However, we can, to a certain extent, shape our own destiny. Every member of the Admiral
Merchants team focuses on our Strategic Profile every day. We focus on our Vision Statement, 2290 Reminders 6
our Core Values and on our Mission Statement. We believe if we do that, we will earn more
of the business of our agents and their shipper customers. I know that commitment pays off Updates To Excess Dimension Loads 6
and we are seeing the results every day.

Members of our sales team are out in our agents offices all of the time. They are there to Office Visits 7

member of our sales team, Joe Upholzer, at a Cracker Barrel restaurant where we met with

In addition, he started his own agency a few years ago and has successfully represented some
of our biggest competitors during that time. After hearing about us, as well as hearing about Top 20 Drivers By Equipment Type

to Tim talk about the IT tools we have, listening to Doug talk about the changes we have
made to Ops and how we can deliver great contractors and other operational support to
his shippers, and after listening to Jim talk about the great support he would receive from
our credit and processing teams, he was even more enthusiastic about working with us. We
repeated that presentation at every stop on our trip. We were joined at some of the stops by

by Wes Dyer, the best driver recruiter in the business. At times,
Joe would tell the agents about his prior experience over 20
years as an agent for Admiral and others, and about why he
made the decision to join Admiral Merchants. At other times,
Wes would remind the prospect about how he was available 24
hours a day to try to find one of our contractors who might be
available to move a load.

I was convinced after each of these stops that these agents know
that the Admiral Merchants team which is there to support
the agents business is second to none in the industry, and
we are seeing results. As everyone knows, the last few years
have been tough for our industry. I mentioned this in the
opening paragraph of this note. Our commitment is measured
in part by the hard work of every member of the team. We
work long days and many of us on occasion work long nights,
too. I received a text message from Wes Dyer at 3:57 a.m. on Back Row (Left to right): Brent Layton, Jim Bemis, Joe

issued by Kelsey or Tony are the proof of this pudding. We
continue to have many more good days than bad; our average
daily revenue is going up, as is our average revenue per load.
Finally, the number of loads our contractors move each day
is going up as well. During Q2 of 2016, our average daily
revenue was $337,511; our average revenue per load was
$1,838; and our average loads per day were 184. During the
second quarter of this year, our average daily revenue was
$370,708; our average revenue per load was $1,899; and we
moved on average 195 loads per day. While we have a ways to
go to achieve our goals, this is progress indeed.

As everyone who reads this newsletter has heard me say, this

is a service and pennies business. We are not inventing a cure
for cancer or coming up with ways to achieve world peace.
But it is a complicated, challenging business nonetheless. If
every member of the Admiral Merchants Team focuses on

we will achieve our goals. If every member of the Admiral Brian Short

those goals.

Thanks for everything you do. Because of your extraordinary

When Admiral Comes Full Circle

Contractor Services Specialist, Bonnie Bley, informed us of a
very cool and coincidental story recently! Her son, Kevin, is in
the United States Air Force working in Traffic Management.
Kevins job is to log the cargo that comes in and off the
planes, and to arrange shippers for the cargo.

When he was at tech school last spring in Fort Lee, VA to

learn his job, he was studying the training manual when
something caught his eye. Admiral Merchants is listed as a top
carrier to utilize in the US Air Force training manual! How
fun to be able to call home and tell his mom that her work is
mentioned in a manual seen by thousands, and that they are
one of the best trucking options for military loads.

Thanks for sharing, Bonnie, and thanks to Kevin and all

other military members for their service!!

Updates to Excess Dimension Loads

Effective immediately, all excess dimension loads exceeding 15 feet tall and/or 15 feet wide
will need to be approved by the Permit Department, as well as the Operations Department.
Admiral will be creating an authorized list that has been approved by the Permits and Operations
Departments, in order to make it a seamless process if you normally haul loads exceeding these
dimensions.

If you are interested in being added to the approved list, please contact your assigned Freight
Coordinator and they will meet with Permits and Doug Milroy for approval. The drivers
qualifications, experience, and safety record will be reviewed during the approval process.

Any loads exceeding 15 feet tall and/or 15 feet wide must be ordered through the Admiral Permit Department. If you haul
anything with these dimensions without our knowledge, Admiral will not reimburse any permits, escorts, or additional costs to
the truck or contractor.

Admiral understands that drivers who are approved for these loads are considered the best of the best, and these policies and
procedures are not designed to take anything away from that. They were created to reinforce the fact that these loads require
tremendous skill and attention to detail in order to complete them successfully. Everyone has a responsibility to make sure these
loads are handled properly and damage-free, and we are here to help in any way we can!

Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding.

Office Visits
If ever a load happens to bring you through Minneapolis, MN, Admiral would love to host you for a visit! Just give the office a call and
we will gladly assist you in finding the best place to park your truck, and arranging a taxi for you. We will show you around the office
so you can stop at each department, and put faces to all the people that have helped you here at Admiral. You can pick up any supplies
you may need, and someone from the office will treat you to lunch.

Below are some of our drivers that have visited lately.

a great treat for the office employees to get out
and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Dougs Dedications
Below are a few pictures of recent loads, as well as the beautiful trucks that deliver them. A special
thanks to all the Admiral drivers who work so hard each and every day to make Admiral a success; this
article is dedicated to you!

Harley Nelson (unit 6142) crossed the border at Oroville, WA and Osoyoos, BC, with a load of pools. He was 16 wide
which means he needed 3 pilot cars in Canada, and could only travel the BC 97 from 10pm to 5am. Carol at Agency 2103
had this load and Harley noted that she did a great job with organizing the routing, pilot cars and permits. Great job by all!

Ed and Michelle Williamson (Unit 6361) hauled this Gearbox for Barnhart Crane, even after the load being put off for a few
days. The team waited until the permits and escorts were ready, and they were able to load and unload on time and with great
professionalism.

Admiral driver Steve Bennett (Unit 5811) picked up what is known as a bridge or jet way in Ogden UT, and delivered it
to the Dulles International Airport. These Jet ways are what you walk through to get from the airport, and onto a plane. Jason
(Agent 2383) was the agent on this load and did a great job as well. Bumper to bumper this load was 95 long, and the total
weight was 100,000 lbs. Great job Steve and Jason!

Dougs Dedications, Continued
Larry, agent 2631, had great things to say about drivers Rick Guile (Unit 3559A), Randy Cottingham (Unit 1036A), and
Tim Cunningham (Unit 5870), who hauled loads for BNSF recently. Rick, Randy and Tim were quick to respond about the
loads, had excellent communication, and were great to work with, according to Larry. Awesome job everyone!

Driver Marty Gallant (Unit 4565A) also received praises from a customer for a load he hauled in Ottawa, Canada recently.
The customer stated that Marty was one of the best drivers theyve worked with, and that he drove that rig through down-
town Ottawa like a baby carriage! They loved his professionalism and hope to work with him again. Nice job, Marty!

On Saturday July 22nd Freight Coordinator, Missy Swenson, met up in Albert Lea, MN with Norm Knight (Unit 5868) for
a visit. Albert Lea is Missys home town and it worked out perfectly for Missy to be able to meet up with him that day. Norm
was gracious enough to show her a lot of the ins and outs of his trailer and load securement. She was able to see how he checks
the axle weight, the points of contact, securement of the load to the trailer, and how the ratcheting chains work. He has a
spread axle trailer and he showed her how to open and close the axles as well. It was a very informative meeting and she said it
is great information to have, especially since she is a hands-on learner. Thank you to Norm for taking the time to explain all of
the equipment, and for taking the time to visit and have breakfast with one of the employees of Admiral.

Below are a few pictures from the visit with Norm

It is always great to hear that our drivers and agents are providing excellent customer service to our partners, and if you have
any stories, photos, or feedback on loads, we would be happy to feature them in the next Ships Log issue! Feel free to send
them to myself or to your assigned Freight Coordinator.

Thank you for all you do!

Our CSA Scores Can Be Fixed With Your Help
I believe that Admiral has some of the best, safest and most professional contractors in the business. I am
proud to be an Admiral employee and I am proud of our contractors. However, I am truly concerned about
one of our biggest challenges. I have written several articles about our CSA Vehicle Maintenance scores over
the last year. We are currently in the alert status and our score continues to climb to previously untouched
levels. Currently, our score is now 90%. Last month we were at 88%. Prior to this year, the highest score
Admiral had ever had was 86%. This means we have reached new highs or should I say new lows. As
Admirals Safety Director, this is certainly not something I am proud of.

So why does our score keep rising? I have done some research and found that the tail is wagging the dog. I
have listed some of the interesting facts below:

Our Final Warning Level threshold for Vehicle Maintenance points is 65.
Our Warning Level threshold for Vehicle Maintenance points is 40.
6 Admiral contractors/drivers have a score of 65 or more.
24 contractor/drivers have a score of between 40 and 65.
Of those 30 contractors/drivers, 12 have already been disqualified or cancelled because of those scores
6% of the Admiral driving force is at or above the probation level.
2% is at or above the Final Warning level.
Admiral has had 765 level 1 or level 2 inspections during the last 2 years.
421 of them resulted in no violations of any kind for the vehicle.
There were 344 inspections that did result in violations, but 247 of those are for 10 points or less.

