My name is Laquichia Cook and Im Jarions mother. God blessed
me with my precious son on August 5, 2011. Hes been through so
much; and hes fighting for his life (terminal illness). Jarion has had
34 surgical procedures and 3 major surgeries from birth to 5 years
old. Hes on more medications than you can imagine! I see him
fight every day. My son is a true warrior!

To Each and Every One of You: It has been a true honor representing
so many neighborhoods filled with MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE!
Wow! Joining Northside three (3) years ago was one of the BEST
things that couldve happened to me. Although I wasnt born and
reared in Northside, YOU accepted me and thats an amazing feeling
something that had been missing in my life for many, many years. I
thank God I never look down on people no matter how high I climb
in my life because it was the same people I was able to help when
I had money who ended up helping me when I lost everything. We
prayed together, talked, laughed, and even cried. I thank God for those
of you who genuinely believed in me from day one when Northside
Vibes was being introduced via word-of-mouth, 8 x 11 flyers being
circulated throughout a 5-block radius of Brookland Park Boulevard
and North Avenue, and even when I stood outside flagging down
drivers with business magnets on their vehicleswhich gave me the
opportunity to write advertising contracts on the hood of my mothers
pick up truck. Thanks to those of you who even laughed at me because
it truly gave me the strength and determination to use my gifts and
talents to Bless such a deserving community with a vehicle (newspaper)
to feature the GOOD THINGS happening throughout our neighbor-
hoods, as well as many communities outside of Northside. Bottom line:
I do not deserve any credit because MY GOD DID IT ALL!

It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday, August 19th in Heathsville, Virginia,
where a quaint cottage off the beaten path at Balls Creek Sanctuary on
the Potomac River was about to bear witness to the joy and happiness 35
years in the making as Attorney Brenda Page welcomed friends, family
and clients to celebrate the 35th anniversary of her law practice! Doing
anything as a career for 35 years straight is an amazing accomplish-

What a Wonderful Day at
Partnership for Families
Last month, nearly 600 individuals attended a Back to School Car-
nival where 200 children received backpacks filled with school sup-
pliesthey were gone in 30 minutes! We heard you loud and
clearnext year more backpacks! From a reptile exhibit to a train
ride, families enjoyed a day of fun in the sun. We are truly grateful
to our vendors and nonprofit partners who made the day a success.
Most importantly, I want to thank the Northside Community for at-
tending in record numbers we are grateful for your support; and

VCU Health Child Care Northside
Receives Top Rating!
VCU Health Child Care Northside site director, Sarah Verno, and assistant site
director, Jessica Cherebin, were all smiles when they received notification on
August 18 that the child care center had received a level-five designation the
highest possible rating from Virginia Star Quality and Improvement System,
the states voluntary quality-rating organization of early-childhood education.
The level-five designation affirms that VCU Health Child Care Northside
complies fully with child care licensing standards, employs staff with formal
education in early childhood education, implements a best-practice curriculum
aligned with the states early-learning guidelines, maintains a high-quality
learning environment with positive social and academic interactions between
children and teachers, and participates in ongoing professional development in
accordance with state standards.
Located on the ground floor of the Lora M. Robins Family Learning Center at
800 W. Graham Road, VCU Health Child Care Northside is a member of Part-
nership for Families, an umbrella nonprofit dedicated to changing the lives of
families with young children through collaborative communities of support.
In particular, the child care center focuses on kindergarten readiness by serving
children ages six weeks through six years.
It follows the Reggio Emilio philosophy, an early-childhood-education meth-
odology that originated in Italy and promotes a child-led approach. As Verno
once explained it, if a teacher notices preschoolers studying an ant hill on the
playground, she will introduce books, art projects, and interactive play related
to ants.
Another factor that sets the child care center apart is the diversity of the fami-
lies it serves. In a city often defined by de facto public school segregation by
race and class, the child care center is accessible to families of varied back-
grounds due to its sliding-scale fees. Two years ago, the child care center in-
augurated a Virginia Preschool Initiative Plus classroom specifically for low-
income children living in the city of Richmond.
The level-five designation officially recognizes the child care centers contri-
butions to Northsidecontributions that many Northside families have recog-
nized since its founding in 2010.
I appreciate the Reggio teaching approach, said Carra Rose, parent of two
children attending the child care center. The staff goes above and beyond to
engage with the children, the parents, and the community. The feeling is mu-
tual. We are so grateful for the support of all our partners and to be part of
the Northside communities! Cherebin said.
