Biology Honors Assignment: Cancer and Health

1. Cancer is a disease that can be passed down genetically or can occur with

doing anything tobacco related, and can kill an individual and has no cure

and can occur around the entire human body.

2. The way cancer develops is by a change in a cells genetic material and

primes the cell to become cancerous. The cancer cells grow into the

surrounding tissue and will eventually travel and spread through the

bloodstream. Mitosis is the division of cells and when the cells begin to

rapidly divide, they can possibly create tumors that then become

cancerous and cancer cells and cancer cells will break off from the tumor

and spread through the body via bloodstream.

3. Metastasis is the development of secondary malignant growths at a

distance from a primary state of cancer. First, Metastasis will occur

through an introduction, as an infiltration of tumor cells will infiltrate the

adjacent tissue. Secondly, in a mechanism of call invasion will have cancer

cells continue to invade the tissue possibly in a cluster, and individually.

Lastly, in endothelial transmigration, the cancer cells will enter the

bloodstream, becoming the cancers main transportation throughout the

body.
4. Cancers that have been related and linked to poor nutrition and obesity

are esophagus, pancreas, colon/rectum, breast, endometrium, kidney,

thyroid, and gall bladder cancers. These are all linked to poor nutrition

and obesity because of several reasons. First, fat tissues can produce large

amounts of estrogen, which can lead strait to Endometrium cancer.

Secondly, a large amount od insulin levels are found in the blood stream

can lead up to cardiovascular disease. Next, fat tissues are very capable of

producing cancer hormones. Lastly, chronic low-level and inflammation

can cause several types of arthritis.

5. The ethnicities that are most common to have esophagus, pancreas,

colon/rectum, breast, endometrium, kidney, thyroid, and gall bladder

cancers are Caucasian, non-Hispanic, and African American.

6. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent of delay types of cell

damage. This can lower the chance of rapid mitosis growth from

occurring. Foods and diets are commonly linked to low levels of cancer

risk, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Lutein, Selenium,

Lycopene, and Beta-Carotene.

7. Genetics, stress, lifestyle, and environmental factors can also relate to

cancer and its levels of risks. Genetics contribute to cancer because

different types of cancer can be genetically passed down in certain

families. Lifestyle influences cancer and its risks such as smoking

(Tobacco) , which caused over one hundred million deaths world wide.

Environmental factors can lead to cancer as well such as second hand

smoking, the industrialization of a city/region, and what is traveling

through the air in into our lungs.

8. Patient 001. Is an American-Indian/Alaskan female who has two aunts

that have/had breast cancer? American-Indians smoke more than any

other ethnic group due to spiritual and social norms. The most common

cancers for American-Indians are Breast, Colon/Rectum, and Lung cancer.

Also, they have high levels of cervical cancer mortality. The third leading

cause of death for American-Indians is cancer, in many forms. The

American-Indian community has a higher rate of tobacco use than any

other community. The patient has low levels of antioxidant intake that

raises her risk of cancer, as well as having a possible genetic line to breast

cancer.