What those facts tell us is that a very small percentage of our contractors are compiling the vast majority of the points. Most
roadside inspections of Admiral trucks are either clean or resulting in very few and minor violations. However, our scores
continue to rapidly climb due to a small number of contractors and a small number of catastrophic inspections. Because of that,
I am constantly hearing from drivers that the inspectors are developing an unfavorable opinion of Admiral and our drivers. We
must change this perception. I have instructed my team in the Safety Department to be proactive. We are closely examining the
DOT inspections you send in to look for indicators of vehicle issues in the near future such as tire tread depths that indicate
new tires will be needed soon. I am actively appealing any violations I can through the DataQ system and also verifying that we
are not accruing additional points through violation stacking. But we need you to be proactive too. Dont be afraid of having an
inspection as shown above, most of them end with no violations found. The more clean inspections we have, the better our
CSA scores. The violations we are seeing most often are for brakes, lights and tires. While there are times that a VM violation
may be unavoidable, we need your help to reduce them whenever possible. I also need you to help your fellow drivers. If you
see another Admiral driver with a light out, a loose strap or a damaged mud flap say something. You will help them avoid a
violation and help us all to build or reputation as true professionals.

Do not delay or postpone your maintenance! It will cost far less to keep the violations from occurring than it will to
correct them after accruing CSA points.
Conduct a thorough and consistent pre-trip inspection every day rain or shine.
Help your fellow drivers check their vehicles. Another pair of eyes helps them and you.
Turn in accurate and complete quarterly maintenance reports and inspections on time.
Take advantage of our vendors offers. Tire checks at TA/Petro Truck Stops including air as needed for less than $30.
Brake inspections are also available.
Check your lights every time you stop. Keep spare bulbs on hand to replace defective lights immediately.
Check your ABS indicators regularly. This is a common violation.

Admiral drivers are the best lets make sure our reputation is the same!

Notes From The Settlement, Processing & Billing Teams!
We have recently made some changes in order to make it easier for agents to view both pending and billed
loads. These can be easily accessed by simply clicking the OK icon on the truck console webpage (no cus-
tomer or trip number needs to be entered). Once you have accessed the load history screen, you will be able
to make changes to any load that is currently pending for processing (not billed). To make a change on a
pending load, simply click on the trip in question, re-enter the customer number for credit, and the system
will generate the information currently existing. Please do not create new trips for loads you have already
entered, as this creates a potential for confusion and improper processing. We are confident the changes
implemented will better support truck dispatching for all parties. If you have any questions please email issues@ammf.com or
call Dishon.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to complete your paperwork! Yes, it can be a process but in the long run, it pays

As new members join the Admiral team, we understand it can be overwhelming getting to know our processes as it may be dif-
ferent from previous carriers. With all of the paperwork, emails, orientation and getting information from our webpage, there
is a lot to learn. When in doubt, give us a call! Knowing you can contact us and actually talk to a person is a service we happily
provide.

The Settlement, Processing and Billing Teams are always here to help with questions regarding your paperwork, settlements, and
getting you to the right department with other concerns. We also want to make your transition smooth so your money keeps
flowing without any issues. Below is a reminder of all requirements in order to get paid and to keep things moving without delay.
This is also noted on the back side of your trip report, as well as in your contract agreement and on our webpage:

complete this with basic information from the Bill of Lading for each pick-up & delivery. This document should be signed
and dated by both the driver and the receiver. If the receiver refuses to sign off, make sure the bill of lading is signed and
clearly marked Received By.
3. Trip Report: If you are actively using an ELD device, complete the upper portion only of the trip report and note in the
body ELD. If you are not actively using an ELD device, you must complete the trip report entirely.
4. Fuel Receipts: You are only required to submit if you are not using your T-Card for fuel purchases.
5. Logs: If you are actively using an ELD device, you are not required to submit paper logs. If you are not actively using an ELD
device, you must submit logs up to the prior date.
Refer to the back side of your trip report for other required documents if applicable, and check all of your paperwork before
submitting. Writing your trip # and unit # on all documents helps the processing/billing teams complete their speedy process as
well. We want to get you paid quickly without any delays and extra phone calls!

Thank you for all you do!
