ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 2

Should developing countries concentrate on improving industrial skills or should they

promote education first?

Developing nations face the challenge of limited financial resources that limit their ability

to expand rapidly. Limited financial resources also force these nations to choose and prioritize on

one task at the sake of other tasks. One of the dilemmas that developing countries face is

choosing between developing industrial skills in their workforce or upgrading the education

system. Research suggests that because industrial skills and education are both critical drivers of

national prosperity developing nations need to invest equally in them if they are to achieve rapid

development.

The quality of human resources has to be enhanced to promote rapid industrialization. A

Skilled human resource creates a chance for developing countries to expand its industrial base.

This way the developing countries can produce a wide variety of valued commodities and sell

them at a profit. Enhancing the industrial skills in a country also generates more employment

opportunities for the citizens of a nation. Equipping the citizens with industrial skills encourages

self -employment and reduces reliance on white collar jobs(Saboe, M., & Condliffe,2015). A

good example is a country training its farmers on how to make and utilize organic fertilizers to

enhance crop productivity. Vocational schools are good avenues through which developing

countries such as the Philippines can enhance industrial skills and technical know-how in their

citizens and workforce. Rapid Industrialization is a major indicator of development.

Education can eliminate widespread poverty in developing countries. According to

Briscoe (2016), illiteracy is a major source of poverty in developing nations. It is not surprising

that rich first world countries have the highest education rates. Education stimulates economic

growth and stability. It creates independence in the citizens of a nation. Industrial skills

possessed by a few people in a nation cannot impact the entire nation. Widespread investment in

education is needed to expand mental capacity and decision making abilities of the citizens.

Education is thus the backbone of civilization. Developing nations that fail to invest in education

and focus on industrial skills alone remain slaves to progressive nations forever. Education

prepares the society for development.

In conclusion, developing countries need to develop the abilities of their citizens from

both the industrial skills and education perspective. Both types of skills have monumental

benefits to the nation. When one of these areas is left behind full development and prosperity

cannot be achieved.
