The Philippines has shared a long relationship with China and her people. It is definitely a no-brainer
why we have Filipino-Chinese countrymen and Chinese ancestry. However even with our long standing
ties with China, discrimination is still ever present against people of Chinese ethnicity. Childish insults
such as ching-chong or teasing questions like paano ka makakakita? are examples of the
discrimination they experience.

It should be taken note that not all Chinese are the same, and that makes the sweeping stereotypes of
them even more ridiculous. Because of migration and regional difference there are many variants of
Chinese culture. There are Filipino- Chinese, which are colloquially referred to as Chinoys. There are
Singaporean- Chinese, which culture is different from Mainland China. A huge number of Hong Kong
citizens are ethnically Chinese, but they themselves hate to be referred as such. But even though
Chinese culture has different categories, Chinese individuals shouldnt be constricted of these
generalizations.

INTRODUCTION

The globalization of the internet has caused us to view the world in a much wider scale. We are all
aware of the hugeness and diversity of humanity. The world is comprised of different people and
colourful cultures and that makes diversity beautiful.

However even though we are aware of the worlds diverse people, we cant fully say that we truly
experienced them. In spite of this, sometimes we continue to make unverified assumptions regarding
people of difference races. Stereotypes are born from these overgeneralized assumptions. Although it
can be argued that these stereotypes have some semblance of truth rooted in them, they cant be valid
statements

Stereotypes hurt different races and cultural and ethnic groups. Stereotypes can hurt an individuals
uniqueness and instead they are treated according to the pre-conceived notion of their ethnicity. This is
harmful, especially when negative stereotypes are getting more attention.

In our project Ditch the Label we aim to disprove the overgeneralized pre-conceived notions of races.
We will tear down stereotypes, one myth at a time.
