1. Goal

The Blind flange, drawing #16175-1100.06_B, will be used under ASME VIII-1
service. This flange cannot be calculated to ASME VIII-1 code rules due to the
complexity of its geometry and considered as internal part of the Designed pressure
vessel. The rules of VIII-2 are used with VIII-1 allowed stresses to determine the
acceptability of the flange.

2. Summary Conclusions:

Materials:

Material strength properties used in this report are obtained from ASME IID, Table1A and
Table 3. Stress classification limits are calculated to VIII-2 rules using ASME IID allowable
for VIII-1. Properties are shown for the SA-516 G70 carbon steel flange.

Model information:

The model used in this report represents 1/4 of the flange. A 2nd order, tetrahedral solid mesh
has been refined to 5[mm] to reduce the reported error to less than 5% for general areas

Restraints & Loads

All cut plane surfaces are restrained using symmetry. Bolts are simulated using the
SolidWorks Simulation connector utility (Simplified Boundary Conditions). These bolts hold
the flange in the seated position. Flange loads are calculated and applied to the effective
gasket area. The flange is internally pressurized to 10 [Bar]. The model is restrained in all
directions and rigid body motion is prevented

Results

Through the FEA we found a 0.92mm maximum displacement.

All general membrane stresses are below the 137.9 [MPa] general allowable. All local
membrane stresses have been proven acceptable after linearization. All stresses are below
their respective membrane allowables.

The membrane +Bending stresses are above the 206 [MPa] general allowable. The flange
design is not acceptable and Partition Plate thickness must be increased to 40-41 [mm].

Analysis Conclusion:

The flange doesnt meet ASME VIII-2 design rules using VIII-1 allowed stresses. The flange
design is not acceptable.

1. Given Design Variables

a. The partition plate thickness is 42 mm; outer diameter of the shell is 762 mm:

The dimensions are taken from drawing 16175-1100.06_B.

Material for the partition plate is SA-516 G70 this is an austenitic-ferritic steel .

Material properties taken from ASME Section II partD, at ambient temperature:

Elasticity E = 202000 [MPa]

Poisson ratio v = 0.3

Min. yield Sy = 206 [MPa]

2. Bolt Boundary Conditions and Finite Element Set-up:

Bolts are M27, defined separately with simplified boundary conditions:

1. B.C#1 - Polar Coordinate system

Where:

2. B.C#2- Cartesian Coordinate system for Head cup of the bolt :

Where:

3. B.C#3-Virtual Wall as effective gasket area

4
3. Mesh Accuracy

The model used in this report represents 1/4 of the flange and cylindrical
Shell.
A 2nd order, tetrahedral solid mesh has been refined to 5[mm] to reduce the
reported error to less than 5% for general areas.
A 2nd order, 2D Triangular shell elements used for cylindrical Shell

5
A view of the error plot capped at 5% with the mesh overlaid. A global mesh size of
15[mm] was used for the entire model. Error exceeding the 5% is located at bolt heads,
areas of applied loads and areas of discontinuity. The error is acceptable and the model
may be used for results

Comments:

a. Refer to VIII-2 Table AD-150.1forkvalues

b. The thermal expansion coefficient is only required for studies including thermal
stresses
c. Refer to VIII-2 App 4-130 and following for the Pm, Pl, Q and F stress limits
d. Refer to VIII-2 App 4-130 Table 4-120.1forthecorrect application of the
calculated stress limits

5. FEA Results

a. Displacement plot of deformed model

The displacement plot shows the greatest deformation at the center of the plate (0.92mm).
As the deformation should be limited to max. 2mm, this is acceptable.

8
b. Equivalent stress plot (cross section shown)

The maximum equivalent stress in the model is 241[MPa]. It is present in the partition
plate local stress concentration into Drill Hole , and in the bolt heads, areas of
applied loads and areas of discontinuity with Error above 5%. (See plane cross section).
To evaluate the stresses a number of cross sections are defined for Stress Linearization.

OK Risk

1. Based on the results, all primary membrane stresses are acceptable. No Risk
2. Based on the results, Primary membrane + Primary bending stresses are not
acceptable - Risk

The Partition Plate must be increased to 41 mm thickness
