O ct. 21, 2003 is a day on which you probably focused on the

usual: making sure the network was up, keeping servers humming
along, putting somebody on the job of tracking down that
annoying event log warning that comes up every time the
CEOs desktop machine is rebooted, and sending out the 85th
reminder of the year to users not to download and open
unexpected e-mail attachments.

For Microsoft Corp., Oct. 21 was the
day it formally released the latest
version of its messaging and collabo-
ration system, Exchange Server 2003.
And its highly possible that this par-
ticular release could end up making
your workdays easier, more produc-
tive and more efficient.
Exchange Server 2003 updates
many of the technologies in earlier
versions of the product. While not a
paradigm shift, it definitely is more
than just a new coat of paint on top of
Exchange 2000 Server. It appears to be
built with two primary goals: use by a
mobile workforce and protection
against intruders, be they spammers or
hackers. There are a host of changes
that make sending and receiving infor-
mation through cell phones, PDAs,
pagers and so on much easier and
more intuitive. And the updates work
almost equally well for wireless, as
well as wired, networks. Exchange
Server 2003 also marks Microsofts
first serious effort at spam-blocking
not a moment too soon. Theres more
anti-virus coverage available as well,
better ways to retrieve information,
and more disaster recovery options.

to get a clean, consistent, point-in-time copy of a database, application, or object and
helps remedy online backup problems. EMC has replication technology that integrates with
VSS resulting in a backup and restore solution fully supported by Microsoft. Microsoft has
leveraged EMCs engineering experience by integrating replication technology with
Microsoft applications in the development of VSS. Also, Recovery Storage Group, a new
feature in Exchange Server 2003, simplifies the process of restoring a corrupted or deleted
database. Its key benefit is that it reduces the need for a separate recovery server and
makes it easier to restore lost individual mailboxes and e-mails. This feature, coupled with
EMC Automated Networked Storage and disk-based replicas (see below), will enable you
to recover a mailbox in minutes. Below is the value that EMC products provide to Exchange:

SnapView Integration Module for Exchange: Provides simplified, non-disruptive backup

and automated recovery for EMCs CLARiiON platform.

TimeFinder Exchange Integration Module (TEIM): Provides simplified, non-disruptive

backup and recovery for EMCs Symmetrix platform.

EMC Replication Manager (ERM): Automated management of disk-based replicas for

applications running on Windows Server 2003, including Exchange and SQL Server.

GeoSpan: GeoSpan for Microsoft Cluster Service provides a unique geographically

dispersed cluster solution. Clustering with GeoSpan helps avoid unplanned downtime
with integration between MSCS and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF).

VisualSRM: File-level monitoring, reporting, and browsing with drill-down, and folder-
walking for all Exchange applications. Have a PST problem? VisualSRM can be used to locate
them on your network, remind users of local PST policies, and even delete them if need be.

authenticity for e-mail archive data. The Centera product rounds out the full suite of products

gently managing all Exchange information from creation to archiving and disposal.
Infrastructure Cost Savings
Multiple database architecture in Exchange 2003 improves performance
and availability
Each Exchange 5.5 server was limited to one main mailbox database. If it grew too large, it
became too time consuming and unproductive to administer backup and restore
processes. As a consequence, many organizations limited the number of user mailboxes
and the size limits associated with each Exchange 5.5 server.

Database management is vastly improved with Exchange Server 2003 (and Exchange
2000): up to four storage groups and five stores per storage group combine to create the
availability of 20 separate databases per Exchange server. Multiple databases enable
greater flexibility in spreading out mailboxes for performance load balancing, higher
availability, and making backup and restore faster and easier. With Exchange 2003, only
one database and mailbox need to be recovered, making the process quick, easy, more
productive, and without downtime impact for the rest of the Exchange users.

Reduce hardware, software, and administration costs

Exchange 2003 can accommodate more users per server than Exchange 5.5. Exchange 5.5
customers typically have about 1,000 to 2,000 users per server, depending upon factors
such as user profiles, messages per day, and mailbox size limits. Enhanced performance and
the multiple database design in Exchange 2003 increases capacity to 3,500 to 5,000 or more
users per server. These advances in Exchange Server 2003, coupled with the better TCO of
networked storage on EMC Symmetrix and CLARiioN platforms, can drastically reduce the
overall TCO of your Exchange infrastructure.

