are secret, why
are they advertising in the phone book?); incredible feats of levitation and even flying; catching bullets and arrows, etc..
Most of those stories are simply myths and most of those superhuman feats involve tricks and deception as in a Las
Vegas Magic Show. Unfortunately, in my opinion, those fake stories and demonstrations damage the image of real Martial
Arts, producing false expectations, fear or ridicule in the public at large. Not a good thing for our business. But thankfully,
we live in the information age and, with a little diligent research, we can always find the truth about any story and the
scientific reality behind any superhuman exhibition. So, imagine my surprise when I was informed that the oldest and
Grand Masters

most ridiculous of those Martial Arts myths is actually.

TRUE! To explain that shocking discovery, a little background
information is necessary and we must fast-forward to 2014. At
that time, one of our Combat Hapkido students, a Supervisor
Agent of the FBI (many of them train in our system) was re-
assigned from Virginia to the island of Guam, a US Territory in
Micronesia (in the Western Pacific ocean) with a population of
about 170.000. After he had been stationed there for a few
months, he contacted my office to share with me the
incredible law in existence in Guam that I reprint here
Guam Code 6200: Any person who is an expert in the art
of karate or judo, or any similar physical art in which the hands
and feet are used as deadly weapons, is required to register
with the Department of Revenue and Taxation.
There it wasthe urban legend that, as a young, nave teen-

a silly mythits true, at least in one place in the

World. One intriguing difference, however,
between the old myth and the Guam law is that
instead of Registering with the Police, you must
do so with the Tax Authority (which, in most
places around the World, have more power and
are more feared than the Police)Does it make
you wonder what their real agenda is?
The Code (62104) continues by defining
legally who is an expert:
A karate or judo expert required to register by
the provisions of this Chapter shell be a person
trained in the arts of karate, judo or other hand-
to-hand fighting technique, whereby the hands,
feet or other parts of the body are used as
weapons, who shell have completed at least one
level of training therein and shell have been
issued a belt or other symbol showing
proficiency in such art.
So, according to this law, if you are a yellow
belt (at least one level of training) who head-
butts (or other parts of the body) someone in a
fight, you are an expert and you better have
your Tax Registration or youll be in serious
This surreal law continues in Chapter 62106
by stating what will happen to you if you
actually use any Martial Art technique:
Any registered karate or judo expert who
thereafter is charged with having used his art in a
physical assault on some other person, shell
upon conviction thereof, be deemed guilty of
aggravated assault.
From this, we are to understand that 1)since it
says used HIS art, the law does not apply to
women; 2) by qualifying assault on some other
PERSON it is legal to use martial arts
techniques on farm animals and pets.
And further, does that mean that ONLY
registered karate or judo expert will be guilty of
aggravated assault? That would seem to be an
incentive NOT to register!

Keysi, Method and technique

You can't, we can't give up technique.
Techniques are useful because they help us
recognize our body mechanics, our body
levers, and our center of gravity. Techniques
teach us to recognize our body, its abilities
and its weaknesses. This knowledge will be
our working tools and techniques will be the
bridge between our mind and our body.
With a good method and a correct
technical workout based on the person, you
can get to achieve a good technical level.
Perhaps you could even reach a level that
you would never have achieved by other
means in a long time; an incorrect technical
job has major consequences.

In Keysi, do all techniques serve?

No, not all techniques serve. A certain
technique will be very useful for a certain
development, but the wrong technique can
also be an obstacle. This will only depend
on the goal or goals we are to achieve.
A Keysi Instructor will always bear in
mind the technique, since it is our
transmission bridge and the recognition of
our physical body, but it will also be a way
to enjoy doing exercise. A student needs
technique because he is not yet aware,
and the comprehension that is to come is
far away, because he is still thinking about
technique; he needs this development time
to create a bridge between being
conscious and the body expression; that's
what technique is for. At first it seems to us
that technique is our expression, but that is
a false perception; it not only serves
knowing the technique, time is also
necessary to reach that moment in which
the body abandons the technique and it's
only expression; of course, this only will
happen after a tremendous physical and
introspection workout, and then the
technique will be the bridge that will
connect to reach the expression. The
capacity of observation is the quality of
being aware and being alert. This is Keysi.
It's not about the action itself, but the
quality that you print to the action; the
technique makes you aware of each one of
these movements, making all your body
mechanics get implied in each gesture. It
teaches you to be an observer of your
body and little by little mind and body will

