Statement on the murder of Gauri Lankesh

We as members of the academic fraternity feel deeply concerned about the cold-blooded murder of journalist and
social activist, Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru. Her murder is a threat to freedom of expression, to certain kinds of
activism and the right to engage with social and political actions.

Gauris career combined both a sense of vulnerability and courage, concern and activism which made the Gauri
Lankesh Patrike, a worthy successor of her fathers newspaper. We mourn her death but in the very act of
remembrance celebrate Gauris dedication and commitment to a wide variety of democratic struggles, whether tribal
rights, the fate of rationalists, Dalit representation, or media freedom.

As academics and social scientists, we believe that she was a model of a dissenting imagination ready to stand up to
the state and the communalisation of civil society. That spirit of hers needs to be honoured and sustained.
