Earthquakes are something difficult for us to understand here in Georgia because
we dont experience it firsthand. They have always intrigued me which helps create my excitement for this lesson and activity. Overall, this lesson went really well. The students were able to design and construct structures to withstand a simulated earthquake. The students also had plenty of time to adjust and rework their structure if there was a failure. Where it went a little crazy.allergies, or should I say a confused student. We know all of our allergies and always have alternative materials for students to use. We get into the lab and a student starts freaking out that he is going to swell up because he is allergic to marshmallow and gelatin. We instantly double check with the nurse and contact his mom. He is positive he is allergic to these foods and is a bright, AC student. Well, after speaking to mom, it is not an allergy at all, he doesnt ingest these items for religious reasons. We explained to him that he wasnt eating them and touching them would be ok, per mom, and he would not swell up. Whew!!! Crisis adverted! The lesson was successful because students used hands on models and were able to make adjustments after trials. The students were successful working in their groups and able to complete the STEM packet that goes with this lesson. I will use this lesson again, allergies and all!
