EMC improves productivity, cost savings, and

deployment of Exchange Server 2003

EMC Knows Exchange

Some of the largest e-mail systems in the world run on EMC technology. EMC delivers
networked storage solutions with a tiered storage approach and service level options to
manage the information lifecycle of a customers Exchange environment. These solutions
take into account the value to the business of e-mail at any point in time.

As e-mail becomes evermore critical to business, your Exchange environment demands

higher service levels that require dependability, productivity, connectivity, and the best
value possible. EMC Proven solutions, coupled with Microsoft Exchange 2003, meet the
requirements of the most demanding Exchange environments. Furthermore, EMC can help
ease the difficulty of migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange Server 2003 and minimize
the disruption to your e-mail users.

Exchange Server 2003 is optimized to work with the new capabilities of Windows Server
2003 to deliver best-in-class reliability for customers while reducing TCO and delivering an
enhanced e-mail messaging solution. This is accomplished by simplifying management
and deployment. These areas of focus for Microsofts new 2003 products are the same
areas where EMC has been helping customers for many yearsimproving employee
productivity, reducing infrastructure cost, and helping to deploy applications more easily
and quickly.
Productivity Gains
Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) is Microsofts API for handling backup and restore
operations. Many are proclaiming that this is the reason to upgrade from Windows NT to
Windows 2003 and from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. It handles everything necessary
to get a clean, consistent, point-in-time copy of a database, application, or object and
helps remedy online backup problems. EMC has replication technology that integrates with
VSS resulting in a backup and restore solution fully supported by Microsoft. Microsoft has
leveraged EMCs engineering experience by integrating replication technology with
Microsoft applications in the development of VSS. Also, Recovery Storage Group, a new
feature in Exchange Server 2003, simplifies the process of restoring a corrupted or deleted
database. Its key benefit is that it reduces the need for a separate recovery server and
makes it easier to restore lost individual mailboxes and e-mails. This feature, coupled with
EMC Automated Networked Storage and disk-based replicas (see below), will enable you
to recover a mailbox in minutes. Below is the value that EMC products provide to Exchange:

SnapView Integration Module for Exchange: Provides simplified, non-disruptive backup

and automated recovery for EMCs CLARiiON platform.

TimeFinder Exchange Integration Module (TEIM): Provides simplified, non-disruptive

backup and recovery for EMCs Symmetrix platform.

EMC Replication Manager (ERM): Automated management of disk-based replicas for

applications running on Windows Server 2003, including Exchange and SQL Server.

GeoSpan: GeoSpan for Microsoft Cluster Service provides a unique geographically

dispersed cluster solution. Clustering with GeoSpan helps avoid unplanned downtime
with integration between MSCS and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF).

VisualSRM: File-level monitoring, reporting, and browsing with drill-down, and folder-
walking for all Exchange applications. Have a PST problem? VisualSRM can be used to locate
them on your network, remind users of local PST policies, and even delete them if need be.

EMC Centera content addressed storage provides an ideal solution that offers content
authenticity for e-mail archive data. The Centera product rounds out the full suite of products
and services that helps EMC customers realize the importance of cost effectively and intelli-
gently managing all Exchange information from creation to archiving and disposal.
Infrastructure Cost Savings
Multiple database architecture in Exchange 2003 improves performance
and availability
Each Exchange 5.5 server was limited to one main mailbox database. If it grew too large, it
became too time consuming and unproductive to administer backup and restore
processes. As a consequence, many organizations limited the number of user mailboxes
and the size limits associated with each Exchange 5.5 server.

Database management is vastly improved with Exchange Server 2003 (and Exchange
2000): up to four storage groups and five stores per storage group combine to create the
availability of 20 separate databases per Exchange server. Multiple databases enable
greater flexibility in spreading out mailboxes for performance load balancing, higher
availability, and making backup and restore faster and easier. With Exchange 2003, only
one database and mailbox need to be recovered, making the process quick, easy, more
productive, and without downtime impact for the rest of the Exchange users.

