Intervention Evaluation Plan

Problem:

A significant rise in substance abuse within the student population as more students have received
disciplinary action related to substance abuse.

Response:

Due to the growing numbers of students receiving disciplinary action related to substance abuse, there is
a need for awareness on drug and alcohol abuse. In accordance with White Lake High Schools school
counseling programs mission and vision statements, an intervention evaluation plan is created to provide
information about how many students are affected by drug and alcohol abuse and how they come in
contact with drugs and alcohol so that further steps can be made to improve the comprehensive school
counseling program.

Data:

Process Data (Projected number of 1609 students

students affected)
Perception Data (Type of Pre/post survey (knowledge about substance abuse)
surveys/assessments to be used)
Outcome Data (Achievement, 10% decrease in discipline referral rate related to substance
attendance and/or behavior data to abuse
be collected)

Conclusion:

The ASCA Mindsets & Behavior notes that student success is measured through academic,
personal/social and career development. Substance abuse is an issue related to student behavior and
affects all aspects of their development. However, to meet the behavior standards of the ASCA, students
must be taught self-management skills so that they are prepared to make healthy decisions for
themselves.

School counselors have gathered data through discipline records and surveys about students and their
relationship to substance abuse. Using the data gathered, school counselors are able to determine how
many students are affected by substance abuse, how they view substance abuse and what their
perception is about substance abuse.

The current data has found a majority of students succumbing to substance abuse due to peer pressure.
There is an immense amount of anxiety and stress when it comes to feeling pressured to use drugs or
alcohol in the presence of other students. The previous action and lesson plans focused on court cases
involving substance abuse, specifically legal action, and did not leave much for discussing how to
approach peer pressure. These findings show that the action and lesson plans in the school counseling
curriculum must be revised and reformatted to address peer pressure and substance abuse.

New action and lessons plans should include acting out role-plays and implementing healthy problem-
solving skills, which will ensure that students are given the tools to combat peer pressure with substance
abuse and become aware of the consequences of substance abuse. In addition, throughout the school
year school counselors will make themselves available for school-sponsored drug and alcohol awareness
assemblies or events and participate in school district training or workshops that discuss legal matters,
including referrals to a local rehabilitation center and necessary disciplinary action. A decrease in issues
related to substance abuse will be evident due to these improvements in the school counseling
curriculum.
