Discussion between Essar Power & FAG Bearings India Ltd.

Date: 06/12/2016

Topic: High vibration in CEP 2B vertical motor on DE bearing (6228)

History:

1. On 12th Aug, during FAGs visit the problem related to temperature rise was resolved
by inserting of 3mm shim. Both the bearings were insulated.
2. On 28th August, the vibration Started and readings are as mention below
NDE H=60.9 micron, NDE V=63.4 micron. However, vibration spectrum did not show
any significant peaks related to bearin gdamage frequencies. The peaks which were
noticed were of 1X & 2X frequencies.
3. On 23rd Sep Essar replaced NDE Bearing with FAG Make Insulated Bearing (7330).
However, vibration were still present.
4. On 25th Sep, Essar replaced DE Insulated Bearing with NON Insulated Bearing (6228).
After this No load and load trial were found normal.
5. On 4th October Vibration Started Increasing.

In order to attned the issue of increasing vibrations, enginers from FAG visited Essar
Power on 5th & 6th Dec.

Actions Taken:

On 5th, FAG observed the insulated DE bearing which was replaced by non-insulated
bearing on 25th Sep. No abnormal observations wer made other than axially shifted
runing track. However, FAG requested to send the bearing to Maneja for detailed
analysis.
The vibration spectrum of motor 2B was analyzed by FAG together with CM expert of
Essar and found no vibration frequencies in high frequency zone. The only peaks
noticed were in low frequency zone and in the multiple of 1X & 2X of RPM.
However, the bearing will be sent to FAG and FAG will submit the report containing
the probable reason for bearing faiure to Essar.
A short training session was organized by FAG on 5th. Attendies from Essar found it
useful.
On 6th, The Motor 2B was checked with already assembled bearings for rotor shift.
However, no axial shift of rotor was observed.
The bearing cover on DE side was removed to check the bearing visually. No
significant damage marks on the bearing raceway were observed.
However, the grease inside the bearing was found to be dry. FAG collected some
sample of the dried grease for their observation. However, Essar confirmed that there
is no issue with grease.

Further Actions:

Essar Power will send the insulated DE bearing to FAG for distructive analysis and FAG
will submit the detailed report to Essar confirming probable reason for bearing
failure, high vibration and further actions to take.