Obviously I prefer the SECOND option
and I hope you can understand my way

hen we talk about combat we have to

take into account two parts: us and
the enemy. If we think about our
training, we will agree that everything
needs to be focused in a direct
relation to our potential enemies. If we
look in perspective and with clear objectives the combat
and those enemies we must ask ourselves. Where can
we focus our attack zones in real combat?
There are two areas of our body that are impossible to
harden: the eyes and the trachea.
Of course, some people are more resistant / pain
tolerant by nature, but in any case, the rest of the body
can become hardened, or what is the same, we can
achieve that when we are hit, the pain doesn't prevent
us from continuing to fight or trying to impose our own
strategy of combat.
But, there's no way you can harden those two areas.
Neither the toughest of MMA fighters nor the street
fighter, battle-tested in a thousand combats, want to

keep fighting when they get a big

pressure on their eyes. It's a blow
that leaves the human being
inoperative. For many reasons. The
eyes are not protected by muscles
or bones. Just a light layer of skin
and blood capillaries protect the
eyeball. In addition, when "touched",
the natural mechanism of protection
of the human being, makes it cry
incessantly to cleanse and heal the
possible wounds produced by the
"aggression." To attack these targets
we must take into account an
important element: it takes a very
refined technique to be able to hit an
opponent in those areas.
In the case of the trachea,
traumatism in the tracheal area
blocks the human being's air supply.
It is very traumatic and completely
disables the aggressor.
These two points are the main
targets of 90 % of WingTsun attacks
at the advanced level. Sometimes I
am surprised at the subtlety with
which the blows of the advanced
sections are designed. It is a
thorough study of the human
anatomy, a survey of the knowledge
of man's vulnerabilities, but also a
deep review of the perfect use of the
human biomechanics so as to be
able to hit those areas. There is
certainly much to practice in these
advanced programs.
In order to understand the zones
and the techniques to attack these
zones we must fully acquaint
ourselves with the techniques of our
style and the background behind
them. In this case, we can study in
depth the sections of the Biu Jee
Tao. These techniques show us an
excellent range of attacks on these
areas and how to reach them and be
out of the line of pressure when

attacking the adversary. In addition, the ideas

contained in these forms will show us how to
continue attacking the enemy even if we are out
of balance or pressured by the adversary.
The concept of keep ATTACKING is very
important despite being pressured. Let us
think that the very idiosyncrasy of WingTsun
shows us the need to learn to attack ... not to
defend. For this reason, I find it very odd that
thousands of hours of training time are
invested in the use of "defenses",
when in our system, the "defense"
itself simply DOES NOT EXIST...
For some reason, Bruce Lee

After this long reflection, let me return to the thought that I launched at the beginning of
this month's article ... If you have carefully followed the thread, you will be able to
recognize the PHASES I have described:
1) Determine Objectives
2) Study our strengths and weaknesses
3) Study the enemy
4) Look for the techniques and tactics offered by the Wing Tsun Kuen style
5) Design exercises to achieve those goals

When we talk about DESIGNING logical Training

Systems we refer to that...
In my opinion, in recent years WingTsun practitioners have focused too much on
the study of programs and "counterprograms", sections, exams and other issues
that have little to do with training. They have focused too much on accumulating
techniques and more techniques without a clear goal. Here we have an absolutely
clear objective: we must to improve our attacks so that, from the mobility, we can
obtain focusing, power, speed and precision.
In any area of training or learning there must always be a very clear line of
reasoning. A "where do we come from" and a "where do we want to go".
Once these guidelines are clear to us, we can consider what will be the
itinerary or the ways of travelling... In the WingTsun of twenty years
ago, that was absolutely clear. The most illustrious practitioners of
this system faced hundreds of adversaries using a very simple and
very clear strategy: If he enters my distance, I advance with all
the decision of the world and I beat endlessly to that adversary
that is trying to invade my territory .... It may not be the best
plan in the world ... but it is a principle. It's a clear, sharp

and simple plan: AND IT WORKS!!! Or at least, it has worked for many years.
Undoubtedly, critics and detractors of this system will come again with their "yes,
but..." and all that, but I don't think anybody can denay the forcefulness and efficiency
with which the Wing Tsun system opened way itself in Europe, just over twenty years
ago now.... Although time has passed, foes have also changed... so we have two
- Live on the "past glories".

Which one to choose? To me it's very clear...