For even greater cost savings, EMC has developed disk backup solutions to address service
level limitations of tape and improve the overall protection of crtical Exchange data. EMC has
integrated inexpensive ATA disk technology into the CLARiiON product family to provide cost-
effective, disk-based backup.
 Deploying Exchange Server 2003 more easily

noticeably faster under Exchange
2003.
5. Real-time Safe and Block List.
Exchange Server 2003 now supports
Real-time Safe and Block List, also
know as RBL. RBL allows organizations
to subscribe to a service that keeps lists
of IP addresses that allow spam and/or
SMTP relaying. Exchange Server 2003
can be configured to check the IP
address of every incoming SMTP
connection with the RBL provider and
block unapproved senders. You can also
configure Multiple Block List Services,
which can block specific areas like
spammers or open relays.
6. Outlook Mobile Access. No more
need for the late, lamented Mobile
Information Server. Outlook Mobile
Access allows any Web-enabled phone
or PDA to access a text-only version of
OWA, allowing users to view messages
and address book information. One
hidden advantage of this: Those on
molasses-like dial-up connections can
connect through their browsers and use
the faster, text-based system.
7. Recovery Storage Group.
Recovering messages is a serious hassle
in Exchange. Previously, a separate
recovery server had to be configured to
recover messages. No more. That hassle
has been mostly eliminated with
Recovery Storage Group, which allows
recovery of information stores on a live
production server with active users. It
eliminates the need for additional
hardware and a parallel environment.

How to Get an Evaluation Version of Exchange
So youre not in the banzai school of IT? You dont
regularly just buy major infrastructure software like
Exchange Server 2003 on faith and deploy it across
your organization right away? Hmm. Well, Microsoft
offers two evaluation options for timid souls like you.
If you want to kick around an evaluation edition of Exchange Server
2003, you can pull down 120 MB of code from the Web or order it via
CD. Microsoft will spot you the shipping and handling charges if
youre in the United States and you order by Dec. 15. You have a
choice between the Standard Edition and the Enterprise Edition. Both
versions are available in nine languages and are valid for 120 days.
Theres a direct URL for obtaining the evaluation editions

Sins of Omission
Most experts think that
Exchange Server 2003 is a
worthy product. That doesnt
mean its a perfect product,
however. Here are five things
Microsoft could have, should
have, put inbut didnt. Oh,
well. Maybe next time.
1. Lighter Outlook Web Access. The
new OWA is terrific-looking and has
functionality nearly on a par with
Outlook. But using it on a slow
connection, as some users in the real
world still do, can be torture. How
about a more text-based, lower-
bandwidth version of this product?
That would bring Nirvana closer to
hand.
Operations Guide was hailed, and
rightly so, as an essential document
to help admins protect their
networks. So why is there no similar
guide available for the newest rev of
Exchange? Furthermore, many of the
policies that come with the 2000
guide dont work with 2003. That
makes it much more difficult to
upgrade for shops on Exchange 2000,
not the situation Microsoft wants.
3. 4GB RAM Limit. Memory and
storage are cheap these days. Why
keep the Exchange 2000 restriction of
4GB RAM? Enterprise-class Exchange
environments are sure to clamor for
more. In really large organizations,
4GB may seriously hinder
performance. Youve said you want to
be in the data centers of the Fortune
100, Microsoft, right? Right?
files? Theyre like the NetBIOS of the
Exchange worldeverybody wants
them gone, but they keep hanging
around. As one Exchange guru said, If
this feature could be done within or
by Exchange, then life for both
administrators and end users would
be better. Amen.
5. Server-side Content Filtering. The
Real-time Safe and Block Lists (see
Anti-spam Features Built into

was a good start. In fact, one

Microsoft didnt go far enough. There
should have been a built-in

Exchange 5.5 is in its 4th quarter. It's time to pull your organizations together before the game is over. You may
