A. Preparation
Following the GMA 7s campaign Think Before You Click

THINK about it - according to June 2011 figures from Facebook statistics portal
Socialbakers.com, more than 25 million Filipinos use Facebook, the world's largest social
networking site. That is reportedly the 7th highest number of users in the world, just behind
significantly more populous countries like the U.S. India and Indonesia .

On Twitter, Pinoy users also number by the millions, with local topics and personalities usually
making Twitter's list of worldwide trending topics. No wonder a recent article in 24/7 Wall St.
an online publication of financial news and opinion, dubbed the Philippines "The Social
Networking Capital of the World."

Every hour of every single day, millions upon millions of Filipinos flock to social networking
sites to read and to speak their minds. It's the power of these staggering numbers that
inspired the GMA News and Public Affairs campaign called Think Before You Click.

Think Before You Click is SerbisyongTotoo from GMA Network - a campaign to promote the
responsible use of social media. With this advocacy, GMA News and Public affairs becomes
the first broadcast news organization in the Philippines to take a stand against cyber
harassment and bullying.

Think Before You Click aims to encourage Filipinos to be more mindful of what they post, to
think before they hit the enter key. Social media has indeed become such a powerful tool.
And Filipinos, who have already shown the world the phenomenon that is People Power, can
once again unite for a healthier, friendlier, more caring and constructive online world.

B. Introducing discussion to the class

1. Sharing cases of famous people whose messages of tweets are regretful and caused
them some troubles
2. Asking the students their own guideline(s) before hitting the post or share buttons.
3. Asking the students to evaluate their own facebook / twitter account(s) and examine the
posts or comments they share online.
C. Discussion questions:

1. Do you likely post or share things in the online community without first thinking its
implications later on. Is this a risky behavior? Why or why not? Do you find this true to
yourself or to your friends?
2. Do young people fully understand the consequences of their online activity? Why or why
not?
3. In what ways can online material can damage your reputation of peace of mind? Do you
some examples of cases? How do you feel about it?
4. Besides not thinking before clicking, what are some of the reasons people may send
and post inappropriate material online?
5. What kind of personal rules would help other people think before sending/posting?
(Let the students generate their own thoughts and insights.)

D. Class Activity
Present the Netiquette rules. (Student were asked to have prior reading on this)
Ask the students to work in pairs or groups and answer the following questions.

1. What did you gain from reading others lists of netiquette rules? Which rules did you
like/not like? Which rules do you think young people your age most often dont follow?
2. On your reading of the Netiquette rules, which of these rules do you personally follow?
Do you plan to change anything you are currently doing online based on these guidelines?
3. What other rules would recommend adding to these lists?

E. Call to Action
Create a campaign / project to encourage students in our school to follow these ethical guidelines
and have GOOD ONLINE PRESENCE