Reduce hardware, software, and administration costs

Exchange 2003 can accommodate more users per server than Exchange 5.5. Exchange 5.5
customers typically have about 1,000 to 2,000 users per server, depending upon factors
such as user profiles, messages per day, and mailbox size limits. Enhanced performance and
the multiple database design in Exchange 2003 increases capacity to 3,500 to 5,000 or more
users per server. These advances in Exchange Server 2003, coupled with the better TCO of
networked storage on EMC Symmetrix and CLARiioN platforms, can drastically reduce the
overall TCO of your Exchange infrastructure.

For even greater cost savings, EMC has developed disk backup solutions to address service
level limitations of tape and improve the overall protection of crtical Exchange data. EMC has
integrated inexpensive ATA disk technology into the CLARiiON product family to provide cost-
effective, disk-based backup.
Deploying Exchange Server 2003 more easily
Microsoft Migration Assessment Service delivers expert strategic analysis and
recommendations for migration and consolidation of Microsoft Exchange and
Windows environments. Deliverables include an inspection of the existing
infrastructure, review of business drivers to support the new infrastructure,
assessment of the network to support the new design, and a high-level final report
that includes designs, justifications, and a transition outline.

EMC also provides data mobility software:

Data Relocation Utilities (DRUs): Online, host-based migration software that allows you
to migrate data from direct-attached storage to the SAN without experiencing applica-
tion downtime or severely affecting host CPU cycles.

SAN Copy: Storage-based software that moves data directly from one storage system
to another, without server and LAN cycles.

EMCs Automated Networked Storage solutions provide information lifecycle

management for your Exchange 2003 infrastructure. They provide agility so you can
respond to increasing demands for e-mail data service levels and achieve your
broader business objectives. Since your e-mail information has different value
throughout its lifecycle and must be treated differently at different times, it is not
sufficient to just create and dispose of e-mail information. You need to protect it with
the right level of protection, and you need to provide access at the right speed and at
the right cost. You need to migrate and archive it as requirements change.

EMC helps businesses get the maximum value from their e-mail data at the lowest
cost, at every point in the e-mail information lifecycle.

Agri-Fab Automated Its Help Desk Operations and
Self-service Via the Web with FootPrints for Exchange
With FootPrints for Exchange, we can continue to enter users in one place our Exchange database and
extend that information to our support operations, said Kurtis Bunfil of Agri-Fab. At the same time, we can
deploy a complete help desk and online self-service system that leverages our inherent Microsoft technology
platform. This removes the possibility of any problems with the systems that we already use throughout our
organization.

For the volume of inquiries we get each day, its just too easy to lose track of things if you dont have a

Best play of 2003?

Migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange Server 2003 with ZeroIMPACT.

Here is how the Cleveland Browns used Exchange Migration Wizard to build a solid
defense for migrating without interference.

The things Aelita said the software would do were kind of hard to believe at first - but it
worked flawlessly. It was incredible. We experienced absolutely no loss of data. It was
truly transparent to the end users, and completely zero-impact. I can't think of anything
that didn't work. It was better than fine.

Exchange 5.5 is in its 4th quarter. It's time to pull your organizations together before the game is over. You may
have "collected" additional Exchange organizations through mergers or acquisitions this season. Or you may have
operational and political constraints that have forced you to use separate Exchange organizations. The end result is
that many of us are making major changes to our Exchange messaging environments. It's time to take the ball and
run with itmake the move to the latest version of Exchange and overhaul existingand often suboptimalExchange
organizational structures.

And migration often means consolidation. Consolidation has many faces; combinding multiple Exchange organizations into
fewer organizations; merging multiple Exchange sites into fewer sites; and consolidating many servers into fewer servers.
Reducing the number of Exchange servers can result in significant cost savings, whether from software licenses, hardware
leases, or administrative overhead.
