NAMI Nevada Executive Director

Job Decription

The contract executive director shall provide the leadership for accomplishing vision, direction
and growth for NAMI Nevada through management of its financial, physical and volunteer
resources, within policies as adopted by the Board of Directors and will report to the Board of
Directors.

NAMI Nevada is the statewide organization of the national Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI is
the country's largest grassroots organization that educates, supports, and advocates for
individuals living with a mental illness and their families. The state organization provides
centralized advocacy and the infrastructure and teacher training for local affiliates who conduct
classes and support groups in their communities that are free to participants.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Program Development

Assist the Board of Directors in establishing and implementing organizational policies


and procedures and in formulating short and long-term plans, toward accomplishing
the NAMI NV mission.
Support the development and sustainability of local affiliates by acting as liaison
between the Alliance and affiliates, promoting membership, encouraging leadership
development, facilitating opportunities for affiliates to partner, and assist in
developing local community connections.
Identify, implement and sustain NAMI Programs, in partnership with local affiliates to
meet the needs of communities in Nevada
Engage members, volunteers and communities using multiple platforms such as social
media, presentations, and campaigns.
Plan and execute annual membership meeting including reporting activities, financial
information and goals for the next year.

Development

Utilize knowledge and skill in principles and practices of not-for-profit agency


administration including strategic and tactical planning, fund development, financial
management and volunteer management.
Create and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the organization,
helping to expand philanthropic support for the organization through identification and
cultivation of individual, foundation, corporate and public sources of revenue.
Assure continuing financial health and growth of NAMI Nevada through grant
writing, annual giving campaign, endowments and other fund-raising activities.
Actively explore grant funding opportunities by preparing professional grant
proposals and accurately submitting all required updates and reports.
Supervise the Program and Finance Manager in the preparation of the scope of work
and budget for all funding requests in a timely manner allowing for Board approval
prior to submission.
Build a sustainable and diversified funding plan with multiple funding streams
including the Mental Health Block Grant with the State of Nevada, other grant
opportunities, fundraising activities, and donor development and campaigns.
Identify and coordinate joint fund development opportunities in partnership with the
local affiliates.

Financial Management

Supervise the Program and Finance Manager in developing and presenting an annual
budget to the Board of Director for approval.
Supervise the Program and Finance Manager in providing monthly financial reports to
the Board of Directors including financial status of the organization, achievement of
benchmarks from development plan and explanation of deviations from annual budget.
Establish and maintain appropriate fiscal controls for the organization.
Ensure the organizations is within established best practices for non-profits including
administration to programming ratio and diversification of funding.

Community and Public Relations Advocacy

Professionally represent NAMI Nevada to the community including mental health


professionals, business leaders, advisory councils and policymakers.
Organize the annual NAMI Nevada State Conference.
Publish a professional newsletter at least quarterly and maintain the website.
Educate members, volunteers and communities about the mental health systems of care in
Nevada.
Develop and coordinate NAMI Nevadas Public Policy Committee
Track Public Policy issues and educate membership, communities, and policy makers
about issues impacting individuals and families living with mental illness.
Develop, implement and maintain an advocacy mobilization plan in partnership with the
local affiliates.
Work with Board Committees to plan media and marketing strategies that will increase
the visibility of the NAMI State Organization
Ensure the content of the NAMI State Organizations website is current, in line with
NAMI Standards of Excellence and contains information important to Nevadans
regarding mental health, affiliate activities, advocacy opportunities and systems of care
available to Nevadans.
Work in partnership with local affiliates for successful outreach and community
education events.

Relationship with Board of Directors

Attend all Board of Directors meetings.


Be the communication liaison between the board and the affiliates.
Reports directly to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization. Prepares
agenda for Board meetings in collaboration with Board President
Prepares and distributes Board Packet to all Board members at least three days prior to
Board meeting
Works with Board to develop short-term, intermediate, and long-range goals for NAMI
State Organization
Work with committee chairs for the achievement of goals set by the Board of Directors
and committees.

Office Operations, Management and Supervision

In compliance with Board policy, decide all matters of administrative and supervisory
detail regarding the operation and maintenance of the NAMI State Organization office
including its day-to-day affairs.
Respond timely to community and affiliate needs through phone calls, emails and any
other type of communication.
Recruit, engage, sustain and manage volunteers to help in the office.
Develop the knowledge and skill to use multiple NAMI information gathering and
web-based systems including membership management and website.

Minimum Qualifications

A shared lived experience with mental illness either as a peer or family member
preferred.
Bachelor degree required. Master's degree preferred.
5 years experience in non-profit management with strong history of fundraising and grant
writing (samples of grants written and campaign materials may be requested).

Desired Skills

Volunteer management experience


Experience with public speaking and community education
Demonstrated success in leadership roles and experience managing staff.
Strong knowledge of cultural competence of various populations of Nevada
Computer skills to include Word, Excel, Publisher, website management, social media,
data systems, and online newsletter publishing
Knowledge of Nevada mental health systems of care
