INTRODUCTION

I Anshima Mathur, student of B.A.LL.B(HONS.) 2nd year would like to pay my sincere
gratitude towards the faculty members of Prestige Institute (Dept. of Law) for arranging our
Summer Internship at High Court of Indore and various other District Courts.
PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP

The purpose of the internship was to understand the working of a court, the nature of duties
of the Judicial officers. The internship was to help us understand the role of court in
dispensing justice in any case, the role of prosecutors in a case, the way cases proceed in a
court, the way judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers handle the case, the relationship of
the prosecutors and the police. This give us an opportunity to understand the actual need of
co-ordination in the four pillars of the criminal justice system.

The purpose of the internship as told by our college were:

To understand the working of a court.

The nature of duties of the Judicial officers.
To help us understand the role of court in dispensing justice in any case.
Filing of chargesheet.
The way Judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers handle the case.
EXPERIENCE

It was an great experience being an intern at High Court, I have an enough knowledge of the

functioning of High Court which is very helpful for now and as well as for future. The first

half of most of the days used to hear different trials brought from the lower courts and the

second half used to have discussion with my advocates and files of the cases in which

witnesses were brought in particular were given to read by my advocate.

Attending the court and watching the proceedings on a regular basis helped me learn
provisions of different legislation. Being in my 2nd Year, I got a rough idea of the major and
most frequently used sections of the CrPC, IPC,and The Indian Evidence Act,1872
Provisions of other acts like The SC And The ST(Prevention of Atrocities) Act ,1989 , The
Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, The
Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and other such acts were also learnt to some extent.

Apart from this, viewing the proceedings gave a practical knowledge about advocacy
skills ,the manner of pleading in the court, how to be prepared for answering the questions
put by the Honble judge in the court and how to conduct witness examination in a manner
favourable to the case.
I got to learn a lot, as they say directly from the Horses Mouth regarding strategies to be
taken while defending a client and the general court courtesy.
The internship was one of its kind. It made me learn really lots of legal related topics, much
more just than my course as a 2nd Year law student. The internship tenure was much of a
learning process which helped me immensely to add to my knowledge base as a budding
individual in the legal fraternity.
Sometimes even a lot of reading of the case files and critical aspects of it created mind blocks
at the initial stage. Also getting the files during the busy court days was a herculean task. Still,
the learning made up for it as it left pure joy at the end of the fruitful and really professional
time spent out there.
