1. Scope:
This procedure stipulates the requirements for MT (Magnetic Particle Testing) of critical welds of
bulk storage tanks and thickness measurement of random points on tank shell.
2. Inspection Personnel:
Competent personnel with relevant qualification and recent result of medical fitness shall be used
for carrying out the Test.
3. Inspection/Test Procedure:
This inspection shall be carried out at a height above 2meters and therefor all safety requirements
shall be strictly adhered to by both technicians, responsible persons and client representatives.
Scaffolds shall be erected at strategic points encircling the tanks to ensure easy access and reach
to technicians, so as to make for safe working conditions and timeliness of service delivery.
It is the duty of technicians to carry out a full pre-job daily job hazard identification and analysis
to ascertain the condition of the work site prior to carrying out their jobs. This is in addition to the
risk assessment issued which may/should be reviewed as the need may arise. Technicians are
advised to be on full PPE at all times and also utilize appropriate fall protection apparatus.
I. Tools/Materials.
Aerosols: White contrast paint & Black indicator ink (all of the same manufacturer) shall be
used.
Electric buffing machine, wire brush & chipping hammers shall also be used.
settlement. The magnet shall be placed at angles between 45 - 90 and rotated both
ways to ensure detection of all possible indications, noting that only indications which
are perpendicular to the axis of the magnet.
c) Evaluation
Surface discontinuities will produce indications, however localized surface
irregularities due to machining or other surface conditions may give false indications.
For the purpose of this inspection inspections to be looked out for will be majorly
cracks and all linear indications with a dimension greater than 1.6mm. Round
indications & clusters of round indications, especially due to pitting shall also be
considered as relevant.
All indications as described above shall be deemed relevant and regarded as defect
until it is shown by re-examination by the same technique or other NDT methods
and/or by surface conditioning that no such relevant indications exist.
d) Acceptance Criteria
The following indications shall strictly be regarded as defects.
All forms of cracks
Relevant linear indications.
Round indications with a dimension greater than 4.8mm
Clusters of 4 or more round indications
e) Repairs
The defects may be removed by grinding or chipping. If subsequent repair welding is
not required, the area shall be blended with the surrounding area to avoid sharp
notches. If surface requires weld filling, the filled surface after welding shall be
treated to achieve its regular status.
III. Thickness Gauging Procedure
a) Surface Preparation:
The area/surface to be inspected shall be clean and free form loose scale, paint and
surface irregularities.
b) Test/Observation
In order to avoid incorrect readings, the technician must ensure the geometry of the
area under test shall be parallel or concentric if possible. Measurements for areas
with non-parallel surfaces must be carefully examined and re-examined to ascertain
correctness of reading. All limitations due to configuration must be duly reported.
c) Evaluation/Acceptance Criteria
Results shall be evaluated against minimum allowable thickness as provided or
recommended by client and tank manufacturer.

5. Reporting
The examination reports shall be prepared and duly signed by inspector in the format as attached.
