1st Term 2017-2018

Part I. Write the meaning of the following acronyms: (10 pts)

1. LGU Local Government Unit
2. MMDA Metropolitan Manila Development Authority
3. 3Rs Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
4. EGF Environmental Guarantee Fund
5. MRF Materials Recovery Facility

Part II. Answer the following questions: (10 pts each)

SOLID WASTES and HAZARDOUS WASTES

1. Differentiate the terms reuse, recycle and reclaim. Give 2 major benefits of recycling. Give examples for each benefit. Explain what is MRF?

Reuse Action or practice of using something again for its original purpose
Recycle Process of converting waste materials into reusable materials and objects
Reclaim To bring into a condition for cultivation or other use
2 Major Benefits of Recycling: Pollution reduction, Resource/Energy conservation
A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) specializes in the separation and preparation of either clean or wet solid waste that are generated by
residential and commercial sources.

2. What are the classification of solid and hazardous wastes? HINT: What is Class A to Class F in RA9003 and RA6969?
Classification of Solid Wastes
- Household wastes
- Commercial-industrial wastes
- Farm and agricultural wastes
- Institutional wastes
- Mining wastes
- Hazardous wastes
- Miscellaneous wastes:
Residues of sewage treatment plants
Street sweepings debris caused by disasters
Large wastes (e.g. construction rubble)
Dead animals
Ash from incinerators and residues from the combustion of solid fuels
Classifications of Hazardous Wastes
-
Plating wastes - Textile
- Acid wastes - Putrescible/ Organic wastes
- Alkali wastes - Containers
- Inorganic Chemical wastes - Immobilized wastes
- Reactive Chemical wastes - Organic Chemicals
- Paints/Latices/Ink/Dyes - Miscellaneous wastes
- Organic Solvents - Oil

3. What are the 4 characteristics of hazardous wastes?

Characteristics of Hazardous Wastes:
- Toxicity
- Ignitibility
- Corrosivity
- Reactivity

4. What are the components of a Hazardous Waste Management Plan? What is a manifesto? What is the function of manifesto in hazardous waste
paradigm?
Premises that conduct on-site disposal of hazardous wastes
Commercial or industrial hazardous waste incinerators
Landfills, dumps or tips that accept hazardous waste disposal
Premises that recycle or reprocess hazardous waste
Premises that immobilize, encapsule, polymerize or treat hazardous waste
Premises that store hazardous wastes
A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or
government.

Introduction to Environmental Engineering
1st Term 2017-2018

EPAs hazardous waste manifest system is designed to track hazardous waste from the time it leaves the generator facility where it was
produced, until it reaches the off-site waste management facility that will store, treat or dispose of the hazardous waste.

5. What are the components of Hazardous Wastes Paradigm? Define and explain the regulatory requirements for each component.

Waste Generators - All waste generators shall provide the government the information on the type and quantity of waste generated, produced
or transported outside
Hazardous Waste Storage and Labeling - Vessels, containers, and tanks for the storage of hazardous waste shall be clearly labeled according
to class or classes, subcategory, waste number, name and address of generator, and maximum capacity of volume
Treatment and Disposal - No waste shall accept, treat recycle, reprocess, or dispose of hazardous wastes unless done in the premises as
prescribed and permitted by the government
Import and Export - Any person who wishes to import into the Philippines or export hazardous substances must seek and obtain prior written
approval from the government

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted
rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
- ARISTOTLE
