Introduction & Theory
of Operation
‘The gas purity analyzer is used to determine
the trace amount of oxygen content in argon.
‘This manual describes the method of using
the analyzer.
‘The test functions on the reaction between
oxygen in the sample argon and the tungsten
Slament in a clear 100 watt electric light
.. Oxygen, if present, will combine wit
the heated tungsten filament to form a
‘tungsten oxide coating on the filament from
which the oxygen content can be determined.
‘The accuracy and sensitivity of the argon gas
analyzer at the low range (ie 20 PPM or less)
is normally plus or -20%.Argon Purity Analyzer J-28

Safety Precautions
1. Never connect the gas purity analyzer
directly to a gas cylinder or pipeline.
Always use a regulator.
2, Safety glasses must be worn by the
operator when using the analyzer.
3. For further protection, cover the bulb
with a clear plastic cover, The type
used with photographic flash equipment
is suitable.
Do not exceed 5 PSI gas pressure within
the bulb.
‘Samples which contain more than 200
Parts per million of oxygen will burn out
the lamp.‘Argon Purity Analyzer J-2B

Preliminary Preparation
ease
1. Prepare the test lamp as follows: Break
off the tip of one ofthe glass tube ends
so that air ean slowly enter the bulb
through the capillary. Break the two
glass tubes at the major construction.
‘To do this, score the glass with a file
and rap it sharply, Be sure to protect
your hands while performing

Screw the test bulb into its socket and
connect both tubes to the short lengths
of gun rubber tubing. Slide the tubing
onto the glass tube enough to ensure no
Jeaks at the connections.
Connect the gas sampling hose from the
toto ting ote anaguet ime
to the fitting of the analyzer. The valve
is located in the plastic dome next to
the exhaust valve, On the "VC" vacuum
models, be sure that there are no
vacuums being pulled on the chamber
at the time of sampling. The flowmeter
must be set for a flow of at least 5 CFH
and no more than 15 CFN, the exhaust
valve ball must be off the valve seat.
»
fore the sampling needle valve on until
ite seat is in the open position.
Positive pressure in the chamber will
allow the argon to flow into the
analyzer when the analyzer solenoid
valve opens.
Purge the tost lamp by placing the
switch from to “purge’, The
solenoid valve wl open and the
“purging gas on” indicating lamp (red
lamp), will ght and tho argon

interior of the control,
After two minutes, but no more than
four minutes, put the switch into the
“off’ position, and into the “flash”
Position. In the “flash” position, a high-
voltage will be placed across the
filament of the test bulb and burn off
any impurity that may be on the
it. Do not hold the switch in the
flash position for more than one second.
‘The above procedure is used when the
unitis first put into service, when it has
been out of service for a period of time,
or when a new test lamp is used.‘Argon Purity Analyzer J-2B

Operation
1. With the analyzer purged of all the air,
put the mode switch from ‘off’ to the
the duration is controlled by a timer.
2, When the five minute timer times out,
the argon solencid valve will clos,
stopping the flow of argon. The “pur;
gas on” light will go off, and a ae
‘voltage will be applied to the filament of
the test lamp for ane minute. The test
Observe the discoloration of the
‘tungsten filament and compare it to the
chart below.
If no discoloration appears, a final
observation is made by burning the bulb
at 90 volts for one second by pressing
the mode switch to “flash”. If a wisp of
smoke is observed to come aff the
filament, oxygen is present in excess of
7 PPM. If no smoke is observed,

the heated filament to the argon in the
