Unity in Diversity

Indonesia is a heterogen country, where people live in diversity. Here in Indonesia we have
various culture, language, religion, but still we live in tranquillity. People in Indonesia live with
huge tolerance wherever they are, especially in Bali. As we all know, that Hindu is the majority
religion in Bali, while the majority religion in Indonesia is Islam, but in Bali we live in peace. As
long as i live in Bali, i have not yet see a problem with religion diversity as the root of the problem,
we do not care where we are from, what is our religion (it doesnt mean that we dont notice at
what is restricted for another people), we still respect to each other, we smile, greet when we meet
people, and it makes our relationship is getting stronger and stronger than before.
Here in Bali, there are many ceremonials and celebrations, and surely as a student it will
be a holiday, and it is what i say spreading goodness in a holy day. My daily activity is run as
usual, nothing changes but go to school. At some celebrations, me and many other non-hindu
participate in it, as example, a celebration that still amaze me until now is Nyepi, Nyepi in
indonesia is mean silent or quiet, it isnt an idiom, because it is literally silent, you can imagine
that all the people in Bali are turn their lights off, do not go out of their house, all the activity are
stopped. It is one of Beautiful days in a year for me, where the stars shine brightly, makes us be
grateful to God that He made a beautiful world and give us chance to enjoy it.
For me, tolerance doesnt mean that we should participate to others celebration, i think it
is enough to say congratulation or wish for good luck to people who celebrate it. By saying it to
them it is showing that we care, and it is good for relationship.
it is beautiful when we respect each other, do not notice about religion, culture, or another
diversity. Because peace is not unity in similarity but unity in diversity, in the comparison and
conciliation of differences (Mikhail Gorbachev). You can do what I cannot do, I can do what you
cannot do, and together we can do great things (Mother Teresa). Our ability to reach unity in
diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization (Mahatma Gandhi). It is not blood that
bound us, we are together because I feel what You feel, and You feel what I feel, we are bound by
our spirit, spirit of Pancasila, Spirit of Humanity.
