OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

MODEL SP-24 COMPACTOR

The Model SP-24 ;s a hydrostatically driven walk behind vibratory
roller. The drum and drive wheel are driven simultaneously to
achieve maximum traction. The drum vibration is accomplished
through a belt drive and manual clutch, drum bearings are operated
in oil and do not require greasing. A water system ;s standard
equipment for use on asphalt.

FUEL CAPACITY: 1.5 gallons
HYDRAULIC OIL CAPACITY 10 gallons
WATER CAPACITY: 10 gallons
BEFORE OPERATION
1. Check hydraul ic oil reservoir', remove dipstick located on
top of tank, refill with Sun Hydraulic Oil #2105, V. I. 170
or equivalent.
BEFORE OPERATION (Cont'd.)
2. Check oil level of drum bearing reservoir by rotating drum
until index, which is welded to inside edge of drum diameter,
is at the 12 o'clock position. The oil level plug should be
30 below the center line of the drum. Remove plug and fill
from upper plug until oil flows from oil level plug, use SAE
#90 mineral oil.

3. Check oil level of drum drive gear box. Remove oil level plug
and fill through upper filler until oil flows from oil level,
fill with SAE #90 mineral oil.
4. Check oil level of engine and refill if necessary. Refer to
engine manual for lubricant required for specific temperature
range.
5. Check belt tension of vibration drive. Adjust if necessary-
Do not allow belts to whip or slip excessively.
6. Fill fuel tank with regular grade of gasoline for Wisconsin
engine. Use #2 Diesel Fuel for Diesel Engine.
INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
Travel Control - This lever with a unified control system regu-
lates both the direction and speed of travel. The further the
handle is moved from the neutral position, the faster the vehicle
will travel in that direction. Caution - lever must be placed
in neutral position when starting and stopping engine. If
roller creeps when control is in neutral, it will be necessary
to adjust control cable.
Throttle Control - Located on engine shroud of Wisconsin engine
and a lever assembly on Hatz diesel engine. Move control to end
of travel when preparing unit for operation. Consult engine
manual for further details.
Water Control - This valve controls the flow of water to drum
and tire assembly. System;s a gravity feed. Normal operation
does not require the need for water. It is only necessary when
compacting asphalt in order to keep drum and tire free from
asphalt.
Pump Release Located on side of transmission pump. Depress
button to disengage pump assembly. This is exceptionally help-
ful in cold weather starting on the Hatz diesel engine. Upon
starting of engine pump release button will automatically return
to its normal position.
Vibration Control - T~e vibration is controlled by a manual clutch
located on the left slde of the machine. Moving lever inward
engages clutch assembly. Outward movement disengages.
MAINTENCE
DRUM BEARINGS: Check oil level of drum bearing resev;or
by rotating drum until index,(which is welded to inside
of edge of drum diameter, non drive side) ;s at the
12 o'clock position. The oil level plug should be 300
below the center line of the drum. Remove plug and fill
from upper plug until oil flows from oil level plug. Use
.SAE #90 Mineral Oil. Check oil every week, change oil
every 500 hours.

MAINTENANCE
LUBRICATION: (Pressure Gun Fittings) Use multipurpose grease
to lubricate the following points:
(a) Pivot wheel (lube every 200 Hrs.) . . . 1 fitting
(b) Jack shaft (lube every 100 hrs.) 1 fitting
(c) Frame bearing (lube every 1,000 hrs.) 1 fitting
(non drive side)
HYDRAULIC OIL RESERVOIR: Remove dipstick which is attached
to the filter plug located on top of tank, to check hydraulic
oil level. Fill with Sun Hydraulic Oil #2105, V.I. 170 or
equivalent.
FUEL TANK: Fill using a good brand of fuel procured from a
reliable company, handled in clean containers. Use #2 Diesel
Fuel for diesel engine and regular grade of gas for the gaso-
line engine. The fuel tank should be filled at the end of
each day to prevent condensation forming in tank.
HYDRAULIC SUMP FILTER: One filter is located inside hydraulic
reservoir at pump suction hose. Remove and clean every 500
hours of operation. To service filter, remove cover from
hydraulic reservoir. Remove drain plug from reservoir and
thoroughly drain. Remove filter and clean in an industrial
solvent. A stiff fiber brush may be used to remove any
particles that may have become imbedded. Clean out all dirt
and sludge from the bottom of the reservoir. Refill with
clean hydraulic oil outlined under HYDRAULIC OIL RESERVOIR.
HYDRAULIC RETURN FILTER: Located at the right hand corner
of hydraulic reservoir. Remove and replace filter cartridge
(part no. 50276732) every 300 hours; frequency may have to
be adjusted dependent upon operating conditions.
V-BELTS: Inspect V-Belt tension, do not allow belts to
slip. If adjustment is necessary, loosen anchor bolts;
adjust tension using jack bolts. Be certain pulleys are free
from dirt and are aligned when inspecting belts.
WATER SYSTEM: Clean sprinkler spray bar periodically to
maintain maximum flow of water to drums. Sprinkler bars are
mounted over drum to coat drums when unit ;s used for asphalt
compacting.
CLUTCH: The vibration is controlled by a manual clutch. This
clutch may be adjusted by loosening lock screw on split
adjuster. Turn adjuster just enough, allowing pulley to turn
freely. Tighten lock screw to secure adjuster. Keep sliding
surface of clutch lubricated with general purpose grease to
ensure smooth operation of shifter collar.
