Course Outline for Drama

WCCHS Grade 7,8,&9 Drama Teacher: Mariah Besplug FALL 2017/2018

Course Objectives (General Outcomes) and the approximate class time spent on each

Orientation to Drama/ Warm-up Games 3 classes. (Orientation is the introduction of basic


concepts, skills and attitudes in drama, which should be addressed before commencing more in-
depth work in the other disciplines covered in the junior high program.)

Movement 3 classes. (Movement is non-verbal physical expression. The development of a


responsive and expressive body is enhanced when the movement elements of energy, focus and
control work together.)

Speech 3 classes. (Speech is the exploration of talking and speaking to meet the demands of
verbal communication. The focus of speech instruction in junior high is on the effective
communication of ideas, rather than on the technical aspects of speech.)

Improvisation 4 classes. (Improvisation/acting is the acting out of an idea or situation, using


spontaneous improvisation, planned improvisation and text.)

Theatre Technology 3 classes. (Technical theatre is the appropriate selection, construction,


and manipulation of those staging variables that visually and aurally support the performer and the
needs of the production.)

Remembrance Day Performance 5 classes (During this unit we will produce a visual
piece that will be presented at the Remembrance Day celebration in November.)

Grading
There are six units in this course. All six of these units will contribute evenly to the students grades.

Expectations:
Everyone will be responsible for his / her assignments and for meeting due dates and making
up for any missed work.
We are all expected to be in class on time. Anyone who disrespects the rights and time of
others (i.e. being late for class, disruptive, and so forth) will be expected to take responsibility for
their actions which may include a meeting with the teacher and or making up class time at lunch,
after school, or as otherwise arranged.
Anyone who misses a due date will be expected to complete those assignments after school or
at noon.
Anyone can bring water to class in a closed bottle. Please no food in class.
Because this course is largely based on participations there will be no cellphones allowed in
class. Students are expected to abide by the WCCHS Cellphone policy.
Everyone is expected to show RESPECT to all fellow classmates, staff, facilities and
equipment.
Everyone is expected to live within the policies stated in the WCCHS Handbook
