Overthepast100years,homesandbusinesseshavebeenbuiltalongtheLosAngeles
river.Theyvebeenmanagedwithdamsandchannelization.Anyeffortstoreturntheriverback
tonaturalitymustconsidertheimpactontheresidentsthathavecolonizedalongtheriver.
Whenthechannelwasaddedinthe1940sandeversinceitmadepeoplefeelsaferinLos
Angelesandencouragedthecitytobecomeoverpopulatedovertheyears.(Emily)Whena
streamischannelizedthereisalossoftreesandvegetationandthespeedofthewater
increaseswhichcauseanumberofproblems.Withoutvegetationwildlifehasahardertime
findingfood,andwithouttreesanimalssuchasbirdslosetheirhomes.Whenthespeedofthe
waterincreases,fishthatcantswiminfastmovingwateraredrivenout.(GarretE.)
Channelizationreducesvegetationalongthestreambank.Streambankerosionisanevitable
process,butbylettingthestreammeandernaturally,theprocesswillbeslow.With
channelization,itcantake10yearsforstreambankerosiontodotheamountofdamageit

sedimentarydepositionalbuildupinthereservoir.Withinandoutsidetheriverthatwould
normallywashdownstreamgetbuiltupbehinddamsandstarttoconsumealargeamountof
oxygenastheycompose.Damoperatorsreleaseoxygendeprivedwaterwithunnatural

Floodinginitselfisanaturalevent,andallowstheflowofsediments/nutrientsintoareas
wheresaidnutrientsarelacking.Itsanaturalevent,anaturaldisaster,ofwhichthe
ecosystemsareusedtothiscertainshockandcanrecoverquickly.Whiletheissueofflooding
comesinmindwithmanmadestructures,issueslikethesecanbeeasilyavoidedwithsmarter
designofbuildingsthatareabletosurviveflooding,similartothedesignsofhousinginNew
