1. Explain the basic principle of Regenerative breaking and control, Rheostatic


Breaking control and combine break control in detail.
2. Write a short note on single phase separately excited drives.
3. Write a short note on Single phase series DC motor drives.

drives, Microcomputer control of DC drives and explain any two in detail.

26. Explain the basic principal of operation of an inductive motor with reference to its equivalent
circuit. And also explain the induction motor performance characteristics.
27. State and discuss the various method of speed control of induction motor. And also discuss
briefly the stator voltage control scheme of induction motor with its speed torque curves.
28. Discuss the variable frequency control method of an induction motor also explain operation
for two different modes,(1) operation below the rated frequency (2) operation above the rated
frequency.
29. Draw the circuit diagram and explain the operation of rotor resistance control using chopper.
And derive an expression or the torque for the rotor resistance control using the chopper
scheme.

Examples:

a. Single phase fully controlled bridge converter supplies an inductive load, assuming
that the output current is virtually constant and equal to Id. Determine the following
performance measures, if supply voltage is 200V and if the firing angle is maintained
at 60. So, find...(a) Average output voltage, (b) supply RMS current, (c) supply
fundamental RMS current, (d)fundamental power factor, (e) supply power factor, (f)
supply harmonic factor, (g)voltage ripple factor.
b. The reverse recovery time of diode is 4 micro-second and the rate of fall of the diode
current is 20A/ micro-second. Determine (i) the storage charge QRR and (ii) the peak
reverse current IRR.
c. For a single phase half converter with purely resistive load and delay angle 900
determine (i) the rectification efficiency, (ii) the form factor (FF), (iii) the ripple factor
(RF), (iv) the TUF, and (v) the PIV of thyristor.
d. A DC Chopper operates on 230 V dc and frequency of 400Hz; feed an R-L load.
Determine the ON time of the chopper for output of 150 V.
e. Calculate the number of SCRs , each with rating of 600 V, 50 A required in each
branch of a series and parallel combination for a circuit with the total voltage and
current rating of 7.5 kV and 800 A. Assume derating factor of 15%.
f. A single phase semi converter is operated from 120 V, 50 Hz ac supply. The load
resistance is 10 . If the average output voltage is 25% of the maximum possible
average output voltage, determine: (i) Firing angle (ii) rms and average output current.
g. The voltage and current rating in a particular circuit are 3kV and 750A. SCRs with a
rating of 800V and 175A are available. The recommended minimum derating factor is
15%. Calculate the number of series and parallel units required. Also, obtain the
required values of R and C to be used in the static and dynamic equalising cuircuits if
the maximum forward leakage current for the SCRs is 10mA and Q = 20C.
h. Five thyristors, each of 500V and 500A are used in series and parallel circuit of 2kV
and 1.8kA. Calculate voltage and current derating factor.
