ABSTRACT

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) play important role
in determining the quality of wastewater. Hence it is necessary to calculate COD and BOD of
water before setting up of wastewater treatment plant. The dairy industry generates on an
average 2.5-3.0 litres of wastewater per litre of milk processed. Generally this wastewater
contains large quantities of fat, casein, lactose, and inorganic salts, besides detergents, sanitizers
etc. used for washing. These all contribute largely towards their high biological oxygen demand
(BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and oil and grease much higher than the permissible
limits. Such untreated wastewater pollutes land and river system so that proper treatment of dairy
wastewater is necessary before disposal in environment. In this study COD and BOD analysis is
done for sterilized dairy wastewater after and before treating it with microbes in inverse
fluidization under aerobic condition for different time intervals. And COD % reduction is 91.66
% and BOD % reduction is 97.8%.
