Date: 8 September, 2017 Duration of lesson: 80 minutes

Age Group: 11-12 Form: 1 Adams

Subject: Mathematics Topic: Solving one step equations

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

1. Solve one step equations by the balance method

2. Use a balance scale to model one step equations

3. Create a rule to solve one step equations given their experiences with the balance scale.

TEACHING STRATEGIES/METHODS:

Discussion, Questioning, Demonstration

RESOURCES/TECHNOLOGY:

Laptop with SmartNotebook for the teacher

Multimedia projector

SmartBoard

14 laptops with flash installed

SET INDUCTION:

The teacher will project a Smart Note book page containing a balance scale manipulative as

shown below. The teacher will ask the students to identify the object shown on the SmartBoard.
A student will volunteer to come to the front of the class and manipulate the balance scale. The

class will be questioned regarding what happens as weight is added or removed from each side.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES/EXPERIENCES:

Students will review the concept of zero pairs (+1 and -1 equals 0)
Students will go to the mathplayground website to access the balance scale manipulative.
Students will watch as the teacher demonstrates how to use the website.
Students will begin to model and solve one step equations using the balance scale.
Students will solve one step equations using the concept of zero pairs to keep the scale balance.
(whatever they do to one side of the scale must be immediately done to the other side to keep the
scale balance)
Students will work in Tutorial mode where the software will provide scaffolding as they work to
build models and solve equations.
Students will then work in Practice mode where the software provides less scaffolding to build
models and solve equations.
Students will use their experiences with the balance scale to build a rule to solve equations.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES:

The students will complete a computerized exercise

CLOSURE:

Recap the concept of an equation functions as a balance scale. What is done to the left side of the

equation must be done to the right to keep the scale balanced.

EVALUATION:

During the lesson the teacher will traverse the classroom and interact with the students as the
model their equations.

Were there any difficulties using the problem solving software or the drill and practice software?

Did the use of the problem solving software assist students with visualizing how to solve
equations?

The teacher will check the results from the computerized assessment to indicate if the students
were correctly able to solve one step equations. The results will guide the teacher in preparing
the next lesson.
