Exam Topics, By Unit

Units #1 - Matter, Chemical Trends and Bonding

- atomic structure
- Lewis Diagrams for elements, ionic compounds and molecular (covalent)
compounds
- average atomic mass and isotopes
- periodic trends - atomic radius, ionization energy (relate these to chemical
reactivity)
- using electronegativity values, determine bond type
- properties of ionic and molecular (covalent) compounds
- polar bonds and molecules vs. non - polar bonds and molecules
- using Lewis Diagrams, determine polarity of a molecule and shape

Unit # 2- Chemical Reactions

- identify types of chemical reactions (synthesis, decomposition, SD, DD,

combustion)
- balance chemical equations
- predict products of chemical reactions
- given a word description of a chemical reaction, write a balanced chemical
equation

Unit #3 - Quantities in Chemical Reactions

- define the mole

- calculate number of particles, moles, mass etc.
- determine percentage composition of a compound
- empirical vs. molecular formula
- determine through calculation the empirical and/or molecular formula of a
compound
- stoichiometry - mole to mole ratios, mass to mass problems, limiting reactant
problems
- actual yield vs. theoretical yield
- calculate the percentage yield of a chemical reaction
Unit #4 - Solutions and Solubility

- understand which types of solutes dissolve in which types of solvents (like

dissolves like)
- explain the dissolving process of an ionic compound (dissociation) and a polar
molecule in a polar solvent
- use the solubility table to determine the solubility of ionic compounds
- write total and net ionic equations for a chemical reaction involving ions
(determine the spectator ions)
- calculate the molarity of a specific ion in solution (stoich)
- dilute vs. concentrated solution - use dilution formula to perform calculations
- describe the effects of temperature and pressure on the solubility of gases
- state the main characteristics of acids and bases
- determine pH of a solution given the concentration of a strong acid
- neutralization reactions
- perform calculations related to neutralization reactions (stoich)

Combined Gas Law
- perform calculations using the above laws
- perform calculations using the ideal gas law
- law of combining volumes - (volume to volume ratio from a balanced chemical
equation)
- gas law stoich

Studying Suggestions

Create a word list for each unit

Create a formula sheet for the course
Create problem solving maps for major problems (e.g. limiting reactant
questions)
Make corrections to your unit tests and review multiple choice errors
Study only 1 or 2 units at one sitting; take breaks while studying to avoid
burning out
Do the practice exam (available online)
Get lots of sleep and be sure to eat breakfast the morning of the exam
AVOID excessive caffeine (e.g. coffee, Red Bull) the night before or day of the
exam
AVOID pulling an all nighter!