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The re-invention of the Jiu-Jitsu principles (part 1)

The basic principle: Patience

In our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the "beginning" of the fight has something to do with
preparation rather than "conclusion". A hasty and unprepared attack has very little
effect, and in the end, it can result in a lost. Therefore "patience" is one of the most
important principles of the Gracie method. The Jiu-Jitsuka learns to focus on healthy
development. This is true for all areas of the Jiu-Jitsu, whether mental, physical or
human, whether it be ethics, respect, courage, willingness, proper dealing,
friendship, etc. In a fight, the "initial phase" is, of course, a very important part of the
whole, and here, too, is an important rule which my teacher, Professor Pedro
Hemetrio, gave me: "Who has the control of the center (of the opponent) and can
adapt flexibly and free of emotions, with appropriate use of energy, has the Fight
already halfway won."

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

To be positioned correctly is certainly one of the most important

combat tactics. You should be able to keep the pressure against the
opponent, but without wasting your own physical strength and energy.

related to what is
to achieve this "rounding" in the application of the techniques. However,
this is easier said than done, because for this, enough training time - for
called "Kuzushi"
some months - should be spend on a single technique or movement.
In our Jiu-Jitsu training drilling the techniques, before the use in free
(in Japanese),
sparring, plays also an important role, because the Jiu-Jitsukas learns to
(muscle) memorize the movement. The intensive and very technical
namely to get the

fighters, which are often forced by their passive role, to take a more
unconservative role. In Jiu-Jitsu, we have nothing against a passive role;
on the contrary, it could even be a life-retreat.

The basic principle: Timing

One of the most common mistakes in the practice of timing is that the
timing is not alone, but is closely related to what is called "Kuzushi" (in
Japanese), namely to get the opponent out of balance. Most martial
artists know the word Kuzushi from Judo, Aikido, etc., since here the
"breaking" of the opposing balance before the actual action (throw) is
very important to bring the enemy down efficiently. Kuzushi is also
important on the ground fighting and everyone who is involved in
ground fighting is aware of this, because whoever believes here to
attack the enemy from a fixed position without getting his opponent out
of balance, does not know much about advanced ground work.
Timing also requires us to be in the right place at the right moment.
Often it is also said that the faster will win. Instead, I would rather use
the term "natural movement flow", because I can explain this Jiu-Jitsu
principle better. Quickness sounds to me as if I would simply run or to
be fast to do the movement. But I rather behave as if I had to make a
short and precise sprint at the right moment.
So, what moves us first? Is it the thought or feeling? Probably as in
real-life a combination of both. One often underestimates the mental
aspect in two-combat. In fact, the true Grandmasters have also dealt

Pedro give great emphasis on keeping the Guard. He taught
me, not to force to escape the guard position, but rather to wait
for the right moment to do so. So also, here one should learn to
read between the lines ...one makes the (strong) opponent take
the first step and then counters him with less force, but precise
and with tenacity.
- If you are down and the opponent is on the mount position,
you should try to make the opponent feel unstable, so you should
fight for his balance. The hip movement also called Hupa was a
very important element for Professor Pedro and many other Jiu-
Jitsu experts such as Rickson Gracie. The "Hupa" movement works
not only to defend against the mount position, but also to defend
against the lateral control (100 kilos) and the crossed mount, creating
space to free us. So, a technique with the possibility to use it in
different situations.
Finally, it can be said that a technique should be applied at every
level of performance, regardless of the level of a student; That a
technique should remain efficient regardless of a weight class and not
least that a technique should be useful for everyone.

The stress and relaxation theory

Jiu-Jitsu consciously and subconsciously brings us to unite our whole
body and mind, creating a learning ability that could be described as a form of
"body intelligence". By this I mean that our senses are sharpened, that the body is a step ahead of us and therefore
make a technique or movement before the brain gives us the command as such. I believe in some people this body
intelligence may be great and special, without it, in their genes, but all people have this ability, but they have never dealt
with it. Professor Pedro watched his students very intensely during the Randori, which I have also learned through him,
without making a big effort to do one or the other technique, or giving them tips and tricks during the training. He always
said that the struggle of a man is also to see his personality out. He also always said that one can use his body as
sensors or antennas to feel or hear what the other is for a human being. This special ability does not only exist in Jiu-
Jitsu, but can also be seen in athletes, dancers, craftsmen, or physicians, each of them simply sweeping both bodies
and brains so that the actions are automated still in harmony with the right feeling and precise technique.
During a Randori, different moments arise where the entire body or parts of the body, such as the arm, hands, and
neck, are tense to provide a maximum performance of the selected action. Then there is the moment of relaxation, for
example, when one dominates a certain position. Through the practice of Jiu-Jitsu, we develop fine and coarse motor
motions and combine them with our thoughts and feelings. In Jiu-Jitsu one begins to imitate the movements as taught
from the instructor, but soon it is no longer an imitation, he/she begins to develop and through one's own bodily
sensibility his/her own Jiu-Jitsu. The movements get a personal dynamic and as result one grows as an individual.

