ABSTRACT

Concrete is a mixture of Portland cement, sand, gravel and water that is

generally used in various applications in the construction industry like roads,

footings, slabs, beams, columns, etc. The conventional concrete uses one

commercial size depending on where it is applied. In this study, two commercial

gravel sizes were combined in one concrete mixture as a possible solution to a

problem on gravel availability during an ongoing construction which then led to

questions on whether it is possible to combine two commercial gravel sizes

considering that there sizes were not from the other in one concrete mix and would it

meet the standard strength required by the conventional concrete. In this effect, a

laboratory test was performed in order to determine the effects of curing, mixture

ratio and combined gravel ratio on the compressive strength of the resulting

concrete sample. A standard compressive strength test procedure was performed in

the preparation and testing of the concrete cylinders molded from the field. The

resulting data from the experiments were aimed to give guidance on which

commercial gravel sizes were possible to be combined for applications limited to the

mix proportion and gravel combinations ratio specified in this study to ensure that

the resulting concrete meet the quality for which it is designed.