Jikishin Ryu.
O Sensei Kano selected all the techniques and concepts that best adapted to his idea of
Kodokan Judo, and this created a lot of dissention among Ju Jutsu Sensei purists.
But O Sensei Kanos ideas prevailed and revolutionized the Arts. He also facilitated the
introduction and evolution of Karate Do and its exponent O Sensei Funakoshi into Japanese
society as well as that of Aiki Jutsu, today known as the Aiki Do of O Sensei Ueshiba.
In the Kodokan there was even a department called Ko Budo Kenkykai where the most
diverse Arts were studied. O Sensei Kano chose from among his most
famous pupils so that they would study and give him up-to-date
information on what they learned. On his death in 1938,
the directors of the Kodokan closed down this section.
We should point out that although they lived in
different cultures, both O Sensei Kano and Pierre de
Coubertain lived during the same era and they both
fought for the reestablishment of the same values
before they knew each other personally.
Given the great repercussion that a figure such as O
Sensei Kano had, we will now turn to the history and
current reality of Ju Jitsu in the West.
At the end of the XIX Century and beginning of the XX
Century, different Judo Sensei went to various western
countries and among them of course was the Sensei of the
Ryu Kodokan Judo. This had been created as a Ryu from
the beginning since O Sensei Kano had discovered Judo

Ju Jitsu is practiced by thousands of Jujitsukas and in some countries it
is more popular than Olympic Kodokan Judo.
The teaching of Ju Jitsu is regulated and undertaken in diverse
organizations on a worldwide level. In Japan Dai Nippon Butokukai is the
oldest and is favored by the Japanese government because of its
preservation of Japanese Martial Arts. In 2002 this organization will hold a
Martial Arts World Convention in Kyoto, its headquarters, to commemorate its
centennial with representatives from all countries and with demonstrations of
the oldest arts.
The Kokusai Budo In IMAF Organization is equally important and is directed
by Sensei Sato and has its headquarters in Tokyo.
In the West the oldest organization is the European Ju Jitsu Federation
directed by Sensei Vernon Bell. Others were later established
like the Ju Jitsu International Federation and the European
Ju Jitsu Union directed by Orlandi and Baguena, the
World Ju Jitsu Organization directed by Sensei Clark and
Sensei Bertoletti, the World Kobudo Federation directed
by Sensei Therien and Sensei Morris, Sekai Ishin Ryu Ju
Jitsu Renmei directed by Sensei Pell, The World Elite
Black Belt Society directed by Sensei Cheek. Even the
Ibero-American Confederation of Ju Jitsu has been created and
is directed by Luis Baguena thus uniting all Spanish and
Portuguese speaking countries.
In addition to the above mentioned
organizations many others exist that take

Filipino Martial Arts H2H and Kyusho

T.A.C.T.I.C.S. Pangsinawaling Panuntukan

In the Filipino Martial Arts it is said that when you learn to use one type of weapon
you then can use anything as a weapon as well as empty hand tactics. The
movements from one translate easily into the others, with slight modifications. As
mentioned in my first article titled FMA and Kyusho I state why FMA is a great
Martial Art System. I point out how under stressful encounters our Gross Motor
Skills, which are big movements; arms extending forward, upward or downward in
big motions, dominate our response to a threat. What training in FMA does is give
us what I like to call Trained Gross Motor Movements. Training with a single or
double stick hones in on our natural Gross Motor Movements. Training with edged
weapons makes our movements sharper and our reactions quicker. So when we put
down the weapons our hands move quicker, cleaner and naturally where as our
opponents who do not train in FMA seem to move more slowly.
I once held a two hour FMA workshop for 14 people, some experienced and some
new to martial arts.
Filipino Martial Arts

he first hour was double stick in which I taught them a Sinawali pattern. We went over the different ranges
adding takedowns, kicks and disarms. The next half hour was knife defense followed by empty hand for the
last half hour. At the end of the workshop I asked what each section had in common. All I saw were blank
stares. After a few moments I told them that they used the same Sinawali pattern in everything. A slight
pause as they considered this then many ohs were uttered as they realized what transpired over the last
two hours.
Martial Arts are about movement. Take one set of movements and try it against as many attack scenarios as you can.
Grabs, chokes, punching combinations, and anything you can think of. Use your creative imagination. There are no
wrong ways only better ways.
You do not have to make your defense, counter-offense or whatever you like to call it, complex. As my Combat Arnis
instructor, Professor Danny Paulo used to tell us with a chuckle K.I.S.S., keep it simple stupid.
In this article I am going to use a Sinawali pattern and aim at Kyusho Targets.
Sinawali is a structured stick pattern alternating left and right hands in a weaving manner. These drills can be done
Double Stick, Single Stick and one Empty Hand, both Hands Empty, Single Stick and Knife, Knife and Empty Hand and
Double Knife.
You can use the Sinawali as an initial response or attack and combine it with kicks, locks, strikes and throws.
Kyusho Targets are specific areas on the body that we manipulate to take advantage of anatomical weaknesses.
These fall on the nervous, respiratory, muscular, and skeletal systems. The Nervous System being the one to have the
quickest response is the most targeted.
As stated earlier slight modifications will be needed. To start we do not fight in the closed stick position, with one hand
near our ear and the other under our opposite elbow.
We will use one Sinalawi pattern for our examples.
Standing in a right lead fighting position, the right hand will jab out at a 45* angle and retracts to starting position.
Left hand strikes from right to left slightly downward and ends on the left near the head. This is followed by the right
hand also striking downward and ending on the left.

Lets look at a few examples.

Starting in right lead with opponent in common left lead.
1.) Arm Destruction:
Attacker executes a right cross.

You respond with a right knuckle wrap to the inside of his wrist striking Kyusho targets. The targets will depend on
which punch is used; vertical, horizontal or diagonal. This does not matter as you will be striking either the Radial,
Medial or Ulnar nerve.
Hand weakens and opens. Electrical shock and numbing can occur in the fingers and arm.
Right hand comes back into chamber and the left hand targets just below the crease of the arm on the top of the
forearm muscle activating the Lateral Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve (Kyusho Target) with your Ulna bone.
Attackers right leg buckles and arm weakens.
The left hand ends up near the left ear. Now the right hand strikes the center of the Bicep muscle with a Sword Hand
into another Kyusho Target, the Musculocutaneous nerve.
Pain in entire arm as it swings out. Electrical shock and numbing will occur down to the fingers. Loses use of arm.

2.) Elbow Lock/Break:

Attacker executes a left jab.
Again knuckle wrap with the right hand this time striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand.

These are the nerves situated between the bones of the back of the hand.
Hand opens and becomes weak.
Left open hand strikes the outside of the wrist, grabs and drags fingers into wrist targets on the inside of the
Body jolts forward and arm weakens. Legs weaken.
Pull attackers left hand as your right hand strikes in the middle of the attackers triceps muscle.
Arm straightens causing elbow to lock, hyper extend or break.

3.) Head Throw:

Attacker executes a left jab then a right cross.

Knuckle wrap with the right hand striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand as in example #2.
Hand weakens and opens. Electrical shock and numbing can occur in the fingers and arm.
Left open hand strikes the inside of the right wrist, grabs and drags putting pressure into wrist targets.
Body jolts forward and arm weakens. Legs weaken.
Right knife hand strike to the Kyusho Target on the neck located at the center of the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle level
Filipino Martial Arts

with the Adams Apple.

This will cause the body to weaken, severe pain and much more.
Now slide your hand onto the skull, step back with your left foot and throw.

4.) Rib Strike:

Sinawali is also done in zones. These are sometimes referred to as Heaven and Earth or High and Low.
I like to use the latter. You can have any combination; High-Low-High, Low-High-Low, High-High-Low, etc.
In this next example we will use a High-High-Low targeting pattern.
Attacker executes a left strike.
Stepping to your right, knuckle wrap with the right hand striking the Kyusho Targets on the back of the hand as
in example #2.
Strike on the body with your left hand just behind the shoulder causing attackers body to turn exposing the
rib cage.

Now with your knuckles strike the

lateral branch of the T5 nerve, which is
midline on the side of the body between
the ribs. The trajectory of this strike is
straight in toward the opposite side.
This will cause the diaphragm to spasm
affecting the breathing as well as rapid
withdrawal, entire body weakening, loss
of motor function, severe pain, and

Caution is needed when practicing any Martial Art.

*Even though footwork was not discussed you should always be angling away from the attackers strikes.
**Only a few effects of striking Kyusho Targets were mentioned but some strikes can cause more dysfunctions of the
body and internal systems.
